How accurate is the 1903?
Well, today, I was keeping pretty consistently around 3 MOA at 100 yards. Only shot 4 groups, though, what with the time crunch and the 1917 to play with also. Not bad for a first date. In my experience, any 1903 variant in good condition is capable of approaching MOA. And the one I built for Chuck's sniper class held better-than MOA out to our maximum distance, which I think was 450 yards, using milsup M2 ball ammo.
I generally don't "count" group sizes until I've had a gun out 5 times, though. I don't know about the rest of you, but I find it takes me some time to make my peace with a given gun. Find the proper fit against my shoulder and cheek (or on the grip for handguns), really get familiar with the trigger, learn where not to put my fingers...
Speaking of which, I nearly took a bite out of my left thumb. The 1903 has a rear locking lug on the bolt that is exposed when the bolt lifts to open. There's maybe a 1/2" gap between the rear of the lug and the receiver where the rear sight is mounted. When I shoot targets, I'm accustomed to putting my hand over the bolt as I open it so I don't have to chase the ejected cartridge. I unknowingly put my thumb into that gap before I drew the bolt handle back.... OW!!! At least I wasn't in a hurry and was pulling the handle in a leisurely fashion. Otherwise, I'd have lost a big enough chunk of Tom to require a few stitches!
