thanks for referrals jaynick!  I am not battery savvy so just bought whatever the shack had.  Unnerving now to mix and match but will see.

to elaborate on my post; you either need a battery with overcharge/overdischarge protection, or a good charger that has overcharge protection that can sense the capacity of a battery and stop it at its full charge. a lot of generic chargers keep charging until the batteries protection circuit kicks in.

the best is to get both to be redundant. the charger i posted can charge nimh and li-ion and it can charge all types of li-ion. it has a processor that can tell what batteries are in it so it gives optimal current. it also has overcharge protection.

i guess we should start a separate thread on power strips and battery backups

Where?  I got sick and tired of shorting out the cheap switches on power strips and discovered that the wiring inside one them was something like 22 gauge, certainly not enough to safely carry the load of four or five outlets.

I'm also tired of them selling stuff in this country with no distributer's or manufacturer's address to holler at.  Or take legal recourse.  And you can't even find an "Agent For Service" for them at the state Secretary of State's office if something really goes flooey.

Daniel at KSG sells boxes of 123A batteries at mail order prices.  I keep a box around since they store well.

I've been ordering batteries from lighthound.com for years.  Usually get together with a bunch of people to order at least 50 so the price drops to $1.25 each.  Throw in a flashlight or some other small stuff and USPS priority mail shipping is free after $75.  Over all my orders from them I've probably gone through 500 batteries and haven't had one problem with the battery station batteries.

Surefire batteries. A box of 12 was $27.95.
Mail order is a little less but when you factor in shipping, KSG is a good deal and  it supports our LGS.
