Try go check the capital website, search that particular bill. It will tell you its status and whatnot.  I haven't gotten any notices or seen any updates posted. I usually check every week.  What I'm worried about is they might wait till the last moment and do back door deals without public notice or hearings and pass it.  No committee, no hearing, just a midnight meeting no one knows about, and bam, Hawaii will be like new york

I asked my mom since she works there, and she said the bill is dead for this year. The crossover deadline was today and the bill didn't even make it out of committee. But she did say it can always be introduced again next session but we did win this battle at least for now. Good job guys! :shaka:

Be aware, its possible they can still back door it.  There's a term for it, I can't remember right now, but if the head of the house and head of senate can come to terms they can agree to pass a bill.

This was how Washington passed the veterans bill.  I have to look if its possible at the state level as well as the federal level.

Try ask your mom if their is any backdoor methods that no one talks about. No offense. Just don't want anyone to drop their guard.

I'm kinda new to this, but I'm hoping my "translation" of the process is close to accurate/correct.
SB 219 made it through one reading on 18th Jan 2013.  It was referred to committee 22 Jan, and subsequently re-referred to committee on 28 Jan.  Ways and Means committee was included in the second referral.
There is no hearing scheduled as of today at http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=SB&billnumber=219  and I don't think you can provide testimony through the state gov website interface via there "submit testimony" function w/o a scheduled hearing.  You can still write letters to the committee chairs, and I believe you can send in written testimony even if there isn't a meeting scheduled.  Maybe they keep it and place w/ other testimony if a meeting is scheduled later.
Buy like your original question, I don't know if this "bill" is effectively dead, or if it's likely to have a hearing scheduled and continue on the process.   Do we still have to "worry" about SB219?

Someone below supplied this PDF   http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2011/docs/citizensguide/HowaBillBecomesLaw.pdf  which is an easy graphic to follow.  Thanks

The only bill remaining is SB 69.

The other bills, including the AWB and concealed/open carry are essentially dead for the year. There is a remote possibility that some could be "resurrected" but that is unlikely. The session is two years so they can be readily reintroduced.

so, what, best case scenario would be, let everything die in committee, including CCW (so we dont have politically bargaining where "we'll let you have CCW for an AWB) if they get introduced next session, and then hope our CCW case breaks through in the courts?

hell, then we'd only have to challenge the pistol mag limit and NFA items!

Try ask your mom if their is any backdoor methods that no one talks about. No offense. Just don't want anyone to drop their guard.

Sometimes when it 's a real important issue, they add the contents to another bill that has a title broad enough to cover the issue. For example, the stuff from relating to firearms could be put into something like relating to public safety. They call it a Christmas tree bill because they're adding "ornaments" from other bills. They probably won't do that because the bill didn't even have one hearing and the issue never got discussed in a public hearing.  It's too controversial for them to backdoor it like that because they know that there's a lot of public interest.  Also the Hawaii constitution requires 3 readings in each house and the bill only had one reading in the senate and it never crossed over to the house in time.

Hope that helps! :shaka:
