September Rimfire Match
« on: September 01, 2010, 04:27:10 AM »
Aloha!

This month I think I will change up the 50yard target so that those with   lower power optics are better equipped to shoot. 2a found these NRA   small bore 50 yard, and I think they would be great for our purpose.  The 100 yard target is a little larger as well, so please keep scope power below 10X.  Even though the targets are a little larger I think this match will be very competitive.

Many folks do not have the time or opportunity to go to the range for   their monthly scheduled rimfire match. This match can be shot at any time you wish, any position, with open sights or scopes under 10X.

Here is the rules:
1.   This match will be run on the honor system. You will be responsible to   fire on your targets at the proper ranges and score your own targets   honestly.
2. At the beginning of the month you will be able to   download the targets from the match thread, and fire your targets at   your leisure, as many attempts you want.
3. When you feel you have shot your best target, scan/photo, and score your target, and post it up in the match thread.
4. Heavies will tally entries at the end of the month and post that month's winners.
5.   There will be no entry fees, use any type of rimfire rifle you wish,   scoped, open irons, supported, unsupported, sling, in any firing position you choose.

If your shot breaks any line on the score ring then the shot would count as the higher score.
I.E.   if your shot lands on the ring that separates the 9 and 10 rings, even   if the edge of the bullet breaks the line then that shot would be   counted as a ten.

X's are counted as ten and are used for tie breaking.

"A shot hole, the leading
edge of which comes in contact with the outside of the “X” ring or other scoring rings of a target, is given the higher
value (including keyhole or tipped shots even though the hole is elongated to the bullet’s length rather than being a
circle of the bullet’s diameter)" from NRA high powered scoring rule book.
http://www.nrahq.org/compete/nra-rule-books.asp

Use   all safe firearm handling skills, 2aHawaii nor I can take any   responsibility or liability for any injuries or deaths during the firing   of this match. Or any other time for that matter. :)
Use common sense and shoot safe!

There will be no prizes, (sorry, there is no entry fee) but you will have the bragging rights for that month. ;)

This   is just for fun, and this will be a good excuse to get out to the range   and shoot with purpose. As well as good practice for any other type of   shooting you may do.
Just remember to HAVE FUN!

September Match...

50 Yards, Ten shots, possible score of 100.  Shoot ten rounds at the   target and score according to hits, X's count as 10's and will be used   to break any ties.  Please limit yourself to 10 rounds on one  target.

50yrd target can be downloaded  Here

100   Yards, Ten shots, possible score of 100.  Shoot ten rounds at the   target and score according to hits, X's count as 10's and will be used   to break any ties.  Please limit yourself to 10 rounds on one  target.

100yrd target can be downloaded  Here
note: 100 yard target is slightly larger this month for open sight guys and guys with low power scopes.  Please keep scopes power below 10X

If there are any other ideas for this, or any other, fun match please let me know.

Please submit your results by Thursday,  September 30, 2010.
Thanks, B  :shaka:

Thanks Heavies, sounds like a great match. I hope more people can get out this month. Maybe if only a few people get out this month, we should extend it to two months like you said.

Hope some of you guy's can get out and shoot this weekend...  I went today be I didn't shoot .22.  My brother's lady friend came out with us so I let her use my Savage.  Oh well, I needed to sort out a load for my ought six anyway.  Next time. ;D

155 SMK Palma's Varget, Lake City 68 brass, PMC primers.  5 shots 100yards.

I'll mess with the seat depths and try to get em in closer.  Heard there is a F-Class coming up in October.
I had sweet load with the 155 Amax's, but, dangit, no one has them in stock!  I had 500 on order from Midway for about 3 months...

Sounds great, thanks for organizing Heavies!

I may be taking the .22 out next weekend and I think I happened to print up some of those targets the other day. :)

Looks like not much action so far this month.  I went out this last Sunday and shot the 100 yard prone with a sling and scope set at ten power.  Maybe well have to extend another month so every one can get a chance to shoot.

I got some range time with my .22 yesterday but forgot the 50yrd targets at home.  Ah well hopefully I'll go again either tomorrow or Sunday.

I shot this the first weekend in September.  Didn't do very good... my warmup groups were HALF the size of my target groups.  Half.  Not even exaggerating.

Anyway, I was delaying posting my targets on the off chance that I'd have time to try again.  But this weekend is a class weekend, so the odds are slim.  :(

I know what you mean!  The first round I shot was sweet but I only shot five shots.  :P
The record target. Dropped a few! Hehe. Didn't get to shoot 50yrds. Got to try this weekend if work allows. Other wise, it is what it is.  ;D

Woo hoo!  Made it to the rifle side today, I put the wrong date on there lol..   I shot four targets, the second of which I did best on.  I am not positive if I am scoring this correctly so let me know..

I think I got 98/100.   3, possibly 4 hitting the X, it is hard to tell with that tight group of 7. :)

Here is the specs:
CZ 452-2E .22LR
Federal Lightning, high velocity.
Leupold 4x scope

I'd say 98-3x. Good shooting+++. How do you like the Cz-452? I almost picked one up from Security.

Ok, shooters... here's what you can do with IRON SIGHTS!  Shooting an old Mossberg 144, CCI standard velocity.  I shot 2 targets at each range, with nearly identical scores each time.

I included 2 scores on the 100 yard target, depending on whether you count the outside ring as 5 or 0 points.

[EDIT]
Crap.  So NOW I get around to reading the rules... I only shot 5 shots, not 10.  So how about I post my alternate targets as well and we just add them together?

[EDIT EDIT]
Ok, so the combined scores (assuming that this is acceptable) are as follows:

50 yards - 92 with 1 X
100 yards - either 79 or 74, depending on whether that outside ring counts for 5 or 0 points.

Yes, I feel like an idiot!   >:(

Nice shooting guys!  Mishka, CZ's are the bomb, aren't they?  ;D Sweet.  Tom_g, your the iron sight master!   I don't have a problem with what you suggested.  Tom_g,  do you know of any irons (peeps and globe) that clamp to the weaver mount and to the barrel?  I was wanting to try irons, and still be able to switch to the scope.

Any other entries for this month?

Here is what I shot for 100Yrds. Scope set at 10 power, shot from the prone position with a sling support.  88/100

(I know... my math is somewhat faulty ::) )

I did not get a chance to shoot 50 because I've had too much work lately. :P Hopefully the extra overtime can get me get new and better toys..hehe ;D

If anyone wants a chance to shoot, I am not opposed to run the match an extra month.  Let me know what you guys think.

.  Tom_g,  do you know of any irons (peeps and globe) that clamp to the weaver mount and to the barrel?  I was wanting to try irons, and still be able to switch to the scope.

New England Custom Gun
makes rear apertures that clamp onto weaver rails.  Pricey.  I bought one for a .22 grooved receiver... it's still looking for a home!  And, of course, when you think aperture sights, you have to think Lyman and Williams.  Williams has the WGRS series designed to fit existing rear sights in many rifles.

Really, though, if you go with something like the NECG or the Williams WGRS, you are missing half the point.  What you really want for a proper experience is an aperture sight that has click-adjustable elevation and windage.  For that, you have to go either receiver-mounted or tang-mounted. However, Lyman makes many receiver-mounted aperture sights that are removeable.  There's a permanent base, but the sight pops off for storage and protection.  Something like that may make it fairly easy to transition between iron and glass.

Most globe sights I've seen just fit into standard dovetail cuts.  Lyman has one for about $35.  It pairs up nicely with their receiver sights!

You can see my Mossberg here.  It sports a removeable Lyman receiver sight and globe front sight.  The combination, as you can see, is pretty effective.

The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Well, while I don't mind giving others a chance to participate, I am looking forward to the next challenge!  So even if we extend the deadline on September, let's move forward with a new challenge for October.

And, just to express preference, I'd like to see future events include handgun, shooting from an unsupported standing position, and the inclusion of centerfire calibers.  Heck, maybe even shotgun slugs at 50 yards... that should be entertaining!  Y'know, give me an excuse to keeps all the toys in rotation!

Tom, you get the iron sight crown.  :worship:

With that crown, you are forgiven your lack of shots per target  ;D
