Bringing a handgun into Hawaii..
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:52:37 PM »
 Aloha, everyone!
I'm moving to Hawaii & would like to bring a handgun.  From what i can read in the law, i can bring it in my checked baggage as long as i tell the tsa it is there, unloaded, locked in a case.  Then i have 3 days to register it with the Honolulu Police dept.  I've traded 2 of my 15 round mags for 2 -10's.  So then i can take it to the range, locked in the case, unloaded, & shoot it.  As long as i keep it at home, it is ok.

Is this basically right?  Any problems bringing it?  I don't want it to be confiscated because i missed some detail, nor go to jail because i misread or misinterpreted something.

Once i get settled, i plan on applying for the cc permit.

I'll be on oahu, plan on going to the range every so often.. maybe i'll see some of you there!

On a side note, is there decent long range shooting at the outdoor range on oahu?  200yds+?  Not for the handgun, obviously..

BTW, i have a gen 4 9mm glock & S&W K-22 masterpiece.  I'll probably just bring one for now.

Thanks in advance..
scotty

right on, except it doesnt need to be locked taking it to the range.

for sure lock the handgun case to your luggage.  I had mine in the Glock case with a chain going through the handle locked to the frame of my luggage.

oh, welcome :shaka:

+1 on that.  Also, when in transport to the range do not have your ammo   in the same case as the gun, I have been told that even if a loose shell   is in contact with the firearm it can be considered loaded.  Keep your mags, bullets, and gun separate.

The range at Kokohead has provision for your own target stands out to   100 yards, but there is also steel plates at ~200,300,400 yards.  There   are clubs (puuloa.com) that hold service/match rifle and mid range   F-Class to 600 yards.  However, these are held on military ranges, and   only used during the match, so practice and load development is all done   at Kokohead.

mahalo for the replies.. so no horror stories or problems bringing a handgun from out of state?  No issues registering with hono pd?

..good to hear about some steel plates at longer distances.  400 yds will be great.  I'll be shipping over a bushmaster varminter for the distance shooting.  I'll have to look up a ffl to ship it to.. unless someone on oahu knows of one on the island.  Then i might just get it locally.  No problems with a semi 223 with 20" + barrel?

Out of curiosity, why?  Might be bringing a Saiga 7.62x39 and have mags... just wondering why you'd recommend leaving them behind.

The AR/AK mag controversy. Word for word the law says "Assault pistol" and rifle mags (AR/AK) that also fit pistols must be limited to 10 rounds. All rifle mag capable pistols are banned in Hawaii, so why then would you restrict a rifle-use only magazine? Who knows. That's the controversey, that's why its better to leave them at home!

He just meant leaving them home as in not taking them with you to the station. Magazines aren't required for registration so why lug down more than you have to? :)

Gotcha.  Coming from a California state of mind, I was thinking they'd be confiscated.  Here in California they would!  :grrr:
