If it did fire a cartridge, would it need to be purchased through an FFL or do you only need to register it once received?  Only reason I ask is I know in a lot of states firearms designated as antiques don't need to be registered so there's a lot of private sales.

Uberti and Pietta guns are alright, they do need some work, and I highly recommend most of what ive had done to all of my guns, at the minimum, action job by a competent cowboy gunsmith, forcing cone cut and polished to 11 degrees and replace all the soft uberti screws. In the case of these open tops replace the sharp soft uberti firing pins as well.
All cartridge guns would have to go through an FFL and be registered, as well as the 2 week permit process. If its cap and ball it can go right to you, if you get a conversion cylinder you just made it a cartridge gun and technically are supposed to register it, Id ask what happens if you put the cap and ball cylinder back on, would they un register it.
