Need info on vehicle registration
« on: July 08, 2013, 07:11:48 PM »
Try to see if any knows how to calculate Oahu DMV "LATE" registration fees? I am looking a a vehicle that is about 6 years back on registration. Are the fees the registration cost x the amount of years past +$18 per year?  So let's  say registration cost is $386.78,  is it that amount times 6 years =$2320.68 + $108?

I had a bike in storage for a few years and finally did the "Storage Title."  To do so, I had to bring the registrations current.  The DMV computer calculated the total owed by adding the actual registration fee per year missed plus the $16/year late penalty.  These numbers can vary as fees have gone up over the years.

Unless you have the renewal reminders with the actual per-year totals, the only way I know of getting the amount owed for multiple years is to ask the DMV.

Go online to the DMV website. They have a calculator to let you add everything up.I forgot what info you need, but go look.

Also, after so many years the registration "resets" and you don't have to pay back taxes. I forget how many years that was.

So lets say you bikes "original"  reg. fee was $72.00 (and the rest of the years the same cost)  was it $72.00 times the amount of years it was to reg.'d.+ the $16 per year? I know it sucks as the DMV is closed right now. I tried the online thing but it has Hawaii"vanity" plates and it's not coming up, as well as the owner being military or former military.

The "resetting" thing was mentioned by the seller saying 5 years but at this point I cannot confirm this. I am hoping that this is the case.

They only go back 2 years. If it happens to fall out of the 2 years. You will have to pay 2 years plus the current.

Tried it a few times-no dice. It has Hawaii plates, but they are vanity type (Combat veteran) and I also tried a few combos of the last 4 of the VIN.

It's been so long, I can't remember.  It was super cheap compared to a car, I remember the lady saying.  I think they only charged registration minus taxes for the previous years, then registration including taxes for the current year.  Then I paid the title fee for the new "Storage" version.

So correct me if I am wrong, if the reg. is back 10 years then I only pay 2 late years and now the current plus fees?  Is the resetting of the registration not done or never existed?

Vanity plates should work.  Try typing all UPPER CASE with spaces if any exist.

The plate is only 4 digits and still no go.

If you are buying this car, then I recommend you take the seller to the DMV with you.  If there are late registration fees, there may be a reason.  There may be traffic tickets or other problems on his record which might explain the lack of keeping the registration current.  There are several things that can put a STOP on a DMV record to prevent renewals.  You should get the exact amounts of what needs to be paid, then have the seller pay that.  Once the DMV is happy, then you can transfer title in the same visit.

Hope that helps!

Vehicle Registration Stoppers

If the owner of a motor vehicle fails to timely pay the total amount of fees ordered for a parking ticket, a "stopper" is placed in the vehicle's record. The stopper prevents renewal of the vehicle's registration.

How to Clear a Registration Stopper

If you are the owner at the time the ticket is issued

The owner at the time the ticket is issued may get a clearance either

by paying the outstanding judgment in cash; or
if good grounds exist, by filing a motion to set aside the judgment and posting a bond secured by cash equal to the total amount of fees imposed by the judgment. The court will review the motion and render a decision. If the judgment is not set aside, the bond will be used to pay the judgment. That is, the person who posted the cash bond will not get the money back.

If you are the vehicle's new owner

A new owner of a vehicle upon which a registration stopper has been placed may obtain, from the District Court, a one-time stopper clearance for outstanding violations issued against the previous owner upon proof of title transfer.

Examples of proof of title transfer include: a certified copy of the notice of transfer of the vehicle that was filed with the applicable county department of motor vehicles (DMV); a certified copy of the certificate of ownership of the vehicle, signed by both the old and new owner, and filed with the applicable county DMV; and a certified letter from the applicable county DMV that the unpaid parking fees were incurred prior to the transfer of the vehicle's title to the new owner.

Precautions for Used Vehicle Buyers and Sellers

If a motor vehicle is sold without both the seller and buyer completing and filing the title transfer documents with the applicable county DMV, the seller is still the registered owner of that vehicle. To avoid problems, the seller should complete and file with the applicable DMV a notice of transfer of ownership to the vehicle.

Called the DMV today gave the lady the info on the vehicle, she stated- IF the plates were never surrendered/put in storage, they are still considered "active"-meaning doesn't  matter if the vehicle is not running, wrecked, just sitting in the garage.............ect.  The City and County will still charge you per year regardless.   Bummer.
As a side note-not sure if ALL DMV clerks follow this procedure- I have been told 5 yrs. back then it re-sets, the main reg. fee + $16.00 per year back, 3 years max...............ect.   Best bet is go in person and get the info on the spot.  In my case the vehicle was given to a mechanic in trade for payment on a another vehicle.

Yes. if the plates were not surrendered the charge you ALL the back years at the current rate.  I have a 1960 Mercedes 4 door that came out of an estate that hasn't been registered since 1990.. I bought the car for $2000.  They want somewhere between $1000 and $1900 to bring it current depending on who I talk to and which DMV I go to.   Unfortunatly  I will have to just destroy it..because it isn't worth that much.  I have written and called our Local politicians about how stupid this law is but never received a response.  The state and counties are cutting their nose off to spite their face.. I am ready to start paying a REASONABLE fee.. Instead.. another dead car in the yard.

The "depending who you talk to" thing is what really bothers me, you'd figure everyone would be on the same page and the fee would stay the same regardless.  I can only assume that  all the registration info should be same no matter which computer you log into.  I wonder if any of the training and procedures are updated annually???  Or are long time employees just going through "what they already know from way back when".
As for a flat rate or reasonable late fee, I agree how many people will invest more into registering a vehicle, then the actually vehicle itself???? Any the city and state wonders why there are so many abandoned vehicles.

I went to Kona and got the higher dollar figure; then went to Hilo and they came in about a $900 less..  I did not actually start the paper work at either DMV;  it was a "stand at the counter and ask a hypothetical question kind of inquiry".  They really don't know from one clerk to the next.  I was told by another Gent they only went back two years when he registered his.. Nobody can give a straight answer.  I supposed attitude and competence of the Civil Servant has a lot to do with how much a Creepy Ass Cracker has to pay....
