Title: Anyone Interested in .22 Fun Shoots?
Post by: Inspector on April 27, 2016, 02:37:14 PM
I know some forums have enough of a following that they have .22 Fun Shoots. They usually choose a target every month and then post their results. Sometimes there is a prize, but most times it is just bragging rights. The best part is you can include your kids in this if you have some that are interested in shooting. We can have a kids competition, adults, standing, prone, bench rest. Here are some suggestions for targets you can download and print out:

http://targetz.com/fun01.htm

If we get enough interest maybe the mods can sticky this thread?

These are great fun to do.  I'm down if I can make it to the range.  Prime sports had the postal match, but not many participated...  don't know why.

That is why I want to continue it. I used to do it a long time ago when I was more active on Rimfire Central. It's all in fun and no pressure competition. Henry has a great idea here and I want to continue to push it to see if I can get more people involved. Also, I thought if we used some more clever type targets some kids might want to shoot this as well.

I like what Henry did the first time and we will have a bolt gun category and a semi auto category.

I'm really interested in seeing what that Ruger can do!!!!!

I am down! I don't have all the time in the world but I'll do what I can. The Rimfire Central challenges are fun. Would really be cool to have a local match. Prime Sports has some really good ammo in stock. My wallet is not going to like this but oh well...

Yes, we would do that or I can collect them and score them. I thought to get started we would just post them. And if we got into scoring them I would offer a small prize for the best target that month.

I'll put together some rules and classifications, I'll pick out a target and we can get started next month.

Thanks Dave for setting this up. I can't wait to dust off the ol Winny with Williams and see how bad my eyesight really is.  ;D

May I suggest for the future a periodic "group shoot" where everyone can come out and meet each other, shoot the $h17 and share info.

Actually, I was thinking that if we get enough people doing this then we could get together occasionally.

Here are the prizes:

2. The grand prize is a brand new KHSC Pistol Frame that has been built and generously donated by Heavies. To qualify for the grand prize you must first shoot one of the categories in the May 2016 fun shoot and upload your target/score to this thread. Then you must download and print this target on 8.5"x11" piece of paper: http://www.ray-vin.com/tech/targets/sr3to50yd.pdf. You get one shot and one shot only at this target to be set at 50 yds. It is harder than you might think. That is why it doesn't matter how accurate your rifle. The wind is the great equalizer.

I haven't shot my 22s on paper for a long time. Took a couple out today, by the end of my session I was starting to get the feel for the wind holds again. I also thought I would do better with my irons. Best I could do was about 3" groups. I can barely see the target now. Lol. Still I had a blast. Literally

I talked to several members today about doing this fun shoot. And I was told by one that their gun was not very accurate. And I was told by another that they were not a very good shot.

The idea behind this is that it is a FUN SHOOT. It is not a serious competition. The last one we did with Prime Sports (Henry) I shot in the wind and did not do very good. The idea is to go out to the range and have some fun. Compete against yourself. Go out with your friends and compete against them. But don't make an excuse to NOT do it. This is something we can all do and at the end of the month we can have a meet and greet and compare notes and have a good time doing it. It doesn't cost much and you can include your family and friends in this. BTW, this is the perfect way to get someone into shooting and to get them to participate here in the forum.

Yeah it was fun to shoot 22s on paper after a long break. I shoot 22s@100m at the silhouette side often but haven't shot for groups or score for a long time. It was really fun, but humbling, and hope to be doing it more. I didn't shoot the designated targets today, I was just trying to get a feel for the wind calls. I'll try and print some out and give it a go next weekend.

The wind is weird at 50 yds but even more unpredictable at 100 at the rifle range. I will be shooting for score next Sunday after some sighting in of my rifle. If anyone cares to join me I will be shooting on Sunday morning 8am to 10:30am.

J has set the bar in a previous post. He has a very good score. Let's see what the rest of you can do...

BTW, next month is going to be shooting while standing with no sling, supports of any kind, and no leaning against the bench or posts. You think you were humbled by this months challenge? Wait til next month!  :shake: :shake: :shake:

So far J is leading Class 1 with an awesome score of 95. Anyone think they can do better? J? You going to try and beat this score yourself?

I realize I created this and the rules so I am not going to allow myself into the competition. So I thought since I was having so much fun shooting at the star targets today that I would do it with different ammunition and different rifles. Here are my results for today:

Target 1
2aHawaii Name:Inspector
Score: 80
Class :1
Scope: BSA Sweet 22 (shot @ 12x)
Rifle make:Ruger 10/22 Modified/Heavy Barrel
Ammo: SK Rifle Match
Weather conditions: Wind 10-15mph onshore winds
Excuses: Hung Over (Pounding headache)

Target 2
2aHawaii Name:Inspector
Score: 105
Class :1
Scope: BSA Sweet 22 (shot @ 12x)
Rifle make:Ruger 10/22 Modified/Heavy Barrel
Ammo: SK Standard Plus
Weather conditions: Wind 10-15mph onshore winds
Excuses: Hung Over (Pounding headache)

I am going to be shooting this most of the month and posting my different targets. I dare all of you to try and beat my best.

Finally got all materials in to complete the grand prize.

Ever wanted to go shoot pistol, at the spare of the moment,  and forgot to bring your pistol target?  I know I have, I live in Ewa Beach, so that really sucks! Lol

This target frame features a few things, IMHO, that make it perfect for you.

1. Light weight and size that breaks down small enough to store and leave in the trunk of your car or back of your truck.

2.  Large knobs to tighten and secure the frame in the closed or upright position.

3.  Robust clips to not only securely attach your target back, but also to clamp to the KokoHead target stand.  This will ensure your frame doesn't blow over on those, ever so often, windy Hawaii Kai days.

Also included will be one water proof target backer.  Because if it ain't rainin, we ain't trainin...

yes, I've been running the prototype for quite some time.  I usually use a regular cardboard backer, and plain ol' wingnuts, but I wanted to present a little more refined version.

Took a shot at it today.  Figured I'd do a warm up using a different target (1st image) thought I did pretty well. I reshot my misses so that's the reason for a few with two shots at them. Changed to the star targets and  ammo (ran out of Green Tag), Damn this is hard! Especially without a rear bag. Hella fun though!! Got to talk story with Inspector. Beautiful Anschutz!!

Username: Bushido

I shot it on regular paper today (budget). Hard to score it with regular paper vs card stock. I got a couple of Savage bolt actions that I'd like to get out with. They shoot better groups than this 10/22 but shooting for groups and score is two different things.

I'd like to give my Winny with irons a try too. Nobody has submitted a iron sight target.

I'm sure there's a ton of guys shooting this fun shoot. Why is there so little people posting their targets? Come on, this is for fun!!

didnt think about it till you posted this but I printed my target on adhesive backed paper.I think if I printed on regular paper I would have a lower score because some were very close to the edge but did not break it

I am hoping that I can shoot my Savage 1926 pump action .22 with iron sights. That is going to be tough and interesting.

Next week will be my modified 10/22 with lightweight barrel. I also have a Marlin Model 60 I can try.

I tried the Williams Peep sights a couple weeks back. My eyes were getting fatigued but managed a decent group considering. I want to give it another go I'll post it good or bad. Maybe spark some interest in irons for some

I has access to card stock several years back. So much better. The bullets literally punch holes through it. Very clean compared to regular paper that almost tears. Very accurate for scoring groups.

Nice shooting! Exactly what I was wondering. I was going to ask you if you noticed a difference between SK Rifle Match and Standard Plus. Being about 25% more in cost, I was curious if it was worth the extra price. Even your misses with the Match is close. I'm not one that likes to blame my misses on "flyers" but looking at your targets as a whole, clearly the Match is much more consistent.

I'll post a couple more targets that were shot with different ammo with lesser scores. Maybe others will start posting. I know there's more people shooting this game but just not posting.

Posting to show that I'm human and not every target is a 100pt+ target. I see a ton of pimped out 22s at the range and hoping they will participate and post their results. I did notice that the white background star was easier to shoot than the black even though both targets were scored 90. These are not submitted as official targets. Just thought I'd try.

Hoping to get my son out to the range this weekend and have him give it a go. Maybe get some of the kids involved. The kid can shoot the bolt actions pretty well.

The Rifle Match ammo actually shoots better out of my Annie. I was being interrupted a lot and being pulled away from my bench all morning. Not making excuses but it is hard to get one's head into the concentration necessary when this is happening. I just think I was having a bad day in the concentration department. I'll rebound a bit. I am going to shoot my 10/22 Lightweight this Sunday. Not quite as accurate as my heavy barrel 10/22 but close. I just don't remember what ammo works best in it so I will have some trial and error at first.

Yes, same rifle. The silohuette match does't allow a sling so I never installed one. If you want to be challenged you should try the match. It is tough. I hope I can find good ammo for it and still have time to shoot the fun shoot tomorrow. And it will be the rifle I use for next months fun shoot / rimfire challenge.

Most of the info (including pic) you will find here:

https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=2875.msg80922#msg80922

I am considering replacing the barrel with the Kidd Ultra Lightweight barrel which came out after I bought the Kidd Lightweight barrel. If I don't do that I will build another rifle using the Kidd receiver as well as the Ultra Lightweight barrel. I don't have room in my safe though.....  :shake: :shake: :shake:

Very nice rig. We really need to shoot together sometime.

I shoot at the Silhouette side quite a bit and have been asked several times if I was interested in shooting the matches. It's hard to me to spend the whole day at the range due to other commitments. I may give it a try soon. I do practice a little shooting off hand but not anywhere near where I would consider myself proficient. I may need to get my arse kicked to motivate me to practice more.

I was looking at the Kidd Aluminum Sleeved Barrels but couldn't justify the cost at this time. In my experience the balance of the rifle is more important than the actual weight. Of course most all .920 barrels are front heavy. I have a Savage that feels pretty good off hand, I would probably give that a go.

Hopefully as time goes on that more participate in this fun shoot. I'll be down there tomorrow. Stop by if you see me

If my friend brings his Annie Model 54 I will try the Rimfire Challenge with that gun as well.

Oh, and I might try shooting the grand prize (Heavies Pistol Frame) with the one shot challenge!!!!!!!

Anyone who was there today knows how impressive these targets are. The wind was gusting heavy from R to L and swirling back around from L to R. I was holding a full 2 mils at some points. It was a nightmare to judge the wind today. The few flags that I saw was dancing all day. My target looked like somebody shot it with a shotgun and then threw some rocks at it.

I'm at the silhouette side on Sunday mornings pretty regularly than move over to the rifle side after the crowd dies down.

I also shot this target with a rear bag just to see how much difference it would make. Clearly more consistent but score wise not that great. If this challenge was with a rear bag, I don't think my rifle would keep up with some of the high dollars Kidds and Volquartzens I see at the range.

I wish my bolt gun wasn't being such a bitch today. I wanted to print a target with it.

I gave a couple of targets to a 2a member who has a couple of solid 10/22s today. I hope he post them.

I shot irons today in Class 2. I used the only .22 I had with irons. I used my 90 year Savage take down pump with octagon barrel. It is a model 26 and it was built in 1926. I shot irons today in Class 2. I used the only .22 I had with irons. I used my 90 year Savage take down pump with octagon barrel. It is a model 26 and it was built in 1926. The iron sights are awful on it and my eyes are old and not that good any more. Enough excuses. My score was a 63!

See target 7 below. Target 8-10 was my attempt at the one shot using my 10/22 lightweight. It's amazing how much better it shot this week without much wind.

Username: Inspector
Score: Target 7 - 63 points
Class: 2
Iron Sights
Rifle: Savage Model 26 Pump
Ammo: Aguila Super Extra Subsonic
Weather: 0-5mph tradewinds left to right
Excuses: Bad sights, bad eyes, gun older than me...

Very cool gun and the first Iron sight entry. It's amazing how we can hit that small star and not be able to duplicate on the bigger target. I think it's a mental thing. Aim small, miss small. Either way it was really fun shooting this fun shoot. Good luck to all those shooting tomorrow. I'll be off island for awhile and hopefully shooting with my daughter in WA. I'll be following next months shoot online.

oh well, had a sh!tty day. Seems that overcast at Kokohead doesn't do me any favors. Threw a couple 7s out in no man's land  :grrr:
Had some of those days where I wanted to throw everything away in the garbage. I swear that X ring was laughing at me.  :grrr: Took a step back after a few muddabiotchz and those off call shots were likely because I was staring at the sights too long.

Distance: 50 yards
Rifle: CLE A4 rimfire upper
Sights: irons w/ Bob Jones +.50 lense. .038 rear aperture. .072 front
Ammo: Eley Sport
Sling in prone.

I had what I thought was going to be a great fun target to shoot at for one of the future fun shoots. It was going to be on the pistol side. I thought let's try an amusement park trick and let's use the star target and try to shoot out one of the stars. Well, 120 rounds later I still could not get that last little bit at the top. Got most of it by around 80 or 90 rounds. As OF would say, too sadistic.

The top star was about 60 rounds and the bottom star was 120 rounds. Damn, that was hard to see and line up sights or my red dot even at only 25 yards. Check it out:

That sounds fun. I'm not sure I can make out those stars at 25y.

Ren and Heavies, that's some nice shooting.

Was your handgun shot from bench or standing?

The first 80-90 rounds was shot standing. The last 30 or so were shot from the bench. Yeah, I got tired.

Great to finally meet you at the range!   Your target wasn't too bad.

Sorry I didn't get to meet up with you on Monday Inspector.  In addition to shooting the .22 I was also trying to troubleshoot a new upper I put together. It was really irritating me.  I didn't give it my best go.

I did see Edster and dustoff as I was leaving.  Sorry I was in a rush. Which is occurring way too frequently lately.

Inspector,
Was JHanawahine the winner of the target frame?

Yes!!!

J is the winner of the target frame.
Bushido is the winner for class 1.
Heavies is the winner for class 2.

J wins the custom made target frame. Both Bushido and Heavies each win a box of hard to find Blazer .22 ammo.

Thanks to everyone who participated! I wish more of you would upload your targets as I have seen numerous targets out there over the last few weeks.

I'll come up with the next target and rules in the next day or two for June's Fun Shoot.

Thank you Inspector for putting something like this together. I haven't shot my 22s on paper for a really long time. I do feel although you are volunteering to organize these fun shoots, your targets should count every month as any other forum member's. After all you are shooting the same target and these are "fun shoots".

I too saw several guys having a go at these targets but haven't seen them post them. My thoughts are if you really want to learn, you should participate and post. What really do you have to lose? You will probably meet some really cool guys that are as passionate about rimfires, and shooting in general, as you and can  share some knowledge. I do shoot in various positions when I can. I have never shot unsupported prone slung like Ren and Heavies. I'll probably never shoot service rifle competitively but I kind of want to learn this position now. Props to all those that did participate and post. It takes a man to put your stuff our there for all to criticize.

Thanks Bushido,

It is sort of weird to be digging into my personal stash of .22's for prizes and then if my targets are entered and I do better than everyone else, what do I win?  :shake:   I'm just happy to see others participating. And I hope the new people coming on board will get involved as well.

I also want to thank Heavies for the target frame prizes he is supplying.

We'll see how the standing position shooting popularity is going to be. I find it challenging. Some have said I am a sadist.     That could be true.......

I will say one 2A member I talked to didn't know this fun shoot was going on. I too don't usually check the "stickies" section so spreading the word might be needed. I will tell those that I see at the silhouette side when I get back.

Thank you for donating some ammo from your stash as well as Heavies for that really nice target frame. For me the motivation is just to learn, get better, meet new fellow shooters and most of all send lead down range  :shaka:.
