reloading in my bedroom
« on: May 01, 2013, 03:13:16 PM »
The only place I can create a reloading setup is in my bedroom. Any thoughts or opinions on this? I've searched online and most have said as long as I clean up after I should be ok. I have tile so I don't have to worry about powder or anything getting stuck in carpet. . Some have said I may be affected from the fumes given off by the materials used. My room is totally enclosed with no windows. I just run a/c. Some guys say they reload in their basement with no ventilation and they're ok.

My buddy reloads in his living room in his one bedroom apartment in town. Another friend lives in Utah and has one bedroom dedicated to his reloading room. During the winter (snow) he reloads with no air conditioner just a centralized heater. There are no fumes that I am aware of that can harm you unless you melt lead in your house to cast your own bullets.

Carpet + A/C = static electricity.  Static electricity + metal press = spark.  Spark + loose gunpowder = FOOSH.

That's about the worst case scenario I can come up with!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I think the bad things to deal with is the amonia on the cleaning media and whatever you use for case lube.  This is the respiratory part.

The other bad stuff is potential cross contamination from the lead and the chemicals in the primers.

Ideally you don't want this stuff where you sleep or eat.

If the most fun you are having in your bedroom is reloading ammo, then you probably will benefit from the arm muscles you'll develop operating the press!!

+1 on not reloading in your bedroom.  Garage is ideal if possible.

as long as you are not casting bullets, Ventilation shouldn't be a problem. I reload in my second bedroom with no issues.
Modern smokeless powder is not explosive and easily ignited like black powder. I believe primers are the most dangerous materials we deal with as handloaders.

My Square Deal was set up in my boy's bedroom for while.
When he grew to be a teenager, he became stupid and did all kinds of crazy stuff.
It must have been all the contamination.
 ::)

But seriously, there is a surprising amount of dust and loose crud associated with reloading ammo.
If you tumble clean your shells, you will get dust and media grit floating around. It is mildly toxic due to the primer residue.
I suggest the kitchen for the tumbler if you do not have an outdoor area for it. Someone suggested a used dryer sheet in the tumbler to reduce dust.
I tried it and it seems to work...somewhat.
When you deprime, some of that toxic sooty stuff falls out. Not much, but after a while it adds up.
Spent or live primers fall into the carpet and get lost.
Obviously, you want to keep noxious chemical solvents out of the bedroom area as much as possible.

I suggest a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to vac the room every once in while.
If you don't have a vac with HEPA filter, then at least get a vac that uses a disposable bag.
The HEPA filter should keep the txoic dust from blowing out the vacuum exhaust port. That would be a bad thing.

What, Me Worry?

You might also invest in a good quality, strong current HEPA air filter to clean the airborne particles (and dust) before you breath them in or they land on the floor or furniture.

thanks for the input guys. I will be doing anything that doesn't require the press, outside of the bedroom.

I have the square deal too but haven t set it up yet. Doesn't the spent primer catch bin catch all the spent primer crude in the square deal B? or does the loose crude fly around in the air?
