Altoids Tin Survival...
« on: May 04, 2013, 12:50:06 AM »
Guys and gals... Was tooling around the web last Sunday and looking at survival kits etc....Found this and thought it was way cool... a fun little project....

http://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/?sort=none&q=altoids+tin+survival

Mini "Survival Kits" you make on your own with an altoids tin, household items, maybe some bought cheap items, and the good old fashion human brain...

*** Note,  we're part time preppers, have full on bob's (bug out bags) for everyone in the family, store, prep foods, goods, etc. etc. but though this would be a fun thing.... Your not gonna live off the little altoids tin for a month, but it may save your ass for a day or two and again is a fun little project...****

You basically keep it in a pocket, purse, hand bag, or whatever in case of an emergency....

Again, it's just a mini survival kit and exercise for us "survivalists"....

Here is what I fit in my standard altoids tin....

Mini Multi-tool knife... cheap hand out from a tool vendor, has a blade, mini screwdrivers, mini cork screw and file.
Mini bic lighter
Two Q-tips
Two paper clips
Five strike anywhere matches
Couple fish hooks
12lb. test fishing line, maybe 10' or so tightly wound
Two small ball leads and "baits"
One alcohol swab
Two band-aids
One asprin packet
One mini sewing kit I got from a hotel
Pair of foam ear plugs
Two suture strips
One anit-bacterial wipe
Folded up Tin Foil
One new razor blade

Got creative and made it fit in the tin. One piece of duct tape to keep it sealed and closed... (a very tight fit)

Again just a small little project for survival... adjust and create your own kit. :shaka:

Extra weight for guys on Oahu. Dump that tin for an extra MRE and a good compass.

Might be useful for outer island, but doubtful. Your fooling yourself if you think mainland style prepping works here. If I'm going in the bushes, I'm bringing snares, rope, and a shit ton of fire starters.

I prefer to have Altoids in my Altoids tin.  :geekdanc:

What you going to snare?  I don't think pig population on Oahu can sustain 1  million plus people and I don't think you are the only one with the snare idea.  Might be handy to have some fishing gear for when the pigs run dry.
It is what it is.

I haven't thought of Altoid Tin survival kits for a while.

Great exercise to do with kids, actually. Small, simple, cheap... and gets the point across of thinking about what you'll need before you need it.

Love the little knife idea.

Easy Killah, not dissing just discussing.

If you an BUD think you going do bettah with 10 feet fishing line on the already crowded shores, going.

No doubt the pigs isn't going sustain 1 million, but they don't need too, if you really surviving you'd be blue mountains teaching keiki like every weekend.

These are fun projects.  Mine are filled mostly with first aid items.  One reason why I love ESEE blades is the sheaths come with tins.  Very survival oriented company and their stuff shows it.

As far as pigs and fish if TSHTF, those proteins are going to be few and far between.  If it really happened survivors are going to have to switch to more grain, fruit and vegetable diet.  All depends on the situation.   Buy more rice, beans and spam now. LOL

Mmm....

Don't know whats up with all the a-hole attitudes these days, but we're talking about survival right? It really doesn't matter if you fish the deep blue, snare pigs (and maybe tourists), grow a garden or raid the Costco.  Bottom line is: what you're willing to do and how far you're able to go will determine whether you're a survivor or victim.

What you snaring? One tourist? LMAO!!!  get real brah,,,, you dissing one project I did with my kids...
It's a good project to teach kids about being prepared...something/anything is better than nothing.

A bit of a dark turn and not something I really think about, but if I were hungry enough and snared a tourist? I would consider long pig stew.
What you going to snare?  I don't think pig population on Oahu can sustain 1  million plus people and I don't think you are the only one with the snare idea.  Might be handy to have some fishing gear for when the pigs run dry.
BOTH hunting and fishing would never sustain the 1 million+, but then it really doesn't have to. Most people are urbanized/citified and unable to live off the land. They lack the skills and knowledge. Many wouldn't be able to stomach what it takes to hunt or fish and process their own "food". It's a cold hard fact, that those people (along with MANY others) are going to die.

All I was saying is just don't put all your eggs in one basket.  There is no such thing as overprepared. Especially when you don't know what the circumstances might be.
It is what it is.

within 2-3 months of SHTF in hawaii, people are going to be hunting people for food
or killing people to get their food stores within weeks

not enough coconuts, livestock, fruits/vegetable, wild pigs nor fish, nor pets to feed everyone for very long
nor enough people with knowledge and willingness to share
