I’m cool with many of the boomers on this board. They can take a joke and trade barbs without being all insulted.
Right Inspector? ???

Personally after seeing the increasing amount of evidence that says hitting kids can cause lasting damage I have grown increasingly against it. I am not totally against it but I think that its use should be moderated. I think that we should not spank children out of anger because it seems that they may associate hitting as being when you are angry. It can be hard to do sometimes but I try to keep any hitting as strictly a consequence of the action and not something related to any emotion I may feel. My kids are both close to ten years old now and I rarely have cause to spank them anymore.
I was spanked as a child though not excessively so I can't really attest to being excessively spanked or not spanked at all.

In all fairness your post didn't indicate you wanted light hearted talk but if that is your desire then I shall abide.
My parents hit me occasionally and I feel I turned out well adjusted.

Well, I’m sure we can arrange for a “correction day” to smack you around for a while. ;D

I bet pretty much every boomer still remembers their home telephone number when they were a kid 50+ years ago. I still remember most of my friend's phone numbers from when I was a kid.

All good. Just many other more serious threads, arguing, etc. And yeah, I kinda meant to open a can of worms with the boomers and boomer+’es. Haha

I still remember the number of the house I grew up in. Some numbers of good friends and family. Many still have the same number.
Now? I can’t tell you the cell numbers of even my best friends. My sister is about the only cell I have memorized.

I made the cutoff for Boomer status -- Dec 1961 (Boomers from what I see is 1946 to 1964).
Home phone: 704-782-9790
When I first had to dial the number, it was printed on the dial as "ST 6-9790", which was pronounced "State-6" for the prefix. The numbers 7 & 8 corresponded to the letters on the dial S & T. That's how everyone remembered their numbers -- a word at the beginning to make memorizing easier. It was years before we had to use an area code for long distance in-state calls. That's because we didn't have enough phones in the state to require more than one area code.
I found an old phone book for my town online. All the numbers are 5 digits. Just have to dial "ST" (78) before each one.
I remember having that number from age 4 (old enough to know what a phone is) until I went to college at 18, and my mom still had it another 33 years until she moved in with my sister in 2013. I remember my mom refused to buy a touchtone phone -- our rotary was just fine. So, when I started working enough to pay for another line, I had another phone installed (same line/number) in my room and got a red "princess" style touchtone phone. I think it might have been the most stylish thing in our house at the time!
My mom kept that phone the whole time she was there. Never had a problem with it.
Losing that number was like losing our identity. :'(

We used that one until long after moving again until it broke, and we got a "fancy" one ...

And then the princess phone I posted already.
Our phone needs were very basic. Biggest issue was always my mom talking for hours on the "divorce' grapevine". One line, lots of waiting ...

I vaguely recall the letters on the phone at my grandparents house.
My grandma actually embraced email when it came along. My aunt (her younger sister) refuses. I have to write and send her cards, which is cool. Which reminds me, I should send her a card soon.

I used to get so bent out of shape when I tried to speed dial a phone number on the rotary phone. I would short dial the 5th or 6th number and have to start all over again.
Naturally I would try to go faster because of the "lost time" and then I would short dial the 3rd or 4th number or worse, the last number.
I used to get so angry I would jump up and down 20 times then fall flat on my ass and cry like a girl.
Oh and yes, my parents used to hit me until I saw mynah birds flying around my head, cawing like crows and I would dreamily try to grab them out of the air........

G-ma's phone number was only 5 digits
Omaha (6) 2436
Spent all of my summers there till my teens.
After the 3 hr drive home, we would call her collect and ask for ourselves.
That way she knew we got home safe and were not charged for the long distance call. :geekdanc:
As for corporal punishment, the nuns would whoop us with that darn yardstick, at least until you were big enough to slough it off or take it away.
I once was "reprimanded" by my mother for wrong doing.
I went and told G-ma and she smacked me again ! :shake:

That collect call to yourself thing was used all the time.
I once called collect to myself to let my mom know I arrived at college safely (5 hr trip).
The operator said she had a person-to-person call for [my name].
My mom said he's not here.
I said, "Thank you, operator."
The operator replied, "You're welcome, [my name]."

At my first office job in the Air Force, we used rotary phones ... the multiline version with a line of push buttons at the bottom for "Hold", each of the office numbers, and an intercom line.
A good number of people in my building played racquetball everyday at lunch, since we had a small gym directly in front of our building. To reserve a court, everyone would start dialing at 2PM. If you didn't get through by 2:10, the reservations were probably all filled. There were 4 courts -- 2 double and 2 single -- and the only lunch slots were 11:00 and 12:00.
Anyway, using a rotary phone to redial over and over SUCKED!! You knew if you didn't dial carefully, you'd miss that last digit and have to start over. But, you also had to dial super fast.
All work stopped at 2PM so 30 people could try to reserve courts.
Fun times!

grew up on Maui
Phone?
We had a rotary phone party line and the number was 338931.
I dumped the land line here about 4 or 5 years ago because all I got was junk calls.
Internet?
I still have a modem that I used to get on the internet/email on compuserve
Guns?
I learned to shoot off the front porch of grandfathers general store.
Dad bought me my first gun (pump shotgun) from a sporting goods store for $125...no permit.

As far as wacking the kids, I only recall my dad wacking me once when I was a kid.
So I wacked my kids once or maybe twice each as they grew up. It was enough to get the message across that dad wasn't messing around.
They all seem to be doing fine. I think 1 or 2 wacks from the parents before the age of 12 should be mandatory.
When they get to be teens it doesn't really work.

Another generational difference I notice is how people meet up. Now, it's typically texts or group texts. Then when you meet up, often needing to change plans on the fly. First group can head to the next spot and text/call those that haven't arrived. I think for HS and college, no cell phone then, I think we typically grouped up prior to heading out to the venue.

When I was young, we had 4 TV stations: ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS which was hit or miss when tuning.
We had to plan our lives around the TV Guide schedules if we wanted to see something specific on TV. Popular programs were scheduled in specific time slots to compete with other stations if TV execs believed that show could bring in higher ratings.
Now, we have infinite channels, subscription services and Internet content to entertain us. Even without cable, I get more TV than I can ever watch. And with DVRs, On Demand, and websites, including YouTube, missing a program seldom means you can't watch it later.

Yup. TV guide! That's right. I recall the national one available at the supermarket checkout was often wrong. Needed the one that came with the Sunday paper.
Now, I have DVR at home. When I go to friends or family house without, I'm like, "hey I missed that, rewind it". If they don't have DVR, then :(

Discipline for naughty children is not the same as "hitting your children", there is a sharp distinction.
I'll just leave it at that..

When I was a boy, I could play anywhere in my neighborhood as long as I watched for cars, didn't bother anyone, didn't damage anyone's yard or stuff, and came home before dark.
Now, parents are being reported to child protective services for letting their children play in their own front yard. The mother was watching the child from the kitchen window as she did the dishes.
Mom questioned over son's solo outdoor playtime
A Texas mom started a parenting debate this month, blogging about her six-year-old
playing outside by himself.
She described her shock and anger when police and Child Protective Services came
knocking on her door, CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports.
Kari Anne Roy knows all about the joys and challenges of raising a child. She has three
of them. Her youngest -- six-year-old Isaac -- recently gained the privilege of playing
outside alone for a few minutes.
Isaac said his rules were laid out for him: don't go past "the top of the hill where the stop
sign is."
But a seemingly well-intentioned neighbor brought Isaac back home one day.
"There was this kind of disconnect there that I was smiling and saying, 'yes he was
outside playing' and she was like, 'well, he was outside by himself' and I said, 'yes
he was outside by himself playing, as six-year-olds do,'" Roy said.
But it didn't end there. Soon, Roy had another knock on the door: a police officer
who questioned her, but left. A few days later, Child Protective Services (CPS)
arrived and questioned each of her children.

No adult could catch me age five and beyond.
I would never ever allow a strange adult to control me.
Perhaps Isaac is an idiot?
I was taught a healthy dis-trust of any and all strangers.
especially cops.
Probably saved me a lot of sorrow.

If it was a neighbor, the kid may have known them. Otherwise, the mom needs to teach to kid to yell and point, "STRANGER!! STRANGER!!" If they grab your hand, biting is a reasonable next step.
Nowadays, families are expected to provide digital entertainment for all, so there's no reason to let kids out to play. That's where the pedos are watching for targets of opportunity, don't you know.
-
Yeah, funny how life as a kid changed so much over a few(?) ;) generations. Nowadays the kids only stay inside and play computer games. And gotta be the newest and most expensive. I admit I jealous with all the new gadgets that can entertain kids now.
When I was a kid whatever was on hand were our entertainment toys. Broken picket fence pieces can be shaped into a Roman sword, complete with handguard if you're lucky enough to find a short piece and a rusty nail to hammer with a rock into the longer stick. Then you steal (well, borrow actually) your neighbor's garbage can cover and that becomes your shield. You are now a member of the Roman Legions....
By the way, the garbage can covers are not like the ones we have today. These are actual garbage cans made of metal. The covers had a handle to open/close in the middle. Almost all the neighbors garbage cans were missing covers when the kids on the block decided to "go to war".
Quite a bit of picket fences were intentionally broken too.....
Playing marbles in the dirt with the neighbor kids.
Mountain ball with a discovered bust up tennis ball and mop handle.
Slipping our parents slippahs under our t-shirts to simulate shoulder pads so we would play tackle football. Some kids were fortunate enough to have the real pads and helmets. Show offs.....
But yeah. Running around the neighborhood was as normal as apple pie. When the sun started to set and dusk was upon us, one by one our mamas would come out the front porch and yell for us to come home. As we come running they would remind us to wash our feet. Our feet would be caked with the dirt and dust of our plantation community.

Growing up, couldn't wait to go outside an play. Usually started with one of my neighbors and then go to house of next friend and give the "can XXX come out and play". Well, not really, but close. Haha. Run around, wherever we could go and be back by sundown. When we all had bikes, our "range" got further. Good times. Learned pretty quick the consequences of not making it back home in time and no call.
I hang out with the kids of two of my best friends. Age ranges from 16 to around 10. They all play together. We've been making it a point to have them come outside and play. Started with buying them footballs and other stuff and having them play with us. That gets tired for me, but eh, it's fun. Now the older two are taking an interest in dirt bike riding and one of my friends is really into it. So a good mix.
Get outside and play! Love that.

only rule was to be back by dinnertime...

For us, was PC cue and Jellys or another comic book store. Summer school time, it depended which school hosted summer school. We had a bright idea one day to ride bikes from my friend's house in Aiea to Ala Moana. Eff me that was far!

Those were the $hit. The cables down the frame so that steering wheel could go all the way around. No matter as none of use could do those fancy tricks, but was still cool. Or those folding pegs on the front and back wheels.
My grandpa bought me my first bike from Eki Cyclery. I don't remember what happened to that bike.

In our NC town, we had a McLellan's Store 5c. Our area was too poor for a Five & Dime Store!
Early version of Walmart. We did all our school supplies shopping there most of my elementary school days. Bic Stick pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, ... all the normal stuff.
I remember 1st grade using those 1-inch diameter pencils and tablets that had rough paper with splinters still in it, and if you tried to erase a mistake, the paper ripped all the way across! The lines were the tall solid-dashed-solid pattern for practicing writing the alphabet and numbers.
The cool kids had plastic pencil boxes with sliding covers. I had to use an old cigar box. My grandmother worked at a bowling alley snack bar, so she would bring home the empty boxes for us to use for all kinds of storage.
Speaking of the bowling alley..........
Next post! :geekdanc:
-
Frye's Lake Lanes bowling alley was/is still on a large area of land. It changed many times over the years, but they always kept the bowling alley.
The main building had 10 lanes for a long time, then added 6 more after they got rid of the slot car racing. There were 2 rooms on that side of the building -- a really large one with a huge raised table slot car track. Next to that was a daycare for the customers to use while they bowled, raced slots, or whatever. The daycare used to be slots, too, but they made it a daycare after the slot car interest started to drop.
The opposite side of the lanes was a Roller Rink. Kind of smallish for a rink, but it was enough until it wasn't. Then they built a new rink in a separate building. I spent so many Saturdays there! My mom could drop my brother and me off before the rink opened, We'd skate until we were bored or the rink closed, then walk to the bowling alley and bowl until my mom picked us up. If the owner wasn't around, the manager would only charge us for one or two games after bowling as many as 10 sometimes.
We'd eat at the snack bar, and we'd hang out and stay out of trouble --- mostly. My sister was the youngest, so if she stayed, we'd go bug her in the daycare.
The place was called Lake Lanes because Mr. Frye built a huge lake between the bowling and the roller rink. It was really nice. Concessions, slides, all kinds of playground type platforms to jump from, ... Almost like being at the beach, only with more stuff. Behind the bowling building was a set of train tracks. They ran an old timey locomotive with open seat cars. They had a few animals in pens to stare at as the train went around. The whole ride went through a wooded area, so it was pretty cool.
After the mid 60s, my mom took us to the lake and said it would be the last time. She told us the lake was closing the following week. This was right after the civil rights marches (riots in some areas). I remember some tense nights when there was talk of potential violence in our town, but I can't remember anything ever happening. Turns out, Mr. Frye was a bit of a racist. This was North Carolina, so not unheard of. He learned the new laws would make him allow "negroes" (the accepted term at the time) to use his lake. He said he'd never let "them" swim in his lake, so he closed it. My mom said he had some idea that they would make it harder to keep the lake clean. I was young and never quite understood what was going on. It was all "grown up talk" to me.
I saw Mr. Frye in person a few times. Never really liked him. Something about him was scary to me as a little kid. The manager of the bowling alley was Coy Drye. Very nice man -- almost a father figure since we were there so much. Always looked out for my brother and me when my grandmother was busy serving snack bar customers.
It's amazing how much time we spent on that property. So much to do. So many changes. I pretty much grew up there.
I don't see that kind of amusement property much anymore. Wet'nWild is close, but it's so expensive. Plus, I'm not sure I'd leave 3rd or 4th graders there on their own.

Ooh. Who remembers Castle Park?
;D

Me...... :(

Me...... :(
I went there only a handful of times before they closed. Remember their waffle cone ice cream was awesome.
-
yup, we used to play tag and hide and seek and skyeening (one word)
only rule was to be back by dinner time..
Classic, skyeening started as sky inning (in Haole), it got East side and turned into skyeening, got to Windward side and was sky heenie.
Yup, back before the street lights came on was our neighborhoods rule.
What about Manapua Man going through every neighborhood.
Every body leaving their slippers outside the classroom at recess and running around bare foot.
So much Old School shenanigans and traditions would not be allowed or tolerated now days at all.
Can imagine your kid showing up at school telling the boys “Let’s play smear the queer”
No red rover or shambattle allowed in school any more.
No swings at the park or seesaws or even real monkey bars and real high slides.
-

Is that the one where you put the stick on the ground, then someone rolls the ball to hit the stick and then you have to catch the ball after the ball pops up in the air?
-
Yup.
Hitter throws it up and hits it.
Guy who gets the ball rolls it at the bat was is placed on the ground.
(There are actually more rules but that’s long story short)
-

Ya. Ok. I remember playing that. We lived on a perfect street for that game. Short side road, so not much traffic. Decent slope on a pretty straight road, so made it easier to roll the ball at the stick. Good times!
-
Yup.
Hitter throws it up and hits it.
Guy who gets the ball rolls it at the bat was is placed on the ground.
(There are actually more rules but that’s long story short)
hitter got to hit until someone caught a fly ball and became hitter
if it bounced, whoever caught it got to roll it towards the bat
if it hit, the batter had a chance to catch it on the bounce so he could remain hitter
if he didn't, then the roller guy got to become batter

Yes it was!
I put a sad face on my post because Castle Park was so long ago. I actually was going there for my kids when they were young. They loved that park. In other words I wasn't going there as a kid. More like a parent, which makes me feel more old and alone, lol!!
How about the Checkers and Pogo Sky Slide? Anybody remember that? I think it was in Waipahu by the Wigwam store.
I bet some (all?) of you are wondering "Wigwam?" WTF is that?!!

I see it as the continuing conversion of the public education system into a leftist political indoctrination organ. Just attending class is an achievement these days.
I have a good friend that home-schooled his kids, and they could not be more different than the high self-esteem drones public education cranks out.
His daughter recently graduated with a Masters in Mathematics. No "math is hard" from her.
Kids may be kids, but those having major influence over their behavior and viewpoints have been moving further to the left all the time. That is what is changing, IMO.

I said I wanted to keep this thread light hearted. But I’ll add here that I still believe it’s on parents, as opposed to schooling. My buddies have teenagers who are going to public school. Yeah, I can see what is being mentioned, but my buddies sort of impose different after school and sports. One of the older is quite good as sports and it stung when his team lost in states semifinal last year. It crushed him for a day, but then he was wanting to train for the next season shortly there after.
However, while parents are a big influence, so are friends. Anyways, not a parent, so just what I see.

Fun fact.....
My oldest sister at the beginning of the film became owner of the now-defunct Ashley Furniture store that was in Waikele.
It couldn't survive the market fall of 2008.

Today I took my new for me 80 year old Hi-Standard to the range to shoot it for the first time. It took about 20-30 rounds for it to smooth out and run reliably. And accurate as could be. A walk back thru history with this one. I put about 200 rounds thru it. I think I have a new favorite pistol. After I cleaned it I ran about 300 rounds of my newly powder coated boolits thru the sizer. I prepared my next mold for casting boolits for my Romanian Tokarev tomorrow. I had a lot of emails and texts I had to reply to for my business. And now I am waiting for my home inspector to call to go over the inspection on a home I am buying. And in between I am insulting the Millennial Twit. Been a pretty full day for me.

No, I’m doing a 1031 Exchange. Selling my rental house in Peoria and buying one in Queen Creek. The house I am selling I have owned for 15 years. Normally I keep them around 18 years before I do an exchange but this home has been not made as much money for me as I would have liked. Since the market in Phoenix is so hot right now I figure I’ll take advantage of it now and do the exchange while the market is hot.

Turns out there is a long list of items to be fixed by the owner. I’m sure they’ll fix the stuff cuz we did an off market sale and I’m basically a cash buyer. They are kind of in a position created by themselves. So I think they’ll fix everything I am going to ask for. This is my first off market deal. I’ll get a higher monthly rent for the new place. And won’t pay any tax (it is deferred) on the sale of my present home due to the exchange.
Forgot to say I was told I’ll have at least one cash offer in hand by tomorrow. I’m hoping for at least 2. We’ll see.

I remember when Eki was across from HCC - now gone. I remember BikeFactory was on the parcel that Walmart on Keeaumoku is on now. BTW, I read that Wally Parcels passed away - he was nice guy.

I spent the entire year of 1976 on Guam( with a little TDY to the Philippines and Japan).
I don't think I ever saw a single TV show there but then again we didn't have power for like, two months
(super Typhoon Pamela).
Really old school stuff at the car dealer.

Yeah. Imports have so much preservatives. We drink Japanese and German beers produced in this countries, not the US versions and they are so much cleaner.
I’ve only tried San Mig when “in country” 🤔

Ranier, Black Label, and another brand I can't remember right now used to sell real cheap. I remember how the packaging looked like but the name escapes me. Something-light beer, lol! They would sell for like $2.99 a 12 pack of cans. When we were low on cash (which was often back then) we would pool our money and buy these cheap beer to drink and shoot the shit after work.
We also liked to buy baby millers and baby lowenbraus.

In the 60s, I played tennis. On Sunday the old guys would open up the clubhouse and fill the galvanized washtub with ice and Primo beer in the brown stubby bottles.
When I grew up, I discovered that a little beer (Michelob) actually made me play better.
I once went night firing with some sheriffs and we took beer and road flares.
If I recall correctly, I shot better after having a few. That was good times.

In the mid seventies I repaired a v8 mustang that belonged to one of the bosses of a local beer distributor. He paid me for the repairs and gave me 16 cases of various bud and michelob
products. I sold 5 cases and drank the rest with my pals. The beer did not last as long as I had hoped.

A while ago I found out that many local high schools have no auto shop classes. In contrast to this, in countries like Germany youth that show an aptitude toward a trade are given training starting in their early teens. By the time these young people are in their early twenties, they are master craftsmen or craftswomen in their particular trade. The country benefits by having skilled
people at a younger age and for more years than the US. I firmly believe that not all young people need or want a 4 year college degree in a field with an uncertain future.

Fishing in the Kapalama canal was fun too. But can’t believe people eat the fish and crab from there.

I bought my 10/22 at Woolworths Ala Moana in the late 70s. Honsport, Sears and JC Penneys all had a few guns for sale. I bought my first Buck 110 and sharpening stones at Penneys.

I remember Woolworths, Kramers, and some others.
When Don Quijote was Daiei and Holiday Mart. When Macy's was Liberty House.

Remembering the open highways of back when, going for top speed With a 1967 Triumph Bonneville on whatever road that was that turned into H1. Out by what would become Makakilo. Totally empty highway.
Dole pineapple tasting without a tour bus to be seen. Road through North Shore not a parking lot.
No hotels south of Waikiki.

It's been so long now, youngsters have no real memory of the Hawaii Raceway Park at Campbell Industrial Park. It closed in 2006 -- 14 years ago. In just two years, we will be seeing kids born into a time where that iconic facility did not exist at all.
Heck, we have 20-somethings now who only got their licenses 4-13 years ago. They've never been able to go to the park and experience what fossil fuels and adrenaline combined can really do! :geekdanc:

I remember that small theatre by Longs - I saw Beat Street there.
If I remember Dragon's Lair was a $1 or $5 to play a game? Fun Factory is still there.
Kenny's Burgerhouse where McDs is and the 50 cent teri burgers.

My grandma's house near Ritchie's on N. King St. We were there very often growing up. The old Helena's, where Honolulu Ford is now. We didn't roam the area that much when we were younger, but got to know the area pretty well as we got older. We used to get chinese food from Au's Garden pretty often. Jesse's Bakery was one place we went of often. Used to get that roll thing.

Which Longs? I vaguely recall a movie theater. I recall seeing a movie in the round theater on University St. I think it was an old school kung fu movie.

Wrasslin!
I still remember I had the Slurpee cups for Wrestle Mania I-III, with the characters on them. Ricky the Dragon Steamboat! I don't watch that stuff now, but I catch it from time to time when I was watching something before it. Some HS classmates still watch that stuff religiously and even go to events. :o

Not a gun smith so there's plenty of people who know more than me. Can't fix cars either. But I can shoot guns and drive a car so I'm happy.

Lead balances PH? We should open a business together selling lead soaked water to hipsters. I got plenty extra fishing lead. I hear PH balanced water is all the craze.

Remember local wrestling circuit.
There was a Samoan tag team. My friend's dad is Leroy Brown. He became campus security @ Farrington.
Somebody false cracked my friend once. His dad let them fight or made like he was letting them fight. He whacked his son with a PVC pipe he was holding.

The "best" one was paper towel for the insulation layer. But if you didn't time it right and lunch was early, sometimes had to unwrap and leave it out in the sun.
Now, can't even share snacks from home lunch. That was some of the best times.
