Title: Stories of the HPD firearms room
Post by: aieahound on March 18, 2015, 06:41:34 PM
I don't know if this goes here or in off-topic, but I'll put it here.

What are some of things you've seen while at HPD ?

I've seen guys sweep the whole room.
Saw a guy have the bolt from his rifle fall on the floor twice today.
Saw a guy who couldn't lock back his slide.

I personally bought a revolver from a fellow forum member, transfer took place just outside HPD.  (Didn't take it out of the case cause I know the guy)
Went to the window and popped the cylinder and almost shat myself as it looked completely loaded.
Was completely loaded with snap caps. Boys behind the window laughed their asses off at me.

Edit: crazy deleted. Thanks Tom.

I don't know about crazy things, but twice, I've been there when a man (not the same man twice, two different occurrences with two different men) was trying to register a shotgun he'd inherited from his dad.  The serial number (both times) was stamped under the furniture, and the men didn't know how to disassemble the shotguns.  These were both old-style, hinge action "pop off the forearm" types, and I was able to assist them.  I guess we could file that in the "trying to register a gun that you don't know how to operate" category.

lessee.... I injured myself once by carrying all the guns I brought back from a mainland trip in to register at once.

Oh yeah. I was there when a guy had a tripod mounted 50 cal. That couldn't fit under the window.

Thing looked like a 20mm cannon.

I saw a officer hand back a firearm registration to a guy and told him to fill out the medical section,he damned lost his mind trying figure out whos his physician or who he's covered by, after 10minutes his hands on head thinking, he called his wife and got the answer in 10 seconds.

While waiting in line in the lobby, several times I've seen guys walk up to the glass window telling the asian lady behind the glass he was an SO and handed her an Id. Before the lady takes the Id she puts on latex gloves. I was wtf was an SO? Gone back several times to register and seen the same thing happens several times. Finally one day I read the sign on the window. SO registrations Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then it dawned on me SO= sex offender. I lost my sh!t in line and broke in stitches. The SO in line looks back at me and I tell him "I get the latex gloves now" dude walks out without registering. On my way out 20 mins later I see him walking back in trying to register again. I couldn't help myself and blurted out "Ohh yeah that's right, it's tuesday" and the guy walks out again!

I've been sitting back against the wall facing the window while waiting for a registration to be typed, when somebody walks up to the window with a rifle.  He uncases the rifle with the muzzle pointing to his left -- directly at the head of the guy sitting at the little table!    :shake:

One particular day, three people in a row did it, and the guy in the chair was getting pretty annoyed.  He never got annoyed enough to say anything to either the rifle owners or the officers at the window.  If I had been sitting there, I would have made a comment to the owner concerning his unsatisfactory muzzle discipline.

Since then, I'm very careful to uncase long guns muzzle to the right if there's someone sitting at that table.   :D

I've seen people go to HPD three times to legally get a handgun. Honestly, I have.

1. Last time I was there I was registering 3 C&R guns (2 Rifles and 1 Pistol) and took them over an hour and a half to do the paperwork. I had to go back and feed the parking meter.

2. Plenty of muzzle sweeps around the room. But one day the guy sitting at the table was whacked pretty good in the head by a shotgun.

3. I tried to register a Ruger 10/22 without a stock and a magazine. They refused numerous times because they kept telling me the gun was not complete. I kept telling them the only thing missing was the stock and mag. And they kept insisting some other part of the gun was missing and wanted me to bring it back when I put it back together. About that time I told them they just registered 4 AR lower receivers for me two weeks before. I also told them all the parts they saw was going to be removed and I was going to only keep the receiver and replace everything else. They finally registered it.

Speaking of receivers......beware the guy with the small box.

In line one day and guy in front of me has a small box.
Figure, cool today will be a quick register.
Guy pulls out 10 stripped lowers.
Wasn't so quick after all.

I've haven't seen anything crazy happen on my trips to HPD, but I have watched on two separate occasions people picking up a carry permit. I assumed they were permits for open carry or LEO, never got the chance to ask.

Several years ago, I went in to register a few firearms. I believe about 4 pieces, all military style black guns.
There was a rather sexy middle aged local Japanese lady about 30's several spots behind me. It was a most likely a first time owner with a pistol to register.
Since I had four guns, she approached the window while the Officers were still founding with my firearms. Both of us finished at around the same time. As I was packing away my shit. I get a tap on my lower back, I turn around and it was her. She said in a rather sexy voice, "wow! BTW You got some real cool guns."
It was rather pleasant to hear such a comment at HPD and from a girl.

Sitting on the chairs against the wall.  Guy is at the table with plastic shopping bag, pulls out gun drops mag and racks out a round before placing under the window.  his back was to the window so they never see nothing.  I was just glad not to be statistic of an ND.

Standing in line facing the Firearms Registration door.  I hear someone walk in the entrance door, and stops at the Records Office, and say.....Is this where I register for a sex offender?

Of course I wanted to turn around and look.  I had the urge not to.  LMAO.

I guess I tend to bring in interesting guns to register (like my Springfield M6 Scout/Pilot Survival Rifle/Shotgun), since about half the time, an officer takes my guns back into the office to show off to the guys who aren't working at the window.

When I was registering my Century VZ-58 with the "beaver barf" (Bakelite with wood chips to reduce weight) furniture, the local Japanese-looking officer behind the window asked me what type of wood it was since he couldn't figure it out!

Another time, I saw a newly transplanted military guy come in with about 10-12 rifles in a bundle wrapped in a blanket. I was talking to him about Hawaii's transport laws, and he told me that he called HPD and they gave him the ok to bring the guns in that way.

The guys and girls that work back there are definitely gun people. Something unusual or particularly nice will generally generate interest. When I got my Saiga 12 my son picked it up for me and I registered it when my permit came in { yes, it was done legally }. Since it was around the house, I had a chance to modify it with quad rails, breacher brake, collapsible stock, etc. { yes, 922r compliant } It must have been one of the first that they'd seen like that because they asked me if it was OK to check it out and passed it around the room for 15-20 minutes.

When I brought in my C&R guns for registration one of them came over and engaged me in conversation wanting to know certain details about them. Including what I paid for them. He wrote down the names and website addresses of the of the suppliers. He was well informed about the CMP as well. That has never happened to me before.

I walked in to apply for a permit when I first got stationed out here, they asked for my id and I handed it to them and they said you had to be 21 to apply for a long permit. It's pretty damn crazy that the rest of union can purchase long guns as soon as they're "adults" but out here you're still treated like a child. So I can go to war and have machine guns and grenade launchers issued to me but I can't buy a 10/22 out here?  :grrr: something seem a little fishy there? :grrr:

In other states you go to the fun shop find something you like pays yer money and leave with yer firearm.  It's about like that paying for and getting your CHL too.  I seriously don't know what the problem is here.

On other fronts, after 10 years and reading all the stories here, I finally learned NOT to sit in the muzzle sweep chair at the head of that table.  You know the one directly to the left of the window.  Not sitting there anymore.  Always going to sit with my back against the wall behind those at the window.  While I was filling out my paperwork saw just about each and every one at that window muzzle sweep that chair position.

Yes you do. But you're probably too polite to go into a lengthy rant using a lot of bad words to call out the people responsible for the "problem".

In Hilo you have a choice to point the muzzle at the firearms registration office, or at the chief's office (both are floor-to-ceiling glass). Sometimes they want to see the other side of the gun so you go from pointing at one office, sweep the ceiling and the entry/exit stairway, to the other office (because they don't like to try and read fine print upside down). I presume they've never had a negligent discharge, or things would be set up differently. Only "unusual" things I've seen there: 1. A guy came in with a rifle partially wrapped with a dirty ragged towel with half the barrel and half the buttstock uncovered. I was curious what staff would say to him, and when she came out of the office she courteously explained that he needed, in the future, to have something that enclosed the entire gun, and 2. I picked up a pistol permit, and as I was leaving saw a guy starting to unload a van. I went to the gun store, filled out the 4473, got my pistol, and came back to to the PD to finish the registration, and saw that there were at least thirty gun cases piled up three feet high against the wall, and two feet out onto the floor. The guy had just moved here from Idaho, and was at the table with a pistol saying "This was my grandfather's service sidearm in World War II..."

Just yesterday there was some older military guy registering 2 antique rifles
First of all he transports them in gun socks only
Then he is finding some papers while his rifle is standing on the ground while leaning on his leg
I'm sitting in the corner chair by the window when he drops the rifle on the ground, pointing right at me
Then he keeps looking for the paper leaving the rifle in the middle of the floor with everyone standing around it
I was going to help him, but I didn't want to touch the rifle just in case something weird happened.
And this guy is in the military. :wtf:

Seen people get there firearms confiscated. Sad.

Seen people turn in heirlooms for destruction. And the whole room trying to buy it but the guy refused.

Hot girls applying for long gun permits.  And all the guys behind her always making comments.

Guy came in with a loaded gun.  Almost got arrested! Got scoldings

last time i went about a week ago, as well as a few other times while standing in line,
I hear someone talking about firearms.  about how this rifle is better than that one, or this handgun is better than that one.
how this ammo has better stopping power
or how accurate this rifle is with that ammo.
how much better an AR is vs an AK
or how Glocks are over-rated, or 1911's are outadated.
sounds like a conneseur of firearms, right?

then when that someone steps to the window, turns out this is their first time getting a permit, and they never owned a firearm before in their life.
now I realize this person has been talking out of their arse.  ???

the experienced guys probably know enough that they are sick of those discussions (9mm v 45ACP, AR v AK, Glock v 1911, Semi v Revolver).

then when that someone steps to the window, turns out this is their first time getting a permit, and they never owned a firearm before in their life.
now I realize this person has been talking out of their arse.  ???

lol.... I'm of the mind that a great gun is the one that functions reliably and the best gun is the one you have on you.

I was blading at 45 degrees just reading that  :D
Stop!  You will not shoot my foot!  LOL

Speed- there was a hot one today, brown eyes, long hair, tank top and all.  Very purdy girl!

sex offenders have the option of also going to the downtown city hall to register

sex offenders have more options for registration than law abiding gun owners.

Yeah, gotta keep those priorities and the pecking-order intact. Gun owners get the respect we deserve from "our" government. Reminded me of the scene in Annie Hall where Woody Allen is espousing his JFK assassin conspiracy theory and when his girlfriend asks if everyone is in on the conspiracy, even Earl Warren and Lyndon Johnson, his response is "Lyndon Johnson? He's a politician. You know the ethics those guys have, it's a notch underneath child molester."
