I can't find a news article with more details about this part of the investigation but on HNN Sunrise Steve Uyehara just said one of the people in the truck was detained on an ammunition charge.  What could that charge be?  Are there transport rules for ammunition?  Or felon in possession of ammunition is prohibited?

I've never really thought about driving with just ammunition.  I've gotten a ziploc bag of extra from friends and just driven home with the bag on the front passenger seat.  Bought boxes of stuff before and same just drove home with it in a plastic bag on the seat.  Sold some before and took it to work, left it in my trunk, then drove to meet the buyer.

Hawaii considers ammunition the same as a firearm.  Yes it is stupid but what do you expect from our lawmakers.
Buying ammo and taking it straight home should not be a problem if you got stopped along the way.

Average life expectancy here in the US is ~78. So middle age is around 39. You are on the far side of middle age. Feel old yet?  :P :P :P

it's an add-on charge
places to keep and carry applies to firearms and ammunition
basically, you are not likely to get busted for just ammo, but if used in a crime, they can add it on

The ammo issue in the law is (supposedly) based on the assumption that if you have ammo, you very likely have the device to use it, too.  So, if they can't find the gun, they'll still get you for the ammo if they find that instead.

A resident of Washington, DC, was arrested and faced 2 years in prison for having a single live shotgun shell which was a dud that failed to fire and a single spent .270 cartridge (empty brass) which were found during a raid of his home to look for illegal firearms.

The search was in response to a complaint from his estranged ex-wife. The evidence presented against Witaschek included a
12-gauge shell that failed to fire while Witaschek was hunting years ago, a spent .270 Winchester shell casing, and a box of
.45 caliber Knight muzzleloader bullets with plastic sabots. The muzzleloader bullets were for use in only antique or replica firearms.

Maybe Red Flag laws can help?

Quote
On Friday, just two days after his conviction of attempted possession of unlawful ammunition, Mark Witaschek went to a Washington,
D.C., police station to register in the city's Gun Offenders Registry. The act was part of a sentence meted out after Witaschek lost his
two-year legal battle that began when police searched his home and found an inert shotgun shell, a spent shell casing and a box of
muzzle-loader bullets.

Hawaii law makers see this as a challenge, not an infringement.

"gun offenders registry"?

"gun offenders registry"?

I imagine that's one way they track the people for whom they can deny gun permits, since NICS isn't always tracking violations of state/district laws.

"gun offenders registry"?

Well I think anyone who offends guns should be on a registry. I mean really, what can they do all by themselves to offend anyone?

This was targeted. Obviously these guys or one of these guys did something that someone didnt like.  Couple of days before this shooting there was a armed robbery at one of the game rooms in Waianae.  Think its connected?

Add on charge, or a rookie cop gets excited and bust you anyways for having a box of ammo.

This is why i have not bought ammo a few times, because i wasnt going straight home.
