Mind you this is the rumor heard from the RSO's today. So take this with a grain of salt until it becomes reality, if it becomes a reality.
The new chain will be locked across the range road entrance using the new poles installed recently. The poles are installed after the archery range but before the silohuette range access road. They stated this will start on the 21st of this month. The chain will be locked across the road 15 minutes after closing and will be opened 30 minutes before opening hour. IE on the weekends that would be 4:15pm and 7:30am. It also means you can possibly get your vehicle locked in.
This means coming early to save benches is being discouraged. Also heard that the lua may be locked up as well. If people try to come early the vehicles will pile up at the chain with the possibility of overflow parking at the archery range and maybe out towards the road. When I originally heard this rumor several months ago I was told signage would be put up about trespassing. If this is true and if it does occur it may mean one cannot park at the gate and walk in otherwise you would be trespassing. There was no mention of signage this time around.

Most park restrooms are locked overnight to prevent damage. It would make sense they lock the park at night as its closed from 4pm-8am anyway.

It not un common to lock up parks during closed hours and they wouldn't lock people in willy nilly... usually they send a car to alert people.... otherwise people would cut the chain, try to off road around it, shoot the lock....

I'm guessing that the City is being proactive in the light of recent restroom vandalism. Sad to see that restroom toilets are smashed for no reason. More $$ out of our taxes. That's why we can't have nice stuff...like a world class range
-
There was also dumping of construction debris by bay 1 a couple of months ago. >:(

not a rumor
will be locked at 4:15pm daily

not a rumor
will be locked at 4:15pm daily
Makes no sense. Example: range closes at 4. How are people supposed to pack up and get out the entrance by 4:15? So people will have to stop shooting early just to make it out the gate.....
Trap range: no new shooters after 3:30, range closes at 4. We have to secure the trap house, secure the office, do the paperwork for the day in 15 minutes? Impossible! Probably the same for the skeet range.
This is going to be interesting...
My car locked in? That chain will get cut real quick.....
-
so on weekdays, i.e. Wed, Thurs, Fri, what time will the chain be unlocked? if the range opens to the public at 12 noon, but LE is using it before that?

I was told similar info.

Not only that but the trap range opens at 8:30 on Thursdays!

Well that sucks.

Well there was a ton of empty beer cans and whatever in the portapotties from overnight when I got there Sat AM. In the shitter portion. Real classy. That's going to be fun for the lua guys.
Had some women and girls that looked like they were doing a class and I was pretty embarrassed they were using the same disgusting portapotties. Looks like there's a few shooters that might rethink going to the range.

Sigh >:(

Clearly, 4:15PM is an unreasonably short amount of time to clean up your stuff.
Even the guys that work there don't get out by that time.
I think a lot of public parks close the parking lots at 7PM. That would be a reasonable time to close the gate.
I don't see why the range should be any different.
When does Hanauma close?

I agree, way too short. Problem is, range hours could be shortened rather than extending closing to accommodate the 415. One could argue it's usually the least busy time already and would affect the fewest.
Sadly, we all know we'll never be free of these kinds of savages causing problems for the rest.
-
When does Hanauma close?
this is big
tourists park in the lot and walk to hanauma
when a few of them get their cars locked in, and there is no one to contact to retrieve their cars and get back to their hotels, it's going to be a big headache for the city/state
-
Sucks. . .
Any idea what prompted this? I noticed the porta potties the week of the revolver shoot. I recall the men's restroom being in "normal" shape. I also recall the nice handsoap (Thanks Mrs. Changemyoil!).
I would assume that there are folks going there after hours and causing problems. Any reports of vandalism or thefts from the sheds? I haven't heard anything, but I also had not gone to the range for a while until the last couple of weeks. It's not like the closed chain is going to prevent any or much of that. Might even encourage those to stay in there over night as the chain would also prevent access by LE.
-
I thought most parks were sunrise to sunset?

That's when the archery range is open. As long as you can see the target, you can use your bow.

homeless people, vandalism, dumping
just general after hours shenanigans
-
if people still want to vandalize the bathrooms, all they have to do is climb over the door. there is space to get in.
their lock isn't full proof, only fool proof
but it sucks for us

I see. Don't see the chain preventing all of that.

"somebody's gotta do something"

Yeah, I hear ya. . . :(
Again, it will only stop law abiding folks from enjoying an activity that they love. Well, not stop, but in this case hinder. Then again, I suspect the chain won't last very long. . .

next time you see me in person, ask me the story about HDF staff camping overnight during shooting sports fair...

Ok. Maybe at the gun show this weekend.
I've never stayed over night, but I know some folks that have camped over before Friday night before start of SSF and Sat night in between. They didn't mention anything about folks coming around. They just mentioned how noisy it was with the winds that one year. haha
-
I don't got a problem with the closure. If you guys do then start a petition to adjust the hours on the weekends.
-
Now people will have to collect their "ricochet" evidence during cease-fires.

==========
clubs like to take full advantage of the shooting hours since we are so stifled.
I think the gate could be locked whenever they close Hanauma Bay

Or give clubs the key or some other way to access beyond “normal” hours.

Camp Paumalu Girl Scout Camp on the North Shore has a gate to prevent people from trespassing and to avoid two-way traffic. Parents with scouts have to arrive by the meet-up time, and a leader with the combination unlocks the gate. Last one through the gate locks it. Inbound and outbound traffic has to be coordinated because the road is only wide enough for one-way traffic.
Anyway, a combination lock with frequent (weekly?) changes and a distribution email/text list would be a solution. Just make sure nobody shares the combo. If they do, their group should lose combo privileges.
-
Was told today that Mike M was asked about clubs who need to get in early to set up and who close their functions at 4 which will leave only 15 minutes to put their gear away, do books ( skeet, trap etc) amongst other things to secure their ranges and leave the range by 4:15 is impossible. He said that they “need to adjust their activities”. I'm sure he getting this bullshit from those above him and he’s only the messenger but it’s still bullshit......... :wtf:

I feel sorry for the first employee who shows up late to unlock the gate.

The city park by my house has plenty homeless living there, right outside the door of the rec center
They don't even open the rec center anymore bc of them
There's sign saying park closed 1030 pm
Why don't they lock that park up too?

Doesn’t have anything to do with firearms.... that’s why... but I imagine the times have to do with when the employees leave KHSC......

I received the notice today. Per rangemaster Mike:
"Effective 3/21/18, the gate will be open at 730am & closed at 415pm Wednesday-Sunday."
Don't know why they're doing it but I hope it doesn't cause any traffic issues. I can imagine all the shooters lined up waiting to get in,
and cars backing up on the road.

Trap Range rules will change. Last squad at 3:00pm.

Anything happen today with the gate?

Restroom looks great. New stall door, fresh paint. Floor still looks like shit, literally but what can you do.

I got there at 7 am yesterday (Saturday) and the gate was open

Anything happen today with the gate?
Got there before 5am this morning and it was wide open. I heard that there were enough complaints to the parks department and the mayor that they are reevaluating the situation. So it is being put off for now. Just don't know how it is going to end up?

Still smells, too. But not as bad as it did before. Give it a month or so.
