NRA/ILA alert for Abercrombie

Just got this from the NRA/ILA:

Quote
Use Your Vote to Defend Your Freedom!
Vote Against Neil Abercrombie on Saturday, September 18!The NRA needs your help -- on Saturday, September 18 -- to protect your gun rights and hunting heritage in the Democratic gubernatorial primary election.

During his two-decade long tenure in office, Neil Abercrombie has supported the assault on the Second Amendment in Congress, consistently earning him an “F” rating with the NRA Political Victory Fund due to his extreme anti-gun views.

Abercrombie voted against federal legislation that prohibits the confiscation of firearms during certain national emergencies.  As you know, during the 2010 legislative session, a similar measure protecting Hawaii's gun owners was overwhelmingly passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Linda Lingle.

Congressman Abercrombie also voted against legislation that would have prohibited city officials from imposing Second Amendment restrictions on law-abiding gun owners in our nation's capital.  What this means for Hawaii's gun owners is that Abercrombie would support your local politicians telling you what you can and can't do in reference to your gun rights - even if it means banning self-defense in your own home.

He is so radical that Abercrombie even voted against allowing commercial airline pilots to be armed in the cockpit to protect their passengers and crew from terrorism and against legislation that prevents attempts to bankrupt the American gun industry through bogus lawsuits.

Rest assured, as Governor, Neil Abercrombie will bring his anti-gun agenda to the State Capitol, signaling an open door policy to every piece of onerous legislation affecting your Second Amendment rights.  It is vital that we say “NO” to this kind of representation in Hawaii by voting against Neil Abercrombie.

On Saturday, September 18, vote AGAINST Neil Abercrombie in Hawaii’s Democratic gubernatorial primary election!

Wow, I can't believe I missed that. Good catch HiCarry.

Do we have open primaries here in Hawaii?

Yes. From the State Office of Elections:

Quote
PRIMARY ELECTION
The Primary Election is a nomination process to choose candidates who will represent the
political parties at the General Election. You, the voter, select the candidates of the
political party of your choice. Your choice of party and candidates remains secret.
When voting in the primary, you are presented with a set of color-coded party ballots on
a Ballot Card, but must vote on only one party or nonpartisan ballot. Selecting
candidates from more than one party ballot or nonpartisan ballot will invalidate your
vote.

Because anyone with views similar to her's would be virtually unelectable here...we can of course change that, to some degree.....

Is that because no one with similar views has enough political connections? I think it's just hard to find someone like that here. We are almost the Chicago of the West.

I think that's part of it...look a Panos. He's definitely more like Arizona's Gov in terms of political positions, but he just cannnot seem to garner enough support to be a viable threat. On the other hand, Aiona, the leading Republican candidate is a local boy who despite his right leaning doesn't seem to be as supportive of gun rights as most of "us" would like.

I think the local attitude (and I mean that without disrespect or judgement) is based on the circumstances of our history. We had the overthrow of the monarchy by the US (or, to avoid any possible debate over historical accuracy, US backed individuals...) who needed to keep the "locals" from rising up to retake their land; cultural influences from abroad that generally were unaccostomed to being afforded the right to bear arms; cultural attitudes against making waves; and for the most part a pretty peaceful society.

So, even now you run into "locals" who cannot understand, or are against guns in general, because that was the way they were brought up. Of course that is a very broad brush to paint all "locals" with, and there are obvious examples to the contrary, but it is a predominant perspective here and we need more grassroots efforts to overcome it. Of course this all my own personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect those of any organization I may be associated with.

The HRA web site has a good write up on the people up for election.

The HRA website mentions voting for Hanabusa instead of Djou just to get her out of Hawaii.

Hanabusa is definitely anti-gun...and has proven that time and time again here in Hawaii....Djou seems to have been supportive of the "police package" in the past, which included the .50 cal ban, but doesn't now seem to be actively "anti" and we have some second hand info that he's become more "gun friendly" recently.....

What are folks thoughts on that strategy?

I cannot, in good conscience, vote for Hanabusa. That would be like dumping our garbage on the mainland. The country, as a whole is in tough shape as it is, and another radical in congress is the last thing the US needs now. Also, Djou sends a message to the nation, that liberals should not shove radical legislation down peoples throat. I just hope that the people in this state can see the light and change our state legislation to a more conservative level. With the situation that this state is in right now, I feel it is possible. I know of many people that have never voted or haven't voted in a long while, who will get to the polls this time and try to fight off the strangle hold the Dems have had on this state and country.
I hope things can be turned around, and if not, at the very least, we put up a good fight.

I, too, don't like the idea of voting for Hanabusa just to get her out of here. Can't we just buy her a one way plane ticket? :P

But seriously, what would the point of getting Hanabusa in. Does she do any anti-gun stuff while she isn't running for office?

The HRA website was very helpful to know the position of all the candidates. +1 HRA.

I'll still be voting for Djou even though he "may" be anti-gun.  His viewpoints on many other issues are more closely aligned to my own than most politicians, let alone any politicians in Hawaii especially Hanabusa who I view to be politically and fundamentally toxic.  Besides how anti-gun can an army reservist officer be?

Edit:
Lets not forget, Hanabusa wanted to ban pitbulls because in her mind they were a "dangerous breed".  Dogs are cute and cuddly and generally accepted by the public-- our guns are not.  Just think what could happen...

+1 on that. Just like guns, dogs are a direct reflection of their owners responsibility. If the owner is a responsible person, willing to put in the time and effort for responsible training and handling, a dog, or a gun, is a useful tool, a good friend, and a joy to have around.
The closed mindedness and messed up logic of people like Hanabusa make them the "dangerous breed".

^ Very well said Heavies.  Hanabusa was on the news tonight casting her vote.  Ironically she was unable to vote for herself because she does not live in the district she is running to represent.  :D
