Title: HURRICANE DOUGLAS IS COMING, R U READY?
Post by: RSN172 on July 22, 2020, 04:55:12 PM
I have two generators, a loud 4500 watt and the quiet Honda EU3000.  Got 15 gal of gas for it, five 20 lb propane tanks full, vehicles all full, at least 30 days of food and plenty of water.  Also got a good supply of building materials to make waterproof emergency shelter if needed.  Tomorrow I am going to buy extra food for the chickens and dogs.  Other than that, pretty much set. I made a couple of generator wall outlets so I can run power inside the house without having to leave a window or door jar for the cord.  My biggest concern is my new vegetable garden getting destroyed.

Very impressed with your preparations.  Me, the usual.  Kinda unprepared.  We could use more canned goods.

But yeah, I'm worried about my new garden also.  I started it out of boredom with this virus crap.  But on the positive side, because I have poor soil, 99% of the garden is in containers.

I plan to store all my plants in my enclosed garage.  Only my squash plant and my bush beans will have to weather the storm if it comes.  The rest can be moved.

I told my wife she has to leave her car outside so I can have room for my plants.  She gave me the evil eye. ;D

Condo life here. So no plants or generator allowed.  Got lots of water and will fill pots and pans if it gets closer.  Got food from Corona, canned, MRE, and feeze dried.  Got a portable gas stove that I can walk down to an open area to boil water for the freeze dried food.  But it's a long flight down.  Windows don't open enough to have a good ventilation for the stove.

No problem.  If it gets that bad that you need to use a camp stove, you won't have windows to worry about.   :geekdanc:

Why do you have to go outside to run a gas stove to boil water?   ???

Stuff like frying in oil and stuff with lots of smoke, I can see.  Do you not cook regularly in your condo?

The only "prep" I will need to do is fill a couple of water bladders ahead of heavy weather.

I've seen people who were such bad cooks they burned water.

My ex thought the smoke detector in the kitchen was a cooking timer.   :shake:

Nice.  How many watts of power do you get out of it, in other words what size generator would be the equivalent?

I completed the last remaining thing I had to do, which was put away all the empty pots and other items that could get blown away.  I also have a stack of  forty used but still very serviceable 12 ft x 39 inch corrugated metal roof panels that I weighted down with about 500 lbs of CMU blocks.  Hope that is enough.

Its a portable propane stove. Instructions on bottles say do not use in enclosed area.

Uh, you can always open a window. If you’re really worried, run a fan to help with air flow. You don’t need the windows open for a full jet stream...

11PM update from the NWS shows track shifted N and where I live on the BI is now outside of the cone of uncertainty.  Current track shows eye running directly over Oahu and Maui.  Still over a thousand miles away so let's hope it tracks further N and misses the entire state.  S of the eye is the weaker side of the storm.

Same here
I have about six months of food
on hand, virtually unlimited gravity fed water,
Cesspools for sewage,
Plywood for some of the windows,
about two weeks of generator run time,
with fuel on hand, and 10.6 kW worth of
solar panels I can rig up
quickly if I had to.
My internet and TV are satellite.
I do have a telephone land line, but hardly ever
use it. In other words I'm prepped for SHTF
to the tune of many, many thousands of dollars.
which means I won't get hit.

The "Fates" do that just to piss me off for spending
all that money seemingly for nothing.

But that is what you need to do to live on the BI.
prepare, prepare, and prepare.

Ran the EU2000 generator for a while and picked up 10 gal of ethanol free gas.   Water good to go, have a purifier to use pool water if I had to.  Local GS had ammo back in stock so I picked up a bit, just for drill.

Glad we sold the boat, do not have to worry about damage to the cover or anything while at the storage yard.

Will be interesting, last few storms we hardly got any wind or rain here.

Cost is TOO much.
I have priced out LiFePO4 batteries.
The biggest problem with these new batteries is the requirement
for a built in Battery Manager computer

13.7 kWh isn't much power.
That is basically two and a half hours of my
generator runtime at full load.

Oh CRAP  :shake:
I've been using LP gas stove, dryer and water heater for 14 yrs now, I must be FUBAR.

I think the main reason they put those notices up is so you do not have a propane container in the house.

Look like BI going dodge da bullet.  Oahu still get chance of direct hit, Kauai more so.

As far as aux power goes, I would eventually like to get one of those Honda EU7000 genset and get it to run on propane and gas.

#1 never count chickens until they hatch out and then
you may end up with more roosters than hens.
It hasn't missed us yet!
I'd check on getting a Northern lights Boat gen set in Diesel.
It might be cheaper and more robust.
I have a 1985 Honda generator that died due to Democrat
Fuel and I cannot get parts to fix it.
Northern lights will make parts for you to fix their stuff.
If I get off my butt I'll  be all solar, Forklift batteries,
and no longer worry about fuel or noise.
Stay well and be careful everybody!

At this point in time, there is no way the eye can make a sharp turn S to hit the BI.  I feel so confident I did not even build the wind screen I was planning to make this morning to protect my 3 zucchini plants.

For your sake, I hope your right.
All (well most) forecast's say it will remain heading nnw but remember 1992 when Iniki didi a 90 degree turn north directly over Kauai.

I well remember Iniki.  I was living below Punchbowl at the time and a trash can I had in the yard quarter filled with green waste did not even fall over nor the lid on it fly off.  Where my house was was like an air pocket protected from strong winds.  Half mile away, two houses had their roof come off.  My house was just a Hicks Home built in 1970, so no such thing as double wall or hurricane clips.  Iniki ran into a strong steering wind that pushed in directly N.  No such conditions exist right now and the winds pushing it will continue to push it in a westerly direction. I have a wind gauge that records, so I will see what kind of wind speed I get here in the forest.

Spent all day in maintenance mode, moving stuff out of the way in case the storm drain backs up. Gotta fill the cars with gas in the am and grab some more Goya in case the power goes out for an extended period. There might also be a window for a surf session, but getting to the ocean could be tricky with police locking everything down,

As of 0600 today, my LaCrosse weather station shows 0.00 rain in past 24 hours and highest wind speed was 6 mph.  Currently reading 1 mph. NWS 0500 report said BI in the clear.  Oahu and Kauai especially going to get some really rough weather.  Go get your extra beer and poke early.  A lot of stores may close by 1200 today.

Pretty good surf for a short window, but holy hell where did all the tourists come from? This guy came up to me at the shower and was asking when the hurricane was going to get here and I told him the good news. He was really disappointed that there was no devastation for him to film with the digital camera dangling on his wrist by the strap. I got a second look and then it hit me. This guy is not from around here. Then I looked around and a sizable portion of beachgoers were obviously people from somewhere else. On the lookout over Makapuʻu it was even worse. Most of them were tourists and not really sure what they were looking at. No wonder the Kung Flu cases are spiking. I guess we cannot hide forever when it comes to building herd immunity, but the "f--- the locals, I want a cheap vacation" attitude as well as the states inability to take its own regulations seriously are very disturbing. We are sending the message to everyone that breaking the law in Hawaii is cool and there are no consequences.

Bad time to be buying a generator, in the beginning of the hurricane season, on the BI.

I moved to Hawaii in 1993 just after Iniki came through.  There hasn't been a major hurricane impact on  the islands since I arrived.

The day that I declare "F*#k it" and don't do any preparations is the day the Hurricane will hit.

Of course I am happy that it didn't make landfall, just like the other million or so that came close.

What I can't get over is the constant hype and bs that the news people broadcast and how they speculate the what ifs as if they were covering a sporting event like the superbowl or something.

I get tired of the sensationalism.  But I think it's a liability thing.  It's better to be wrong than to say all clear and the damn thing hits.

I tell myself I'll never jump the gun again, no matter how they say it will hit and we need to prepare.

But I end up doing it, and then I get angry because all my preps were for nothing.  I think I'm stupid for thinking like that but I do.  I should be grateful but right now I'm kinda pissed.  Not because the hurricane didn't hit but because of all the un-doing I gotta do.

Yet everytime one comes close I get the preparations out.

Yet everytime one comes close I get the preparations out.

I went to Costco in Waipio on Saturday.  I was shocked at how NOT BUSY they were.  The parking lots were only about half full, and no problems doing the "Social Distance Dance" between isles.

They were out of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, SPAM and Sapporo Ramen Noodles, but otherwise well stocked.  Checkout was also not crowded.

I guess all the Pandemic Prepping means everyone already has a stockpile of necessities.

It might also have something to do with Costco's new rules on returning things like cases of water and toilet paper.  People can't hoard and return it when the storm passes.   :geekdanc:

I spent most of yesterday either recovering from a full day on the range and "debrief" that followed, and then onto work.  I had updates here and there.  In the 0800-1100 window, it seemed like things were getting serious.  Kept waiting for the skies to darken and winds to start picking up, but thankfully never materialized where I live.

Dodged a bullet overall for Oahu.  Saw some video and pics of decent amount of damage on Maui and Molokai though.  Hope those folks affected recover quickly.

Well, I didn't waste my time building a wind screen for my zucchini plants after I saw the 2300 update Friday night.  Glad I didn't because it would be sort of in the way and I would have to take it down.

I moved to Hawaii in 1993 just after Iniki came through.  There hasn't been a major hurricane impact on  the islands since I arrived.
CORRELATION

I moved to Hawaii in "86" and did not prep for Iniki which did impact the islands.
But I prepped for every hurricane approaching since then and no major impact on the islands.

You'll just spend your tips on more unnecessary prepping.

Just stop...  I purposefully did NOT wash and wax my car Saturday.   You can all thank me next time you see me.    You're welcome.

Me too.  I purposely left dried bird $hit on my wind shield from last week.  That force of nature steered the storm away.   ;D
