Both excellent guns.

Unless you plan to conceal carry it, get the 17.

The 17 does everything the 19 does, just better.

+1 for the glock 17. Even if you did get a ccw permit, you would probably carry at least a glock 26 and that's on the chuncky side especially considering our t-shirt and shorts weather.

Not sure if you considered this but I was making the same decision as you a couple of years ago and I said screw it and went with a 26!  I'm 6'3" and 330 with real big hands and I love the feel. I've always had unorthodox thoughts about the hand size vs pistol size issue. Everyone seems to tow the conventional thought line about big/small hands only matching big/small pistols, but I've always felt - from actual personal experience - that as far as comfort and accuracy, big hands can handle big AND small pistols where as small hands should stick to small pistols. Yeah I've had my 110lb girlfriend shoot my AMT automag .50 and .454 casull but I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about for SD, HD, target, etc.

I have a 17, 21, and a 26 with that ergo mag floor plate pinky rest extension and they're all cozy to shoot - different, but I love the tiny 26. I also have a chiappa 200ds 2" snub which is about identical to the 26 if not a bit smaller and it fits my hand perfectly.

If you live in HI and you're not worried about serious target or match quality, only about SD/HD/CC and basic range fun, why not go subcompact?

@hucklebuck:

I like the ergo's and feel of the 26/27 as well but a 17/22 is just a much better gun.

Without the little pinky extension, the 26/27 is a different feeling gun than its larger brethren.

I have very large hands as well and the 17/22 feel perfect for me.

To each their own though.

@OldFaithful: definitely try them all out to see which one fits you best.

I use a G22 for HD and a G23 for CCW. As I said before, both excellent guns.

I've recently seen gen 4 17's for $600ish. Can't find many 19's though. You might want to reconsider your CCW options though which pretty much is a moot point at the moment. Assuming CCW was attainable tomorrow, how do you plan on carrying that g17? That's gonna be a challenge regardless of how tall you are.

17, imo.  i dont see the point about even worrying about the slight possibility of CCW.

iʻd rather have the fullsize.  its not really about capacity, iʻd just rather have a heavier pistol, since CCW doesnt matter.

I believe the $350 Glock 17 at sec is a gen3. It looks to be well used.

+1, i saw it and though it should be worth about 200 bucks but I guess someone loves expensive worn out 3rd gen glocks with a single mag and actually bought it (i believe it is already sold).  One thing I don't understand is why not clean the gun before trying to sell it (it was dirty as hell!), espeically for that much money?  Meh, with suckers willing to spend the money, the who cares attitude can fly I guess...

If you decide on the 17, why not go with the 34 for the longer sight radius and the lighter stock connector?  The 34 is the same size as a 1911 and a lot of people ccw 1911's (which is a moot point seeing as we live in Hawaii)!  As far as the 19 is concerned; if you want small, go with the 26 (its not like you can get standard cap mags in Hawaii so who cares at that point?).  no more half measures!

Either way, glocks are great guns.  20-25 bucks and you can have a gun with a 2-2.5lb trigger pull with no overtravel, or pretravel and a reset of 0.06 inchs.  Spend about 10 bucks more to modify the trigger pin and you'll have a sub 2lb trigger pull on stock internals.  Easy and cheap to mod and fairly reliable.  Sure it won't be as crisp as a $3-$5k 1911 but you can get one pretty darn close.  Just don't shoot lead through the stock barrel for very long without cleaning your barrel very well and you'll be fine!

Oh and remember that when your polishing up your internals, use a motorized tool (aka dremel).  when you use qtips to polish, you end up with nice and shiney rough edges on all your mating surfaces which doesn't smooth anything out.  have fun!

I'm a huge fan of the 19, its pretty much a near ideal firearm imo. Price, size and capalities are all on point.  But if you aren't planning on concealing it, a 17 would do just as fine.  Nothing wrong with either platform.

I have a G22.  Sometimes I wish I had the G23 midsize.  I don't have big hands so don't need a long grip and the 15 round capacity is a waste here.  midsize is better for concealed carry.
