General Discussion / Anyone ever ordered from usaoptics.net?
« on: August 27, 2020, 12:50:13 PM »
Anyone here have any experience ordering from usaoptics.net?
I’ve been looking for a IOR Valdada M2 and they have it for a decent price (at least I think it’s decent) but I need input of whether they’re good to go or not.

Off Topic / Gofundme for Cali legal battle
« on: May 28, 2020, 04:26:59 PM »
While this is not Hawaii would anyone here care to help a fellow Asian-American’s battle against California’s unconstitutional legal system?
Short story is that the victim is a tenant in a household and police came for a unrelated to him, they did a house search and confiscated his collection of (California legal) guns, and now faces felony charges.

Off Topic / Baofeng radio ban clarification?
« on: August 13, 2019, 07:03:11 PM »
So what radios are supposedly being banned by the FCC besides the baofeng UV5R? Are other low cost radios like the Yaesu FT-25 safe from the ban?
Maybe some help understanding on a 5th grade level about what’s going on.

General Discussion / Sten/Sterling mags in Hawaii?
« on: April 26, 2019, 02:53:53 PM »
I’m not too knowledgeable on pistol caliber carbine mags in Hawaii, but is it possible to get the standard capacity mags for the Sten and the Sterling 9mm? I’m thinking about doing a build with a (16” barrel) down the road but that depends on whether I can get the standard capacity mags or not.
Is there a website that can ship them here?  Is it a special order kind of thing at the local FFL? Or does the 10 round limit apply to pistol cal carbines too?

General Discussion / Eotech zero shift opinions
« on: March 30, 2019, 10:32:51 PM »
It’s been some years since the big news broke out that Eotechs we’re having issues with the zeroing shift in extreme conditions and such.
What are your opinions about Eotech sights as of today, here in 2019?
(Would you still buy one? Do you have any change in opinions since the day eotech admitted to the problem? Is the zero shift a huge thing or just exaggerated? Thoughts?)

Firearms and Accessories / Streamlight and batteries.
« on: February 05, 2019, 12:00:41 AM »
I have a streamlight protac rail mount 2 which runs on two 3v cr123 batteries. How should I go on about rechargeable batteries? If I have to get a niche size battery that’s the size of two cr123s, what size and voltage should I get if at all possible?
I suppose I could order cr123 batteries online but the mail carriers have been very inconsistent with my packages for over a year and I like the idea of rechargeables.

General Discussion / Pepper spray guns
« on: October 28, 2018, 12:28:17 PM »
Are there any legalities of carrying a pepper spray gun concealed like the JPX pepper spray guns?
Just trying to narrow down options for someone I know who’s considering in carrying some mace/pepper spray in his edc.
He’s most likely going to go with a pocket spray, but I’m quite curious about the JPX.

General Discussion / Fixed magnification prism sight options
« on: September 05, 2018, 08:08:34 PM »
Looking for some kind of fixed magnification 3x or 4x prism sight, or “poor man’s acog” and then add some kind of micro red dot on the 12 o’clock.
Currently own a primary arms 2.5x prism sight but I’ve started getting a little tired of how cluttered the ACSS reticle is (at least with the 556/308 reticle) and Ive always had a rather unhappy but manageable relationship with horseshoe type reticles.

Would like opinions or personal experiences with the following, and perhaps bring up other options for prismatic scopes.
So far I’ve considered in:
Atibal MROC (if it comes back in stock anytime soon)
Steiner M332

Or I can:
Suck it up and buy a primary arms 3x
Break the bank and college savings for a acog

Firearms and Accessories / SKS muzzle threading
« on: July 09, 2018, 02:13:58 PM »
Got a norinco sks sporter (16” barrel and uses AK mags) that I’m trying to bubba up, but whoever had it last put a 5/8x24 thread on it. The issue with that is 308 muzzle devices don’t fit because the BARREL DIAMETER IS TOO SMALL for a 308 muzzle device.

Should I thread it for 14x1LH anyway over the existing 5/8x24 RH thread?

Any other options to mount a muzzle device on the sks?
Anyone makes/willing to make custom thread adapters?

Preparedness and Survival / Water filters for out of country?
« on: June 06, 2018, 07:24:28 PM »
So part of my family is going out to visit Vietnam in a couple weeks and they’re looking for some kind of water filtration since the water there isn’t all that great. They’re not only going to the cities but also to the countryside.
What I tried recommending them were the $15 lifestraws that you can toss in your backpack and wherever but they’re worried about viruses (it’s a 3rd world country, what would you expect from the water?) and are looking at those $50-100+ filters that weigh like an extra pound.

Anybody every traveled to 3rd world countries using lifestraws or similar?
Should I keep recommending the lifestraw to them?

I think they’re a little too paranoid and I don’t see why they’re freaking out since my mother and grandmother have been there many times before.

General Discussion / Travis Haley, Garand Thumb, and Co in Hawaii
« on: May 31, 2018, 07:46:55 PM »
As the topic headline says, Travis Haley of Haley Strategic, Garand Thumb, and their friends are here in Hawaii right now. They’re here for some filming project so if you can find them, lucky you.
If I’m not mistaken, they’re in Oahu.

Firearms and Accessories / Surefire G2x or 6px pressure pads?
« on: May 27, 2018, 02:41:03 PM »
Wondering if such a thing exists, besides the cheap amazon ones that have bad reviews.

I have a G2x and an 6px mounted to my rifles but I want to know if there are any good wire pressure switches on the market for these lights, if there is any.
I already have a streamlight rail mount 1 but I wanna make do with what I currently have on hand before dumping $100 on another streamlight rail mount flashlight.

General Discussion / Aimpoint micro spacer options
« on: April 20, 2018, 12:47:52 PM »
Currently working on mounting a holosun 503c on a a2 carbine upper with a gooseneck mount, but the problem is cowitnessing the dot to the irons. I’ve used the factory low mount that was provided with the sight but it sat too low, and I’ve even went ahead and bought a YHM 1/4” gas block riser and it’s too high. Are there any manufacturers out there that make thin spacers for the aimpoint micro mounts so I can get the right height? Kinda like the same concept as those accuwashers for muzzle devices.
Or any other solution to raise the dot to even get it to anywhere near a lower 1/3 cowitness.

Not willing to mount the sight directly on top of the carry handle since I’m not used to a chin weld. At the moment I have the red dot mounted onto a YHM 1/4” riser which is mounted to a gooseneck mount, and can’t cowitness because it’s sitting too high.

I picked up a Baofeng uv-5r radio some months ago with an extended antenna and extended battery, and I figured I should connect to some repeaters but the problem is that I don’t have much of an idea how any of this works in terms of connecting to people or especially a specific person, (or basically how any of this works in general).
I live on the Big Island, so what frequencies should I input and save?

General Discussion / Experience with Precision armament AFAB comp?
« on: March 22, 2018, 08:41:48 PM »
Does anyone here own a Precision Armament AFAB muzzle device? I’m considering changing out my J-comp v2 for some kind of hybrid device because it produces quite a concussion when I shoot my AR.
I hear it’s a solid performer as a hybrid muzzle device and doesn’t produce nasty muzzle blasé concussion but I haven’t been able to find an answer to this one question I have in mind:

How much dust/dirt does it kick up compared to the a2 flash hider when you shoot from the prone and “urban” prone?

General Discussion / Polish p64/small frame holster help?
« on: March 11, 2018, 01:08:38 PM »
Got this surplus polish P64 that needs a holster and I need some recommendations for a holster. I generally want a holster with good retention, and be able to fit molle or a 2 inch wide belt, and not too expensive if at all possible.
It’s a small frame single stack pistol about the same shape and size of a Walther PPK so my options are pretty limited, or at least that’s what I think.

I’m currently looking at:
Warrior Assault Systems Universal holster https://www.eod-gear.com/warrior-assault-systems-universal-pistol-holster/

UM84 or the Um84-II

A Russian copy of the UM84 except for their Makarov pistols https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tactical-Holster-for-Makarov-PM-PMM-MOLLE/152226034581?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

Off Topic / Anybody play orchestral double bass/stringed bass?

Anyone here play double bass for orchestra? I’d like some recommendations on strings and opinions on gut strings in this environment.

Guys I’d like to hear some opinions.

I’m thinking about converting my stock carbine upper into a mock dissipator, by replacing the a2 front sight with a low profile gas block, then mount a separate gas block with the handguard cap to where I can fit a rifle length a2 handguard, then mount a impact weapons components TMC flashlight mount on the a2 handguard or something of the like.

I’m doing this mainly because I’m not too satisfied with the carbine length handguards and I don’t have the proper tools to switch from a drop in handguard to a freefloat rail without pulling a muscle, and I’m a little convinced that it’s cheaper than buying a freefloat rail. I do have a magpul SL handguard but I like weird things, hence why I want to convert to a mock dissipator. I can always go back to the classic stock carbine just by switching out a few parts.

I also plan on getting the Primary Arms 1x prism sight when it releases for sale later this year.
I just want to know if this conversion will be worth the trouble, so give me suggestions or try and convince me not to convert aa carbine upper to a mock dissipator.

What I plan on using:
-YHM gas block/flip up front sight
-A2 rifle length handguard
-Impact weapons components TMC flashlight mount (or mod a magpul MOE picatinny rail adapter to fit the A2 handguard which I’ve done before, then add a low pro offset flashlight mount)
-Recycle the existing round handguard cap
-Any Low profile gas block
-A sacrificial gas tube to hold the handguard cap

General Discussion / Selectfire gun shop Hilo?
« on: January 11, 2018, 11:43:24 AM »
To the folks living on the big island especially in or around Hilo, has anyone ever been to Selectfire? What’s it like compared to the other gun shops in the Hilo area? It’s located at such an odd place and I just never hear anything about the store.

Firearms and Accessories / Help/Suggestions? Middy AR not cycling reliably
« on: December 31, 2017, 10:02:03 AM »
I have this 16" freefloat midlength PSA upper mated with a lower that has a A1/A2 buffer tube (5.2oz buffer). The problem I'm having is that the bolt isnt picking up a fresh round after every shot or few which I thought was odd because I emptied a 20 round brownells USGI-type aluminum mag with no problem first thing I did when I got to the range. After that I used a Lancer L5 20 rounder and it seemed to empty the first time if I recall correctly but hiccups started happening after that.
The gas block seemed to be where it should be because I used loctite on the set screws, so I initially suspected that the A1/A2 buffer was too heavy and causing shortstrokes and undergassing but the brass ejection looked rather healthy.
This is maybe the third time I've been out shooting with that particular build. The 2nd and 3rd trip I was seeing this problem.
Recap:
-Not picking up rounds (after every shot or every few shots)
-Not locking back on last shot fired
-Ejection looks decently healthy

I had very limited time on the range so I wasn't thinking about any experiments to figure out what exactly the problem was. What I'm speculating right now is either the Lancer mags, PMC bronze 55gr 223 is too light of a load, or the buffer weight is too heavy BUT I've always heard that rifle length fixed stocks works no matter what the build is, PMC is good ammo, and that Lancer mags are good. I would like your opinions before I start start dumping money on things that may or may not solve the issue here.
Specs
-16" Nitride barrel Midlength PSA freefloat upper
-Fullauto bcg
-0.750 low profile gas block
-5.2oz A1/A2 buffer and buffer tube

I'm on a really small budget so....
What are your thoughts? Suggestions? Fixes?
