According to the old time shooters on gunboards.com the mosin area mosins rarely have head space issues.  Their bolt face is heavy and creates a very positive lockup.  But with that being said its always better be safe than sorry.

Just make sure you set the firing pin postion using the tear drop tool guages.

Was that from firing or in the ammo can.  Ive seen other posts where they show ammo with split cases from the spam cans not being seal. And air and moister leak in and ruin ammo

Split cases when using surplus ammo is not unusual.  Visually check the rounds before using them.  They should not have creases or dings. 

Thanks for the clip moosed. Looks like a chance occurrence, all the ammo looked just fine on the outside. I guess I was lucky it didn't fully split.

Moosed is right its fairly common the metal supposedly gets softer over the years and the pressure from the firing may cause a cartridge to warp, split or expand.   If it keeps happening try another batch of ammo.  I don't think it could be the headspace...but I could be excess old comso that might be caked in.  When the cosmo heats up and melts it can leak into the breach

You should verify with the seller the condition and finish of the specific hand guard you need.  Most have a variety of shades and colors, so the more info you give (photo?), the closer they can match it.

That assumes you care about the appearance.  If you plan on refinishing it anyway, or don't mind the "roof" being a different color than the "body", then just order one.

If you can find one locally (or online) cheaper than those, let me know.  I may need one,too, eventually!

I bought a accurizing kit off one of the guys on gunboards.com its supposed to be a modern version of how the russian snipers "bedded" thier rifles and also includes the trigger shims for getting rid of that awful creep and spongy feeling.   I'll post pics of the install when I get it.
