Which Night Sights do you prefer?
« on: June 16, 2013, 07:56:37 PM »
What are your favorite night sights and why? I'm looking to order a set for my Baby Eagle and another for a Glock.
Since I have little to no experience with aftermarket handgun sights i figured why not start a poll.

Didn't vote because I prefer iron sights and a flashlight (only way to be 100% sure of your target).  But I have used both Trijicon and Meprolight on my duty weapon.  The Meprolights are a little brighter.

Whatever you end up choosing, just remember you need to practice in low light conditions.

I have used almost every single type of sights at one time or the other in the hopes of finding the holy grail.

The one I think that gives you the best combination of visibility in no light, low light, regular light and bright light is the TruGlo TFO sights.

A lot of night sights provide a completely different sight picture in day and night applications.

The TFO's are the same regardless of lighting conditions.

I'm partial to tritium sights so I went with Trijicon, could've been Mepros just as easy.  Fibers are great during the day, but IMHO if you are using for SD you should seriously look at some tritium type night sights.  There are applications when you don't have to use lights to see your target, but have to in order to see your sights.

^^^what he said

recently installed some tfo's on a glock 17...wish they made them for more guns! id slap em on everything. i cant imagine buying any other brand of tritium sights unless they come up with similar or better technology than the tfo. i literally lol when i look through most factory night sights now, whether day or night.
with the tfo's when you transition from shaded to sunlight to darkness it instantly gives you a solid pretty consistent sight picture.

my one complaint would be the dots are too big and bright at times. its more of a self defense setup for quick acquisition in any light. shooting it at the silhouettes isnt as easy as my dawson sights with smaller fiber optic inserts and thinner front post with match rear.  oh and you sorta lose an inch of sight radius from the front sight being so darn long.

from what ive seen meprolights are a little brighter than trijicon and xs glows as bright as trijicon but even the standard dot version is too big for target shooting past 25 yards. unless its a dedicated defense gun i wouldnt buy the xs. not much fun shooting it at the range.

Brand doesn't matter so much as whether the front and rear sights are a different color.  If your sight picture is three green dots...which one is the front sight?  Green front, red or orange rear is a better choice.

That said, our club has night shoots twice a year, and one thing that becomes obvious shooting in various conditions as the light fades after sundown: by the time it's dark enough to see the night sights glow...it's too dark to see the target.....

I've seen those TruGlo TFO's in person during the day and DAYUM they are BRIGHT!!!

Personally, I have switched to RedBack One/10-8's Combat Sights.  There's a tritium dot on the front sight and none on the back.  If anyone is interested, I'll let them look up the info on the sights since I don't want to misquote the intent. I've gone through a few of RB1s classes and I've come to appreciate the intent behind these sights.  For now, they are on both my HD Glock 17s.

I have Trijicon HD on my Glock 34 that I used for USPSA/IPSC.  I like the bright orange front on the front sight.  The tritium is quite bright in low light/dark, bright enough that you can still see them when using either a gun mounted light like a Surefire X300 or a handheld light.

They combine tritium with fiber optic.

Best of both worlds.

My GF has the TruGlo TFOs on her SD9VE and she loves them. Nice and bright when shooting in the day and and well she hasn't shot anybody anything at night yet but just as bright.  For the price, quality and function you cant go wrong. 2x

I just attended a handgun night fire class this week and installed Trijicon night sights.  Night sights aren't the cure all for low/no light shooting.  They only work in dim light where you are able to identify your target, but have a hard time acquiring your sights.  This could be in the twilight hours or other dim lighting scenarios.  They don't work in very dim or no-light situations since you can't verify who you are shooting at.  In all of these cases, you would have to shoot with a flashlight.  When shooting with a flashlight, the night sights have no advantage to plain iron sights ( you don't notice the glow with the flashlight on).

That's what I discovered in class.  Either way takes a lot of training and practice.  In other words, night sights aren't really necessary, but a flashlight is.
