Normally, I would agree, but seems like the direction HA is going is to make more money. Movies/TV shows used to be free, but paid for only the more recent ones. I flew HA in December and now all movies and shows cost money. Blanket charge also.
I've been on China Air and they kick HA's ass when it comes to shows/movies, food, and overall service.
But I will still fly HA because the wife has buku miles so our trips are free.
-
A new fare war will benefit consumers. HA business model is exploitative and relying on their local status to rip people off. It's like Hawaiian kidney stones or Hawaiian rat infestation or Hawaiian tax hike. I guess it's hard to blame them because it seems to work on enough consumers for them to get away with it.
-
It is hard to beat many of the foreign carriers. My wife and I flew Singapore Airlines first class on our honeymoon between Tokyo and Taipei. They gave us 2 shish kabob sticks each which I thought was the dinner. It was only the appetizer. They then gave us a menu to choose our entree. Steak, lobster tails or fish.
I feel like HA is ripping off people flying interisland and to LAS. Their fares to JFK are hard to beat tho.

there is a documented "southwest effect", fares drop 24% on average when SW enters a market
-
Hopefully there will be healthy competition and leads to better fares across the board. Hopefully none of the local airlines go out or business as a result, but understand that companies have to adjust to survive or they risk getting left behind.
I think I’ll wait for things to settle down and let SW irons out their kinks as well as consumers experiencing their service and their “tricks”. Like how my friends learned some expensive lessons in carriers like AirAsia and Scoot. Those airlines are inexpensive, but gotta be careful of the fine print and all the different fees and charges, especially if you don’t pay up front.
-
I'm hoping that this works out as a good busness model for SWA. I like flying HA, but getting to Vegas is an expensive jaunt and they put a premium going there. I just did a quick comparison on their flights to the Left Coast and LAS is $618 and LAX is $433 round trip 1 adult 3/23 - 3/31. That $200 per ticket goes a long way when I will fly 4 people over.
And Mokulele just got bought by Southern Airways Express to service inter island so we will have to wait and see on them and their pricing structure changes.
-
While I believe the competition will be good for consumers, I wonder if this will go crazy like back in the early 2000s with the inter-island fare wars. That was nuts. Inter-island fares in the $10 range where Hawaiian and Aloha were undercutting each other and another smaller carrier (I forget who) also jumping in. I remember having a $39 flight from HNL to Kona that was in prime-time slot and moving that to a different day and less busy time slot and I was upgraded to first class and got a partial refund. I assumed that at least partially led to Aloha's demise.
-
Competition is always good and Hawaiian Airlines really has little rival interisland. They are gouging the locals with their pricing and HA has a stranglehold interisland.
HA takes care of non-rev before revenue customers. No Bueno, but there is no alternative and no reason for them to change.
Top rated US airlines pale in comparison to top-rated foreign airlines. Top air carriers going west towards Asia completely kick our air carriers ass.
I like to support local companies, but eff the buy local no matter. If locals are screwing locals, competition is a good reality check.

Based on recent news stories, HA seems to be experiencing a high number of equipment problems interrupting their services. They have 10 Boeing 787-9 “Dreamliner” aircraft on order for delivery in 2021. Maybe they knew the existing fleet was becoming too expensive to maintain and operate?
These equipment issues have to be hurting profits, especially when they pay for overnight stays, rebookings on other airlines, etc.

KHON stated that a study done to the areas where SW started to fly into, prices dropped 30-50%.
Hope they can get a Vegas route.

In all the time I have lived here, yet to understand the appeal of Las Vegas to so many..
When still working at a company in SoCal, the owner's wife just loved to go there and gamble, so all the company management get-togethers were there. Also the obligatory CES show we had to attend.
I really hated the place, with the cigarette smoke and fugly people everywhere. maybe I was missing something..............
SW knocking down inter-island fares is enough for me. Unless I have to bail out for Arizona someday, no interest in visiting the mainland again.

Not as much smoke as b4, even in the rooms.
More hot drunk chicks
Go hang in the lobby at 6am. See all the walk of shame for women and walk of pride for guys.
The gambling xp is way diff being in vegas compared to an indian reservation.

OGG has enough flights. Need $49 to ITO. That is where HA screws the locals.

My HA employeed flight attendants are not happy.
Told em, i dont want HA to go down, just reduce their prices. We all know they jack up the price to vegas. All movies cost money now. No more free older movies.
Roundtrip to taiwan on China Airline is $800 and 11 hours. Almost double the distance, but not double the price. And all movies are fee.
Watched Bohemian Rhapsoday, a Star is Born, John Wick 2, Hidden Figures. 2 complete meals (entree, salad, drink, bread, fruit). Free blanket and headset.

US airlines started charging for luggage unless you're a higher-level frequent flyer. The rationale was to recover from the 911 aftermath losses for airlines.
All airlines have been posting record profits for years now. No repeal of the luggage fees. in fact, they've been making them worse. Some are talking of charging for carry-on now, since many passengers stopped checking bags to avoid the high fees.
-
Just looked at fares to LAS. Can book a round trip per person in June for $425 vs. Hawaiian for $680. That $250 adds up for a family of 4
-
Change fees are even worse. I wanted to change my flight to a day earlier to LAX more than a month in advance and HA wanted $200 per ticket. For my wife and I that would have been $400. I can see it if you were doing it one or two days before where they might not be able to sell the seat, but 33 days ahead? This was not from a non peak day to a peak day. It would have been from a Wed to a Tue and the Tue flight had more available seats than Wed. Needless to say, I kept the flights I had.

If you buy non-refundable tickets, the change fees can be crazy high. HA charges $30 within Hawaii, and UP TO $300 for all others between HI and mainland US. if you booked an Award ticket using FF miles, they'll charge you $50 PER SEGMENT if you make changes.
In addition to the change fee, they can also charge you additional fare if your original ticket price was less than the new one.

Even though I am a Pukalani Gold member onHA, Iwelcome SW to Hawaii. Hopefully they will reign in some of HA crazy fees and fares.
-
I fly HNL-Hilo at least 2-3x per month and direct into Kona maybe 4 times a year. West Coast/Vegas is often on Hawaiian, but many routes cross country may be with United as I have a lot of mileage there.
I did some quick searches and Hawaiian HNL to Kona looks like it has dropped price already. Hilo remains the same pricing, so waiting for a HNL - Hilo on SW. Pricing from HNL to OAK RT, in the heart of start of summer, after school gets out, shows a similar booking for Hawaiian @ $655 and SW @ $485.
I welcome the competition and I have no issue becoming a SW Airlines frequent flyer.
-
HA takes care of non-rev before revenue customers.
Not true! Not even close!
-
And now my HA friends are like "u get what u pay for". As long as the plane no crash, saving a few hundred per ticket is acceptable.
Seems like HA is doing an employee blitz campaign?

Yeah, I no need pay $200 more for a "hot" meal, which is just a warmed up sandwich. I bring my own food to eat any way. My daughter booked a rt flight HNL-KOA on SW in June for $100. Her flights on HA at the time of the booking would have been nearly double that. More than double if you add baggage fees.

Got to listen to some good tunes on the way home from Taiwan on China Airlines.
Queen, Sinatra, Cranberries, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross just to name a few and all free.
The hot meals were bbq pork and rice, teri pork and noodles, egg/ham/potato, pesto and chicken. All included and a bin of sealed headsets to use. Grab if need.
HA went from free meals to free sandwitch to free nada.

yeah what did happen with the in-fright meals? We used to get actual food and now its a crappy medium cold croissanwich thingy for breakfast flights or nothing overnight. Haven't done afternoon or evening so don't know what they get there.

I flew HA in December and now all movies and shows cost money.
I noticed that in an entire airplane from San Diego, only a few people were watching movies on the screens. They only seem to work half the time anyways.

So Trump in nam and they buy 737s from Boeing (billion dollar deal).

Interesting that the article mentions that the Max 8s weren’t planned for the Hawaii routes. SE reportedly has the most Max 8s in their fleet than any other US carrier. Gotta have an impact to them either way.
Also interesting the commentary on the new terminal being stunning. Arrived on Alaska yesterday and that terminal is super run down. At least very much so compared to many mainland terminals. Even older ones like SeaTac have been renovated nicely.

Does Hawaiian air have a play in the terminal?
