Marlin .22LR Rifles
« on: May 13, 2013, 09:57:19 PM »
Aloha,

I'm ready to purchase a .22LR rifle and want a Marlin due to budget & leaving it stock. I've narrowed it to models 60 & 795.

I would like some personal counsel/feedback from those that own or have owned either model. I know their similar designs just
different ways of ammo feeding. But I'm torn between deciding either tube or mag feed. Please give me some feed back. Mahalo.

I got a 795. It's a nice gun. Light. Easy to shoot.  Has the auto bolt open feature. Haven't looked in a while, but mags were hard to find locally.  The stock trigger is very rough. You can try and shoot it if you want.

Model 60s rock.

Somewhere on this forum, I posted a detailed account of using my model 60 at a Boy Scout shoot, while all of my friends were using 10/22s.  I bought a Spee-D-Loader for my Marlin (best $20 I EVER spent!).  It takes a few minutes to load the loader, which has 8 tubes.  You just drop in the ammo.  Then, with the loader, it takes just a few seconds to reload the Marlin's tube.

At the end of the day, we had each run thousands of rounds through our respective rifles.  Well, the scouts had.  But we had reloaded our rifles for the scouts.  I walked away from the firing line tired, but uninjured.  Everyone of them had torn and bleeding thumbs from reloading those silly little interchangeable magazines they were so proud of.

Moral of the story: tube loaders rule!

I wanna thank everyone for sharing websites and info on these models.
And your willingness to let me shoot what you have. Right now I'm 80% sure I want
a model 60.

If anyone has fired both rifles was there any differance in accuracy out of box conditions?

Marlin Model 60's are more accurate out of the box than a out of the box 10/22. But, after seeing how accurate my friend's 10/22 take down is out of the box I would say the take down is close to the Marlin Model 60. If you are willing to add a SpeeDee Loader to your Tube fed Marlin 60 you will be able to reload much faster than the 10/22.

that might have been true about the speedee loader but now ruger has the new hc3r mags which stores for reloading faster using a stripper clip style system. No more bleeding thumbs.

I thought about that while I wrote this. Only downside is the price of the mag. Otherwise it is a well thought out and laid out mag. We'll have to do some comparison testing, won't we?  :D

To me, the sights on a 10/22 are better then the sights on my 795. The sights for the 10/22 are "higher" so its easier for me to shoot.

If I could do it over, i would have gotten a 10/22 instead.  Easier to consolidate now since everyone in my house has one.
