Help!!!
« on: January 18, 2013, 06:23:11 PM »
So my immediate neighborhood has been invaded by a pack of feral roosters. We need to get rid of them so we can sleep past 5 or 6am. What is the best way to get rid of them?

Pellet gun.
Or. find where they roost and grab em when it's dark. Shove em in a box and give em to somebody.
Or. Jus conk em on the head and eat em.

I think grabbing em at night would be easiest unless they way up in a tree.

I'm thinking that hunting them with a pellet rifle would probably be the least efficient, but most fun, method of eradication.  That's got my vote!

I'd agree that a pellet gun would be the easiest (and fun, etc), but remember that peacock lady in Makaha? There have been some changes to animal cruelty laws because of that. So you might want to call and check with the Humane Society first. They might set live traps.

I seem to recall the Department of Land and Natural Resources Wildlife Division having some sort of pest eradication form. You could probably give them a call and they'll direct you to the correct info.

i believe the humane society will lend you traps and take the chickens away when you catch them.

i believe the humane society will lend you traps and take the chickens away when you catch them.

They will, they just require a refundable deposit.

Step 1: fully load 22 with any subsonic round available.

Step 2: feed the birds...anything.

Step 3: shoot the birds while they eat.

It really is that simple....

WAY better off with an air rifle.  Even using .22 Colibri could end up with an arrest for reckless endangerment, should a projectile leave your property line.

Yes u could get into some trouble with a .22 cal. depending on where u live and how well you know your neighbors. sub sonic ammo isn't that quiet if your going to use .22 I would use powder less. This ammo is quieter then my gamo 1000 fps brake barrel pellet gun. Happy hunting

Do not use a .22, not necessary and too many potential legal issues.

Air rifle works. One of my teachers told us in class about an irritating rooster always crowing right outside his window. One day he couldn't take it anymore so he grabbed his BB gun and shot it in the neck, mid crow. I think it was a science lesson because the point of the story was that the rooster's muscles were all tense and it was pretty much frozen stiff exactly how it died. So if you wanna have some fun with it, use an air rifle and remember to share the chicken hekka :shaka:

Traps from the humane society also work. My mom and my neighbors used cat traps from the humane society and pretty much got rid of all the strays in my neighborhood when I was in elementary school.

Seems like the issue worked itself out. Every day the rooster moved farther away. Last night / this morning I didn't hear him. I had to be careful because there are a lot of kids around here. I didn't want to knock it off in front of the kids. I was going to go the trap route but now I don't have to.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

A blowgun with office-type pushpins might be effective.  I've discouraged some pests around here with this arrangement.  The pushpins, surprisingly, fly point first.  Just don't inhale with the pushpin in your blowgun, and remember they will slide out if you are aiming downward.

Kind of a rainbow-ish trajectory, but they will usually penetrate the feathers to give a mild sting, and are non-lethal, cheap, and have a restricted range. And if somebody finds a "spent" pushpin on the ground or sidewalk, it's no big deal.  I use them for indoor practice --just to watch my groups.

When I lived in a single house, I got an 80lb pistol-type crossbow for this purpose but got a rush of brains to the head and realized those bolts would be pretty obvious if found.  Besides, the crossbow was surprisingly noisy. So was the bolt impact if it hit something solid, like my back fence.  I was thinking of getting a slightly longer string for it to reduce its power and noise, but never got around to it.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.
