Holy Mackerel! It's bad enough shooting a 45-70 Govt round in a rifle!

https://www.ruger.com/products/gp100/specSheets/1765.html

I heard its a "polished" blued finish in 44special, 5 inch barrel
unfluted cylinder, brass bead front sight
I think the internals are the same as a regular GP100
in the picture the finish looks very nice.  I wonder what it looks like in person

The finish looks really nice. Too bad I am still fighting with the ambulance billing and the lab billing as I think that is the end of my wife's doctor bills for right now. Once I get those straightened out and paid I can start saving again for my next purchase.....

I like the unfluted cylinders, think they look badass. lol

but why 44sp and not 44mag?  44mag shoots both.

I think bc of the GP100 frame, that's all it can handle safely.

Oh, that makes sense....  otherwise they'd use the super redhawk or Blackhawk frames.

also, the GP100 frame being a little smaller than the Redhawk, is a little easier for me to shoot in DA.  I have medium size hands so the large frame Redhawk is a little large for me to shoot in DA with the Hogue grips
maybe with the wood grips on the Redhawk it would be easier for me to shoot in DA.  the wood looks smaller than the Hogue Bantam grips that I have which are fat grips
if you have larger hands, maybe the Redhawk is easier to shoot in DA

this isn't the Lipseys version GP100, its the regular Ruger GP100 in 44 special

I'm not an engineer. And I agree completely with your assessment. There could be another reason that I see that is less likely. It could be the size of the GP100 frame only allows a cylinder size that can hold 5 rounds of 44 SPL or perhaps 4 rounds of 44 MAG. I doubt a 4 round revolver would sell. And your assessment is more plausible. The thing I like about this revolver in 44 SPL is the size, and the 44 SPL is an excellent SD round when loaded with some of the newer high tech SD ammo, and Ruger's reputation for making very strong, reliable and accurate revolvers. It also doesn't hurt that you can practice with less hot 44 SPL ammo which is quite pleasant to shoot. I would rather have 5 rounds of 44 SPL SD ammo than the 6 rounds of 9mm that I currently have. Even a hardcast 44 SPL would be much more preferred by me.

Anyway, thanks for making me drool even more....  :shaka: :shaka: :shaka:

I have the Super Redhawk with the Hogue Recoil Tamer grips and larger hands. It is still harder to shoot double action. I only have the Super Redhawk for fun and nothing serious like hunting or SD. So single action is good enough. But you are right, it takes a lot of practice to shoot DA well.

honestly if i were to guess, and knowing ruger overengineers their guns, you could probalby load the 44sp as close you can to magnum spec and it'll be ok.

if you're comparing 44sp to other revolvers for self defense, I'd prefer 38/357 magnum.  I believe they started making ones with 7 round cylinders.

DA is hard for longer ranges because of the heavy trigger pull.  Super redhawk is also harder because the revolver is heavier as well.  If you know approximately when the trigger will break, that helps too, since you can pull the trigger part way, then complete the trigger pull when you're ready to shoot.

While I love Ruger revolvers, and I own a few, I still prefer S&W revolvers as a personal choice. My S&W Model 627 Performance Center holds 8 rounds of .357 Magnum. The Ruger Redhawk, which is a larger frame than the GP100 also holds 8 rounds of .357. I think the 357 Magnum is also an awesome SD round. I am still a little old school and still prefer a bigger, heavier slug for SD.

yes, I totally agree. a 4 round revolver would not sell well.   :shaka:

I also enjoy the 357magnum / 38sp revolvers very much.

S&W make very fine revolvers.  I love their triggers.  I have to admit, smoother than Ruger triggers.
I won't make an opinion whether 44 is better than 357.  I love them both.   :shaka:

got the Colt Cobra home
found that one of my speedloaders for my Security Six works with the Cobra.
so I had to compare it to my LCR since they're both compact 38sp revolvers
the Cobra is a little larger and heavier.  DA trigger pull is very similar, maybe slightly better on the Cobra.  but the SA trigger pull is really nice on the Cobra, light and short
the longer grip on the Cobra makes it a little harder to carry in the pocket, but I'm not going to do that anyway so no big deal.  and there are hardwood grips that I think Hogue makes if pocket carry is what is needed, not sure if they'd be any better
we'll see how it shoots maybe this weekend

Shot the Cobra today at the silhouette range
Overall I'm impressed.
I like the trigger, the grip, and sights
The trigger is very good, smooth. DA is easy to get used to, very nice. SA is light
The grip is big enough to get my pinky on it, pretty good for a small revolver
Front sight is red fiber optic, works well
Shot 150 rounds of 158 grain magtech and 130 grain federal. POI was better with the 158 grain
I really like my first Colt revolver. I hope they make the Anaconda and Python too  :shaka:

While a revolver with such a short barrel is not considered a tack driver, I wonder how it would shoot with 148gr LWC target ammo? I just got a hold of some 148gr LWC boolits and I intend to develop my own version of the old match ammo. I would not be surprised if your Colt shoots lights out with some match grade ammo.

I hope some day to own a colt of some sort. In the meantime, out of all of your revolvers, which is your favorite to shoot?

maybe I should start reloading 38sp.  I have a lot of brass

my favorite revolver to shoot
say for the purpose of shooting at kokohead, paper target or silhouette, I would have to say my GP100 with 6" barrel
its accurate, can handle hotter loads, and i'm just most comfortable shooting it
I think it was made around 1990.  i'm the 3rd owner, but I know the other 2 and they didn't shoot it much at all, so its in like new condition. or best that it can be for being 28 years old
the only changes I made were the grips from ebay made in Thailand, and fiber optic front sight (which are not on yet in the pic)
even non-revolver people like shooting this gun. very versatile.  its easy to shoot with 38sp or soft 357 reloads, and with hotter loads its very manageable
I shoot either this gun the most or my single Ten revolver in 22LR, but shooting 22LR just isn't as much fun.  although i'm probably more accurate with the single Ten, so that would be my 2nd most favorite revolver to shoot
