.........and make sure your friend stands by the RSO.  I've been there when the range has nearly gone hot when someone is still out there.

Make them wear blaze orange jacket when they go up there!

I know rimfire rifles(.22lr) are allowed, but...

What are the rules for SMG type rifles? I.e. MP5's,USC's, Kriss...etc?
Are they allowed and up to what caliber?

nope unless they are 22lr, i am assuming you have a legal SMG type rifle with a 16" barrel.  no pistol caliber rifles allowed

Pistol caliber rifles are not allowed.
Rifle caliber pistols are allowed.
Eye protection must be worn by everyone. If you get a chance to look on the roof, you will know why.

Easiest thing to do is pay your $5.00.  Shoot down all the little targets, and then during the break go to the bathroom or sit back and relax while all the other people setup the targets!

I have to giggle at the various folks who didn't realize you could load 10 rounds.  The rules are posted on a giant green plastic sign right next to the range office.  Maybe it's just me, but I always look for the posted rules at a range, and I look to see if they've changed since the last time I was there.

For saftey reasons because its a free public range. Just like the rule where u can't have any targets that resemble a human silhouette figure because its a public range, that's what I was told by the range officer.

The five-round deal also ensures you haven't just racked a 30-round magazine as a cease fire is called.  Nobody likes to hear "cease fire" just as they clicked off the safety!  You KNOW everybody else is watching you!!

Sorry, but I dont understand how loading only 5 rounds does anything for safety. And if you just loaded a full mag, just take it out and put it down. You could also just keep one in the chamber and then load a mag so youll have 6 lol

I feel strange reposting my reposts to questions that were posted by others repeatedly.

Safety is a major concern in most activities. The reductions of negligent and possibly fatal discharges can be mitigated by limiting the magazine capacity. Bumpfire/slamfire does happen. Not everyone keeps the finger off the trigger till ready to fire. People do not always know that the firearm is unloaded.

Take some time to study the roof, benches and baffles at Koko Head. You may notice a bunch of holes that were not made by large caliber termites. Some were actually weapons malfunctions. Some were people trying to shoot as fast as they could and fell backward. Some were just plain bad gun handling skills.

5 rounds per mag for the public side of Kokohead as a general range rule is OK by me. Higher round count at the silhouette and action bays are acceptable if they shoot safely.

My repost.....

"Per NRA and CMP rules, rapidfire is 5 rounds in 10 seconds at the 25 yardline shooting one-handed for Bullseye Pistol.

For High Power Rifle, it is 10 rounds (2 magazines loaded with 2/8 or 5/5), sitting position, iron sights, 200yards, 60 seconds. At 300yards you get 70 seconds in the prone position.

Much of Koko Head rules were modeled from NRA and CMP style shooting"

The range commands at cease fire are to complete your firing, not to eject your magazine and your chambered round.  I understand it's 6 in one, half dozen in another, but the range sets the rules, and the RO's give the commands.

I've done a ton of research on why certain ranges set their rules the way they do.

(1)  The consensus of most  sources I found as to setting an arbitrary maximum number of rounds loaded in the gun is .... it's the range's rule!  It is what it is, and that's the game you have to play.

(2)  As for emptying the magazine & chamber by firing the ammo vice removing a loaded magazine and manually clearing the last round in the chamber, the consensus is: at some point, there was an ND (negligent discharge) by some untrained or careless shooter.  So, the range came up with a lowest-common-denominator rule:  it's safer to clear a gun with no live rounds remaining in it.

I'm not arguing for the rules in either case.  That just happens to be what I've been able to dig up on the question "WHY?"
When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state".

How the rule came about, I don't know.

For safety, I can tell you I've personally seen rifles down here with trigger/sear issues.  Double, triple fires.......essentially burst fire.  Intermittent too, so completely unpredictable.  Can you imagine what would happen if you weren't expecting it?

I have to look for that sign, the RO told me only 5 rounds max for rifle and handgun, rim fire 10 rounds.
