one more HUGE thing to watch out for in the legislative process
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:32:17 AM »
i noticed something yesterday while reading the committee report
someone mentioned that the chair at the last minute tried to gut the bill to get it to pass
this is a legislative tactic that is entirely within the rules
make changes to a bill to get it through committee so that it makes it to the floor
then amend it back to the original wording

but it gets even worse that happens after a bill passes the house or senate
there is something called "crossover", where the senate and house have to confer to make sure the house and senate bills are the same
"conference committees" are held, with representation from both the house and the senate
at this point, public testimony IS NOT allowed
in conference committee, anything goes
you could conceivably change an innocuous bill to one that makes o'bama the lifetime supreme leader of HI
this is the place where the real politicing takes place

it sucks, but we have to be aware and continue to make our voice known
the only thing that the legislators fear is losing their power
so if they are in fear of being held accountable, they may not pull any stunts
but i doubt they fear much, so that's why i am pointing this out

Good points, bruddah macsak!!

Might also be helpful to:

1.  Find out when the legislators' terms expire;

2.  Send follow-up thank you letters/emails to those legislators who support 2nd Amendment rights in committee an/or on the floor;

3.  Remind those legislators who do NOT support 2nd Amendment rights, that it is their duty is to represent the PEOPLE, and that we are aware of their votes; and

4.  Continue to submit testimony and show up to the hearings, when can.

Last time I checked, we live in a democratic republic in which individuals are elected by the people to represent them.

If those elected individuals are no longer upholding their responsibility to listen to, and represent the wishes of the people, then those elected individuals are failing the system and should not be re-elected... but I'm preaching to the choir.  :(
