General Discussion / Want to work at Koko Head?
« on: April 05, 2023, 08:02:48 PM »
KHSC is hiring RSOs @ $16.85/hr.

Do you have the patience to put up with all of the repetitive stupid questions, complaining and bellyaching that'll probably come with the job?  And keep an eye peeled for safety violations by the noobs?

Apply now!

Reloading / Squib!
« on: April 11, 2021, 11:12:45 PM »
As a general rule I don't shoot other people's reloads.  Today I was testing a new SAA-type revolver at Koko Head.  My 19 year old .45 Colt loads shot OK (255 gr swc over 8.1 grains Unique).  I brought along some reloads a friend gave me when he moved to the mainland--250 gr. swc over 6 grains of Trailboss and sure enough the 12th round (more or less) was a squib.

The primer blew the bullet into the forcing cone and tied up the gun.  A few whacks with the RO's range rod and hammer jammed the bullet back into the case and I was able to clear the gun then put it away.  Guy then showed me a pic of a S&W 1917 that blew up this past Thursday.  A bullet stuck in the barrel and the next round split open the barrel about 2" from the muzzle.  Unfortunately a shooter next to the 1917 caught a bit of shrapnel in his upper left arm and lost a little blood.

I hope that the firearms "trainers" who use KHSC brief their students about the possibility of squib rounds and the danger they present--it's bad enough to have to put up with newbie gun handling.

If I see Guy again next week I'll try to remember to get a copy of that picture to post here.

General Discussion / Letters to the Editor
« on: July 13, 2020, 09:57:19 AM »
If you read today's letters to the editor there is a letter full of anti-gun propaganda.  I have written a letter to the editor that will hopefully counter the misinformation presented and if it gets published it will be one step towards promoting the second amendment.  The first amendment means little if you don't make your voice heard so I would urge all of you to write to the newspaper.

no emojis this time, I'm actually serious for once (or twice)

Legal and Activism / Firearms Confiscation During Crisis
« on: April 17, 2020, 10:25:20 AM »
This is the newest article printed in the HHAA newsletter:

Q:  Can my firearms and ammunition be confiscated during a crisis?

A:  In 2010 a law was passed to protect owners of firearms and ammunition.  Seizure and confiscation are prohibited under state law in a time of a crisis or emergency such as COVID-19.

134-7.2 HRS:  "...no person or government entity shall seize or confiscate, under any civil defense, emergency or disaster relief...or during any time of national emergency or crisis...any firearm or ammunition from any individual who is lawfully permitted to carry or possess the firearm or ammunition...."

There is also a federal confiscation prohibition (42 US Code Sec. 5207)

Well, whoda' thunk it in this state?

General Discussion / LOCKDOWN
« on: March 23, 2020, 08:39:10 AM »
OK, now that fearless leader has "locked down" Oahu (and this probably applies to the neighbor islands as well) what are your thoughts and concerns?

Will HPD suspend permitting and registration?

Will gunshops close?

If panic buying was bad before (rice and toilet paper), what's it like at the stores today?

Firearms and Accessories / Would you buy a true "suicide"special?
« on: December 21, 2018, 05:22:30 PM »
Over the years I've seen a few used (estate) or consignment handguns in lgs that had obvious signs of blood staining, which leads me to believe that the previous owner committed suicide with that handgun.  Some of the guns were great deals but for me I would not buy such a gun.  Would you buy a handgun that you strongly suspected was a "suicide special?"

Reloading / Blown up Glock
« on: July 26, 2015, 01:56:36 PM »
I heard from one of the RO's at the pistol range today that someone blew up a .40 Glock this morning.  Apparently it was a double charged reload that split the barrel open--a "banana split" was how the RO put it.  I guess no one got hurt.  Anyone witness the "event" today?

Preparedness and Survival / What are you prepping for this weekend?
« on: August 07, 2014, 07:00:30 PM »
OK, forget about overpriced water and expired MRE's.  What are you loading up for this weekend?

Me--every AR platform cleaned and oiled, every single magazine loaded with good ol' ball ammo.

1911 .45s stashed here and there with loaded mags, .38 J-frame loaded with FBI rounds in pocket at all times.

Sharpened every kitchen knife and a few Randall bowies.

Go-bag:  overnight toilet kit, meds for the week, 1911 in holster with extra mags and ammo, Randall Model 14 with diamond sharpening rod, flashlights, sewing kit, bandaids, couple bottles water and a few energy bars, lots of $20 bills.  Roll of duct tape, coil of baling wire, pliers, scfrewdrivers, hammer and socket set.  Machete strapped to packframe.  300 feet paracord in 100 foot hanks.  White terrycloth towels.  Couple of 5 gal buckets with lids in the car.  Tank's full, case of water in the trunk, 2-3 army blankets, 2 folding chairs, bag of charcoal and lighter fluid, hibachi grates, matches, Zippo lighter with spare flints and fuel, stogies,   Bottle of Jameson's, plastic cups, plastic bowls, wooden chopsticks.  Change of clothes, extra BVD's, socks, soap, bath towel, extra shoes and slippers.  Large blue tarp, box of garbage bags.   Box of vienna sausage, no MRE's--sold them all to aieahound a while ago.

I'm ready, how about you?

Technical Support / What's going on with the sign-in
« on: November 02, 2013, 10:12:55 AM »
There's something funny going on with the sign-in/log-in--whenever I navigate to another site then return to 2A I'm having to sign in all over again, even though I've set the session time to "forever."

Anyone else having the same problem?

Technical Support / Vendor Classified
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:05:25 PM »
Since it's been nearly 3 years since the last vendor posting, and since they all seem to have their own thread/site, don't you think it would make sense to delete the vendor classified section?

General Discussion / ARMSLIST Scam Alert
« on: August 11, 2013, 12:00:40 PM »
I know there was a thread about some guy from Kauai (supposedly) who was scamming guys on Armslist--now it seems like the scammer has "moved on" to Oahu/Honolulu.  There's a "Polytech M-14" for sale and it sure seems like a scam--the "guy" replies in stilted formal English, doesn't give a local phone number or address, and always wants to do business through an FFL (you have to send funds first, of course).  The other rifle ad I saw was for a Colt 6920, similar spiel--the "guy" claimed to be "too busy" to meet but he'll go through an FFL dealer no problem (send $$$ first).

I got a really good deal on a CMMG carbine, which is why I still check Armslist, but the last two "deals" turned out to be too good to be true.

Anyone else have this same experience?

Off Topic / GAME 3
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:20:20 PM »
OK, here's game 3:  guess what's buried under the .22s:

Rules:

1 guess per member per day

3 guesses total, contest ends Monday 1:30 p.m.

I will provide clues periodically.

To win, your guess must contain 3 specifics--for example, "knife" is too generic, "Gerber Paraframe Folder" meets my criteria.  "Fishing lure" too generic, "Rapala diving lure" meets the criteria, got it?

PRIZE:  NIB Gerber Paraframe Folder:

FIRST CLUE:  It is not the Gerber Paraframe folder (thanks hnl.flyboy)

Off Topic / How many .22 in this container?
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:48:30 PM »
OK, here's my second game:  how many rounds of .22 LR are in this tofu container?  Winner will be the exact number or closest guess (above or below the actual total).

There IS an object buried in the container (Game 3 is figuring out what is the object, but that game will not start until after Game 2 is concluded).

RULES:  one guess per member, per day.  I'll give everyone 3 chances at it, so the game will end in 3 days (Friday 8 p.m.)

If someone is within 2 rounds (above or below) of the actual total on the first day I will declare them the winner.

At the beginning of Day 2 (whenever I get to my computer that day) I'll announce whomever is the second closest to the actual total (that will narrow it down some, but not give it away).

At the beginning of Day 3 I'll announce whomever is the closest to help narrow it down further.

Winner will be announced at 8 p.m. Friday.  Prize will be one box of Norinco steel cased 7.62 X 39 ammo I found in my ammo boxes.

Pictures will follow in the next post due to technical difficulties:

Off Topic / How much is 25 pounds of coins?
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:04:35 PM »
I just finished cleaning up my place and found that I had 25 pounds of u.s. coins stashed away in various jars, trays, etc.  I'm going to cash it in tomorrow and maybe buy something at an LGS (maybe 25 pounds of .22 ammo, if I can find it!).

How much do you think it will come out to?  Closest guess without going over the actual amount will win a 50 ct. box of .22 LR ammo.  I'll post the actual amount 24 hours from now so take your best shot at it--one guess per member please.

Firearms and Accessories / CCI Quiet 22's
« on: March 21, 2013, 04:27:48 PM »
I just tested some of CCI's "Quiet .22"s.  They are louder than CB Longs or Colibri rounds, but not by much.  It's a little louder than a high-powered air rifle.  It's loud enough to notice in an urban environment.

In my 10/22 it blows the bolt back a little more than half-way.  It's conceivable that by adjusting the recoil spring one could get it to feed and cycle.
