Shopping for .308 Single Bolt
« on: July 10, 2013, 07:43:18 AM »
Like everyone was telling me ill probably get bored just shooting a AR, they were right lol.. I guess my next toy im looking to get is a single bolt .308. Off the bat my 1st choice is a Remington 700 series, like some of us were on a budget & ill be slowly upgrading it. I was looking at a Varmint or a SPS model, for sure I wont be doing any hunting just strictly target. All this is new to me, barrel length, heavy or lighter barrel, what do you guys suggest for a newb like me..

What kind of accuracy are you looking for?  Realistically you could build a 1 moa AR upper for less than it costs for you to buy the 700.  I don't think the 700 out of the box will be much better than 1 moa.  It's the $$$ that gets you from 1 moa to 1/2 to 1/4 moa.

A .308 AR is going to cost more than a Rem 700. Since it'll only be used for the range, I'd get a heavy barreled rifle like an SPS Tactical. Then you can shoot it and see how you like it. Stick some nice glass on top. If you want to change from there, there are tons of options. Swap the stock, bed the action, float the barrel, change the barrel, etc...

The Remington 700 series are good rifles.

For out of the box accuracy though, it is hard to beat the Savage.

I picked up the Model 10 Precision Carbine in .223 and .308, and they are stupid accurate right out of the box.
They are also more user friendly if you like to tinker.

How's the stock on the Model 10, did you end up changing it also?

I noticed it does cost more for a .308 AR, when I asked my friend how much he spent I told him I'll just stick to a single bolt lol.. I got to try out his .308 AR & it was a awesome feeling  ;D That's what I hear about Remington's, a lot of options to upgrade  :)

I was the same, wanted to try something different.  So I purchased a stock Remington 700 in .308 and changed out the stock to a B&C A5, added a DBM (detachable box magazine) and one of these: http://www.kineticresearchgroup.com/products/boltlift.php

Didn't brake the bank and I put it all together.  It was all drop in components and was very easy.  There is a lot of options to upgrade, really depends on how deep your wallet is.

The accu-stock comes with these rifles. The are not the greatest, but not the worst either.
I have two Manners stocks and after market DBMs, along with a couple bolt handle replacements, but have not changed them out yet.

You can just buy the barreled action if you plan on changing out the stock, or just the action itself.
It is a lot easier to change out the barrels by yourself with the Savage. Even the bolt handles, and bolt faces.

If I had known better, I would have gone with just the barreled action. Still might. ;D

Why not get a Mosin?

Cheap Gun.
Cheap Ammo.

I don't care for Mosins ( and I have 2)

They just don't do it for me.

I guess they don't do anything better than anything else I got. Not sure how to explain it but I just don't "enjoy" shooting em.

I guess the only reason I like them is because I can buy em cheap and stack em deep; also not worried about beating them to hell, because I will always have extras.

Other thing is that ammo seems to be cheaper than .308 (Don't know, as I don't look at .308 prices); if they can beat $.40 a cartridge, I may need to get me a Rem 700

To me cheap ammo is he only reason to buy a Mosin.

I'd rather buy an AK.  (I know, I know, wrong thread)

It really depends on what you want to achieve in your build . I have a rem700 xcr lrt (long range tactical) built from the ground up . This little monster makes a hole in one at 100 and holds constant shots out to 1500 . Yet I have a Sr25 which gives me a 1/2" at a 100 and stays true up to 11-1200 . As for me I like to send things out and make every shot count . The Remington is on an ax acis chassis so it's super stable and a N/F 5.5-22x56. It wasn't cheap building it I won't lie but it does what I want it to do .

I just bought one of these on gunbroker for $629, if Kokohead is your longest range 16" is all you really need.  I was originally looking at 300 blackout but decided I can just as easily load subsonics with all the .308 stuff I already own, no need to retool for another caliber.
