howzit new to the forum. Had a question about selling/transferring a firearm. My friend who lives in CA is coming here next month and interested in buying my pistol from me. What would be the procedure for this? Would he need to obtain a permit to acquire a handgun and wait 14 days and then I can transfer it to him like any other resident purchasing a handgun for the 1 st time hawaii? He used to live here but a CA resident now and never owned a firearm. and hes only here for a week so that probably wouldnt work. Or can we just go to an FFL or the police department and transfer it to him? Assuming he will need to get a permit but anyone in the know please inform me. thanks!

Is the friend MOVING to Hawaii and taking up residency?  If so, then you can do a private party sale.

If not, then you have to ship the gun to an FFL in CA, and the friend goes through his state's requirements to pick it up.  You need to notify HPD of the sale so the gun is no longer registered to you.

You won't be able to transfer it to him here.

He's only visiting for a week so the two week waiting period rules that out.

What you need to consider is whether the pistol is on the California approved list of pistols to own.

If its not, you'll ship it to a FFL in California for nothing. They won't release it to him.

If it is on the list, you'd need to send it to a FFL in California and your friend would need to go through the process to acquire the handgun in Californa.

its been on consignment at a local ffl. can I promote it through the classifieds is that allowed?

Can't answer that.  You need to abide by the consignment agreement.  If you sell it here, I imagine you still owe the store their commission. 

They can't stop you from selling it for them.  In fact, you'll be doing their job of selling it, and they get paid! 

yea i was just going to post what it is for sale and which FFL to purchase at if interested. thats cool ya? basically just advertising my consignment gun for sale

ya im not gonna bother. i just posted in classifieds. another one of my friends in california told me that all the gun stores/FFLs have collectively have agreed on 100$plus transfer fees to discourage purchasing out state and transfers. its crazy over there

Did you PM KingKeoni first?  Failure to PM KK for first dibs on any classified ad is a major breach of the 2aHawaii terms of service and grounds for summary banishment, or at least that's what I've heard...   

Your friend needs to comply with the rules & regs of California which are similar/different to Hawaii.  I don't know what those would be in this instance.

A second way to do it is have a FFL in California handle the transfer (provided they are OK with you as the Owner sending the fiream to them, some get touchy and might require that it be FFL to FFL).
