Title: Dumbest thing you've seen at the range?
Post by: 2aHawaii on December 03, 2009, 11:48:28 AM
I've only been to Kokohead (from what I've heard is one of the safer ranges) and haven't seen anything really dumb. The closest thing was someone not knowing the rules and double tapping.
Have you guys seen anything dumb?

1. Aimpoint mounted backwards and without batteries, yet shooter swore he could see the red dot.

2. Shooter with a Dan Wesson revolver without a rear sight. He sighted down the barrel, closed both eyes tightly shut and yanked the trigger.

3. National Guard trained marksmanship instructor - wanted to shoot a friend .22lr Win 52D and bought a box of 22-250 instead at Sports Authority

I couple of young men sat down to my right at the silhouette range.  they had a variety of guns, including a new .50 AE semi-auto (maybe a Grizzly?)  one had just bought.  As they shot the other guns, they were obviously inexperienced, and were not particularly conscious of muzzle discipline.  Then they moved on to the big gun.

The young man whose gun it was struggled mightily to run the slide and chamber a round.  Note the operative words "chamber a round."  A range officer observed the difficulty and came over to offer advice.  he told the young man to place the but of the grip on his stomach, which is a technique I generally approve of in such situations.  He didn't mention to first turn your body sideways to the firing line!  So this fellow, under the watchful and approving eye of the range officer, puts the LOADED AND CHAMBERED .50 AE on his belly, pointing straight ta me!  They all looked up surprised when I tried to push my stool backwards and ended up falling over then crabwalking away from the line, then went back t re-racking the loaded gun with it STILL POINTED STRAIGHT DOWN THE FIRING LINE!

I sat back on the benches behind them, waited until they took a break, then packed up and fled.  I was not about to stay on a line when the range officers were instructing people to point loaded big-bore guns at other people.

Man, Tom, that is one scarry story. Maybe a little funny when you fell off your chair :) but range officers should at least know the basic rules of gun safety.

Shooters who flag others and think its OK since the gun is not loaded.
Getting into arguments with ROs about why they can't:
- load more than 5
- shoot at silhouettes
- rapid fire
Sneak onto the bench when the ROs aren't looking during a ceasefire.
Mag dumps when the ROs aren't looking
Open carry around the range.

getting muzzle swept is always fun...

weather it be by a shotgun, a rifle, or a handgun, there is always some dumb ass doing it at the ranges I have been to.

Why is that dumb? The way some people shoot, their sights are a total waste!

Lady pulled a 360 right next to me twice on different occasions, rifle was loaded, they thought it was a joke when I warned them the first time, the second time she did it again they started laughing, and sent them packing without the RO's help.... Frick man I don't want to get my jewels  blown off!!!

someone forgot to put target paper up and they just was shooting there card board, to me i thought that was strange but funny. I told them that they could hit my 100yrd if they wanted to.....

the only thing i did wrong was bring out my rifle out of my case 10 mins before the range was open... i think thats about it....

I saw a guy once, during live fire, take off running down range with his target.

He planned to set up his target while people were shooting.

Everyone just yelled at him.

He came back and was trying to explain himself.

Everyone was so pissed off at him, I'm sure nobody was listening to his excuse.

No.

This was on the rifle side.

Far left by last benches.

Maybe 4 or 5 years ago.

you mean bench huggers? You know what I use to do, I use to jump in there conversations and end asking if I could shoot prone on there lane, sometime if they have the same caliber rounds that I use, I say things like" what ammo is that, can I try a couple?" It works most of the time, worst they could say is NO. Try it some time and see if it works for you..... Lol :shaka:

Let see if you have the Jedi mind trick.....

Once saw  the RO lose his mind on a guy sweeping the muzzle 180 degrees back.
RO says politely " Don't sweep the muzzle "
A little louder " DON'T sweep the muzzle "
Guys still doing it, pointing back at everyone.
RO: " HEY ASSHOLE, I SAID DON'T SWEEP THE DAMN MUZZLE"
He cased up and went home.

Stupidest thing I ever saw was done by me on my second trip to the range.
Wind blew my cardboard off my target stand and it stopped in the tall grass just behind the pistol range, which was still live.
Decision to make, end my day or make a run for it. ( Tall CMU wall, looked safe enough to a newbie )
Decided to make a run for it.
Just got to the target and RO is on the bullhorn/loudspeaker chewing my ass out.
Mounted it back to my frame, took the walk of shame back to the line, and got my ass chewed out !
Now I not only staple the cardboard, but tie it to the frame as well.

At least it wasn't as dumb as trying to set a target while the range is hot. .

Last weekend the RSO at koko was scolding some people how they left their guns during ceasefire. he goes back to his own bench and his revolver is clearly loaded. he still doesn't unload it. and to top it off he let's his friend cross the yellow line to show him that a piece of his gun broke and continued to talk story while holding his gun. people are down range during this time. I should have said something but I didn't want to get kicked off. Next time i think it's worth the safety of others so i will speak up. that part is my fault.

So, the RSO is on the clock and is responsible for watching over the safety of shooters, right?

The RSO is obviously working if he's scolding shooters.  Can somebody please explain how the RSO is also allowed to be shooting?  I don't care if there are only two positions used at that entire area.  If the RSO is being paid to do his job, I fail to see how he can be practicing at the same time!

Maybe it's just me, but stealing from the state/tax payers seems wrong (being paid for shooting practice).

A lot of those RSO's go shooting on their days off.

Even if they're off they still scold everyone that does anything wrong.

He might not have necessarily been on the clock.

You'd be surprised to know that about 1/3 of those guys aren't getting paid at any particular time but just go to the range to hang out with their friends and shoot.

Thanks for clearing that up.  Wasn't trying to get down on the RSO's because they have a tough job some days.  But the way the story went, that particular RSO was letting himself be distracted.  And IF he was on the clock, it was all kinds of wrong!

Looks might not always be deceiving though.  Very recently had a shooter to our left start bitching very loudly to a shooter on his left.  Conversation went something like;  "Hey man, your empty shells are flying this way and hitting me.  You should  be more careful and put up a cardboard.  Or some people even use a net.  What you're doing is very inconsiderate and annoying.". It was something to that effect anyway, and he seemed to be extremely distraught with having empties flying his way.  The complainer then finished up shooting his revolver, took out a pistol and started raining either .380 or 9mm cases on everyone to his right.  My wife was like, "did you hear that guy grumbling about empty cases and he doesn't care that his crap is flying everywhere?"
The guy also walked up to the bench and messed with his stuff during two cease fire periods while shooters were down range.  RO caught him the second time as he was there awhile packing up his guns to leave.  It's getting more and more common even on this pistol side now.

I'm so tired of whiny bitches complaining about brass hitting them.

We live on a small island with 1 public range.

It's shooting you whiners.

* NEWSFLASH * brass flies at ranges.

I've been hit with literally hundreds of rounds of brass over the years. I've never once complained.

That's like some guy on the swim team crying about another swimmer splashing him while he's swimming.

Then there are those that shouldn't be dumb or should know better but still do unsafe things.  One weekend a couple of months back several members of a local law enforcement agency showed up at the range.  The ringleader of their little troupe almost put a hole in his buddy.  He was standing there talking with his buddy, carrying on about work,  all the while he was pointing the pistol at his  buddy.  I could see m9's slide was in battery, but before I could say anything an off duty RSO came up and pointed this out to him.  He didn't say "sorry" or "my bad",  "oh it's ok I know it's not loaded." is what he told the RSO   :shake:   :wtf:  from two stalls away I could see the action was closed.  I know on the early model m9's the extractor would stick out a little but and act as a loaded chamber indicator, but damn!  What ever happened to the first rule: Always assume it's loaded?

Of course.  They go in a lot easier that way. Especially if you use them shorter 9mm Corto bullits in a 9mm Parabellum clip.

I really hate when people just walk up and start touching my firearms. Only happened maybe twice, but it happened nonetheless. At least have the common courtesy to ask, and I will have no problem letting you handle them. But for some reason, guys have walked up and just started touching for no reason, in which case I had to put in my asshole hat and get pissed.
Some people are just plain stupid doing that & have no common sense, these type of people really piss me off. I would be pissed & going off at these type of people if it happened to me also.

I was killing time on youtube (how does that always happen?) and I searched for Manuka shooting range which is where I go...

I come across this video..

I think i lost count how many times the guy shooting the pistol flagged everyone with it.

In one of this other guy's videos he pans to the table with guns laid out.. Oh, and doesn't forget to show the bud light opened on the table  ::)

I guess there is no ROs or medics?
Place looks like a landfill or dump

Nope.. It is basically just a hunting area that has been improvised into a range. Nobody there to supervise.. etc.. And yes I think I am the only one who picks up their own trash. Although everytime I have gone the other folks who showed up and shot near me were always courteous and safety conscious. But it is uncomfortable to have random people shooting around me. There is more than one place where people shoot, all in the same vicinity and I also worry about rounds from the other areas coming towards me  :o No real barriers setup.

I've never had this happen and I would NEVER think to handle someone else's firearms without asking first, especially someone I don't know. I'd ask WTF they were thinking, but that's the point. I certainly would be pretty of someone had just come up and started handling guns.

Dude walking around with his rifle on his shoulder, from his car to the bench. Never set targets, just shooting the shit!!! After the seize fire and go behinds the yellow line command was given, he put the rifle back on his shoulder and waited behind the yellow line!!!  I think he wasn't from around here because he couldn't speak English and had a hard time understanding the range officers.he got chewed out so bad that I had to buy him something to drink.

yeah, and some come up to your shooting area/bench while you're ready or about  to squeeze the trigger, and they start talking to you, asking questions, etc...Man, can't you see I am trying to shoot here!..that's when I switch shooting my rifle to the one with the compensator...lol

Does this happen alot? So what's the range code again? Is it" if you touch my shit without asking, ill drop your ass!!!"- you guys don't use this code anymore? It's part of the Bro code.... On under the index of common courtesy among men!!!

I've never experienced either. I've let guys shoot my guns no problem, but it was after starting a friendly conversation. A guy let me try his bolt gun, which I'd never shot before and he tried my AR, which he had never shot before. After that, I bought a bolt gun and he said he was going to buy an AR. Good stuff!

Nobody has ever walked up and touched my firearms.

I guess I don't look like a "it's ok to touch my stuff, kind of guy"

Been there a few times.  Always take home more trash than I bring just because others don't clean up after themselves.  I only shoot there if there is no one else shooting because as Haoleb mentioned it can get kind of sketchy if others are not safety minded.  There were a few times I did not shoot there because there were too many people and there were bud lights and hibachis so I figured better to come back some other time.   :shaka:

Left my house early and went this morning, showed up about 6:30. Started out zeroing my AR over on the right side where all the concrete barriers are lined up at 100 then 200 yards, first time shooting at that side but I wanted to have the range to myself if someone else showed up. Then moved over to the other range that those guys in the video were shooting at for some shotgun fun and left just after 10:00  Not a single soul showed up the whole time. I wish it was always like that!

Yep, nothing better than making the turn and seeing zero cars.  Last time I went late on a Weds afternon and no one.  Time before that was about 2:30 on a drizzly Saturday afternoon.  No one.  Hit or miss but great when you have it all to yourself!
