Like the title says. What .22 lr ammo have you tried? What are your faves?
I'm interested in .22 lr ammo for B/A rifles, but feel free to chime in for whatever your use/preference is.
So far I've only shot CCi Velocitor in my B/A 22.
I have Eley Match and Lapua Midas+ coming, hopefully any day now.
I have more Eley Match and some Eley Target on order. Prob coming end-Jan(ish).
Been trying to find SK Rifle match, but near impossible to find. Was debating on the SK High Velocity that I found in stock.
Been eyeing RWS, but that stuff is pricey! :o
-
Tried: RWS, Eley, SK, Wolf Match. CCI Std, Aguila Std, Remington from Sports Authority, Remington White Box.
The most accurate was SK but thats too expensive to shoot regularly. Shoot Aguila and CCI std. now along with SCATT

At prices now, at least what I’m finding avail/in stock, stuff like CCi same price or even more than some of the good/better Eley and SK ammo.
No ammo snob. But do want to shoot some better ammo in my B/A to see what’s up.

You’re well trained in scat

King of the Hill: Lapua X-Act (~$25 per box of 50rds)
1st Tier: Lapua Midas+, RWS R50, Eley Tenex EPS
2nd Tier: Lapua Center-X, RWS Rifle Match (yellow box), Eley Match EPS
3rd Tier: The others
There really isn't much of a difference between 1st Tier & 2nd Tier because they all come from the same factory and same machines (e.g., Lapua Midas+ & Center-X, RWS R50 & Rifle Match, Eley Tenex & Match). Only the lots are different. The lots that shoot better in the factory barrels are graded the higher tier.
The 22LR is a unique animal in that the particular brand and particular lot would shoot good in one rifle, but not in another rifle.
You just have to try. Thus, the neverending chase to find the "best ammo" for your rifle.............

Teichi,
Some of these boxes are collectors' items...... no joke.
Worth more for the box than the ammo itself............

How about RWS R100? Would that close some of that gap from Tier 1 to King of the Hill? Read some good things about that one. Probably will stick to Lapua Midas + as the "highest" I'll go for now. Maybe Eley Tenex.
Understand the "best ammo" for ones rifle part. I've seen some folks testing show Eley Match as one of the best, maybe depended on the lots. Don't foresee myself that deep down the rabbit hole any time soon. Certainly want to test various ammo in my CZ 457 in stock configuration and then see where the path takes me.
That said, I was also looking for "less than upper Tier" ammo to just grow with the .22 rifle in general.

I should post some of the ammo that my dad left me. There's some ammo in the can that probably are from when my dad was little.
-
Of course each individual rifle is going to like one type of ammo over another. With that said, generally speaking my most accurate rifles prefer CCI SV and SK Rifle Match. Also, Eley target works well also.
But when CCI SV has not been available I bought a case of Eley bulk pack for the CMP. Paid 7 cents a round and it shoots exactly like the CCI SV. I bought another case of it. I have not seen any since.

I had some CCi SV, but shot most of it with pistols
I have some Eley Target on order. ETA to Hawaii prob end of Jan. Will keep an eye out for SK Rifle match along the way. WTFShane has also offered to trade for some. The SK line overall really interests me, both for performance and the pricing. I mean similar to Eley as well. Just sucks on ammo availability here. Maybe I should move to my aunty's place in VA. Her 10 acres as plenty of opportunity for makeshift range.

If I can fly to AZ on Alaska, it's 50 lbs max. . . 8)
I remember doing the number on number of rounds to 11 lbs max, but that was for when I was flying with 9 mm and 5.56/.223. It wasn't much.
2 1/2 bricks of .22 would still help pad the stash. ;D

When my wife and I flew Hawaiian to the mainland I ordered 5 bricks of 22 to be delivered to my brother’s house. When we flew home 2 1/2 brinks went into each suitcase. It was only 2,500 rounds but it did help pad my dwindling supplies.

When I went to Cali in October, a buddy and I were going to try to find some gun shops to check out. I was going to look for ammo, but learned (or was reminded) about Cali's "Safety for All Act" where non-residents can't by ammo. Could've brought back quite a bit of ammo since we had 8 in our party. 88lbs of ammo, but no. . .

Just ordered an ammo support box for the Eley boxes.
Eley has a boxing system unlike the orthodox method.
It has been a pain to set up rounds individually.
I think Joe Ettershank (see Facebook) has the problem solved.

He also has other boxes for the orthodox ammo like Lapua, RWS, SK, etc.

Got some of my test ammo too. I’ll probably order more end of January. Just wondering if you see a big accuracy difference in
lot #s. This shortage sucks because you can’t really buy test lots…once you find one that shoots well the chances of it still being in stock is slim to none.
-
Heads up to check with Jen before you order. Last I spoke to her Jan shipment was going to be a “last then evaluate” situation. Where mid-Jan (fatter the holiday) would be “safe” cutoff date. If you heard otherwise recently, cool. Maybe we’ll get them to continue their awesome service.

Hi Inspector !
Price? I can't find the price anywhere, must be only advance advertising.
It was an announcement from the Shot Show for a new product (price not announced yet).
Don’t know about you but I get excited over new 22 ammo especially anything that makes the claims it does.
Sorry about that!

Are there any sites in particular you guys purchase your 22s from? I'm usually in the market for HV stuff since my GSG 1911 is very picky about ammo. Only mini mags have run well in it so far, although tbf I've only tried blazers and Aguila HV.

https://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr is a great tool. Lists a ton of stuff, with filter tools to see only what you want. Default sort is cost per round, bottom up.
Funny you should ask. I just started a thread in Classifieds to try and find partners to split cases of ammo: https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=44413.0

Quick update: Young Guns has some new 22 on the shelf.
CCI SV at $18/100 is pretty steep, but it's there.
CCI AR at $50/300 isn't cheap, but not terrible.
Sellier & Bellot "Club" at $6/50 is fair, I think. They'll sell you 5 boxes at a time. In my bolt action that shoots respectable.
Cheers.

Thanks for the update. Yeah, that seems pretty steep, but also seems like "going rate" now, and probably decent compared to not that long ago. :(

Just got word that the next ammo shipment from Kaleo is on the way. It may be a while until it reaches Hawaii, with mid to late Feb projected. But with the caution that with current shipping issues overall, likely on the longer end of the spectrum. I've had a bunch of packages delayed by a week or more. Not a big deal for me as I am currently swamped with other stuff, so the timing above works well.
I have more Eley Match on the way, with some Eley Target and RWS Rifle Match for .22, as well as some match 6.5 CM to feed the new centerfire rifle. :geekdanc:

Some insight on RWS rimfire ammo. (From Facebook "Precision Rimfire" blog)
"Lee Himelright
I just lot tested and bought some RWS100 from Annie NA. Talking them about ammo.
The Rifle Match is made on its own machine using the same components at the RWS50/100. Rifle Match and their cheaper stuff is cheaper because it ran/made faster.
They don’t sort by quality like Lapua. They spec check it but Rifle Match, no matter how good it test cannot become RWS50/100..
It’s just a really good batch of Rifle Match..
RWS50 and 100 is made on the same machine and a lot slower.. that is why, during times like these, you can usually find one or the other. Right now 100 is here, and it’s been here but it’s running out and the rws50 is due in soon."

Ahh, interesting. Looking forward to trying the different ammo. Did notice what you mentioned about the "waves" of RWS 50/100. Stayed away from that "tier" of ammo, at least for now.

Ammo prices going down slowly.
Bruno Shooters has Lapua Center-X for $1412 per case.
Creedmoorsports has it for $1385 per case.
Both available yesterday and this morning, so production is catching up to demand.
I check daily the several "good" websites for Lapua ammo, and is the first time it was available in about a year.........
It will not go as low as pre-hoarding COVID times at $1000 or $1100 per case, but should come down a little more.
-
Good to see the prices going down. I think I’ll buy buy the case lot and just hope it shoots in my gun. Went to the range on Sunday. It was windy…20mph but I could still group at 50yds. 100 yds was a different thing though. The wind changes made it difficult.

Akubone1,
"I think I'll buy the case lot and just hope it shoots in my gun......"
When you buy a case, you can make the rifle & ammo combination to shoot a little better with the use of a tuner like Harrell's tuner.
Basically it can reduce vertical stringing in shot groups, and thus reduce your group size a lot.
It's easier to tune a rifle and ammo if the ammo is in the "good and better" class to eliminate quality inconsistencies and flyers.
I usually tune my BR rifles with good quality 22LR of which I have at least a brick (500 rds.).
This way, at least the tuner settings will be at least consistent for 500 rds or 10 boxes of 22LR.
Better if I have 5000 rds. so that I can tune more than 1 BR rifle to the ammo.
As quirky as 22LR is, some of my BR rifles do not like a particular brand or particular lot of ammo, no matter if I put a tuner or not................. :'(
Anyway, if I had a case of good quality 22LR, I'm pretty sure I could make my rifles shoot it well with a tuner.

My new to me CZ 457 seems to like CCI SV (5 shots at 50 yards today, not too windy at Koko Head)

JC2721,
Your rifle must like CCI SV and you are a lucky guy for it.
Shoots real well, your rifle and ammo combination.
If you have any flyers with CCI SV, it is probably the ammo, and not the barrel or you; as CCI SV
is not categorized as target, premium ammo.
How were the other groups of 5 when you went shooting today?
Try another brand of ammo which is up one level to tighten your one-hole groups..................

What a treat. With some luck you'll find a few other similar cost ammo options your rifle shoots this well. CCI SV is plenty tight to go 200m (Big Bore lanes on Silhouette side) most days. This past Sunday was an exception. I'd call it a swirling mess: 3mil right to 1mil left of target minute to minute.
-
The CCI Velocitor shot pretty well in my stock CZ 457 AT-One. A buddy told me that particular ammo was middle of the road at best. At the prices I bought that locally, the match ammo I got through Kaleo Arms was cheaper for some of the ammo I have coming in.

What's the rest of the setup? Are you using a bipod for the muzzle end and a sandbag for the butt, or one of the fancier Caldwell or similar frames?
-
What's the rest of the setup? Are you using a bipod for the muzzle end and a sandbag for the butt, or one of the fancier Caldwell or similar frames?
This rifle came with a Leupold 4x M8 scope mounted in CZ rings. For bug-hole groups the 4x is difficult to use but with some luck it will get the job done.
I don't do much rifle shooting so I just use an old sock filled with rice and a scrounged leather sandbag for the rear.
The rifle did come with a Harris bipod but it really throws off the balance and look of the rifle (Schnabel fore end and Euro style cheek piece) so I took it off and don't use it.
That group was rounds #10-15 for the session, for the first 10 shots I got a couple of cloverleaf groups. Everything came together for that pictured group--the hard part was waiting for the line to be called and not putting any more holes in that target, lol.
The other groups I shot were pretty much clover leaves with some horizontal stringing so I quit trying to shoot more groups like that one and packed it up for the day
I have nearly a full case of the SV on hand (plastic boxes, not paper packed) so I'm good on ammo for a long time.
Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
-
That plastic boxed CCI SV was purchased shortly before the great ammo shortage of 2020-21, so I believe it's pretty consistent stuff. From what I've been reading, my guess is that the recent stuff is of a lesser quality.
-
Should have a new batch of ammo to test out this weekend. ;D

I got some Lapua Center X and RWS Rifle match coming. I found more Eley Match at Good Shooting yesterday so hopefully it goes on their next pallet leaving in a month or so. Still really haven’t seen SK around at decent prices.

Nice. Looks like many of us have lots of shooting to do.
I will have to check when the box comes in (scheduled for today) since it's been a while since I put in the order, but I recall my orders being heavy on Eley Match.
Yeah, I've been looking for SK Rifle Match (red box) all over. See some high velocity, pistol match, and some others, but haven't seen the Rifle Match. Besides Center X, the SK Rifle Match is the highest on my list to try.
I'm sure I'll enjoy what I have. Just sucks getting into this at the near the bottom of the 22 ammo pendulum swing.

Today was a great day to test 22LR ammo.
No wind until about 11:30am or so.
Tested my Lilja barrel with RWS Rifle Match, RWS R50, Lapua Midas+, and Eley Tenex.
My Benchmark barrel will be delivered Monday, so will test same ammo.
Got the Ballistic X software and need to watch youtube in how to use it to measure groups.
Tomorrow is predicted to be no wind also.
Good shooting !

Hi Akubone,
You shooting your CZ with the new Lilja barrel? Should shoot real good with good ammo since it has a match chamber.
The RWS Rifle Match, in classification and price, is a step below R50.
However, at Kokohead, it is really hard to tell which is which...........
I think the RM has 3 or 4 flyers when shooting a box of 50 that you know wasn't your fault.
When shooting 5-shot groups, most of the groups are similar to shooting R50.
(Akubone, we can trade for 1-2 boxes of R50 to try in your rifle if you like. LMK)
CenterX, like RWS RM, is similar in classification and price and a step below Midas+.
I think in this comparison, CenterX would be a little more uniform than RWS RM, at least in my rifles.
(I need to test CenterX more to form a better opinion.)
(If you like try 1-2 boxes of Midas+ LMK)
Eley Match (black box) is similar in classification and price and a step below Tenex.
I'm going to get a few boxes of Eley Match to see how it shoots.
(I don't have much experience with this EM.)
(If you like try Tenex LMK.)
This testing of ammo, every rifle is different and probably everything I said above may not be true in your rifle.......... ???
PS: LMK about how the 0.041" headspace shoots.
Curious on how to see your barrel shoots a tight headspace.
Spoke to Steve Boelter, and he's sending me a 0.041" and 0.040" gauge...
He says some match chamber/barrels shoot better at these specs......... (he told me to get 0.044, 0.043, and 0.042, but not 0.041 or 0.040)
-
.041 shot well. I didn’t shoot much at 50yds. With very little wind I wanted to stretch it out to 100. The RWS rifle match grouped well but I had 3-4 flyers with the box. Eley Match was also consistent. It’s hard to tell if .041 shot better than .042 since I didn’t shoot both headspace under the same condition/day.

Question
When testing ammo is it manufacturer vs manufacturer or manufacturer lot to lot?
-
Question
When testing ammo is it manufacturer vs manufacturer or manufacturer lot to lot?
For me…it’s mainly manufacturer vs manufacturer. However I did find that one particular lot of Eley Match shot better than the other two. I emailed my barrel manufacturer and Lilja said my chamber was cut for Eley. It seems like Eley match does shoot a little better than my Lapua Center X in my rifle.
-
Question
When testing ammo is it manufacturer vs manufacturer or manufacturer lot to lot?
Depends. Right now, I’m testing lot to lot, but that’s because I was able to get different lots of a given brand/line. Tough to find some types I want to try let alone multiple lots.
I did some testing between brands and will likely do so again in the future. That said, I will be getting a tuner soon for my rifle, which is supposed to be allow finding a setting to optimize a given lot of ammo.

Cool. I have more Eley Match on the way, but mostly looking forward to some match 6.5 that I’ve been waiting to test.

Tried to shoot and test the Lapua ammo this past weekend and two weekends ago.
Used a one-piece rest and front rest/rear bag on consecutive weekends.
X-Act pre-covid price about $25 per 50rd box; now $28-29
Midas+ pre-covid about $15, now $18
CenterX pre-covid about $11, now $14
My rifle, and I emphasize in my rifle as YMMV, with a new Benchmark barrel and a 22LR Nevius chamber specifically
cut for Lapua ammo, a few observations.
X-Act shot well, no flyers, but is it worth $28 per box? Hard question
Midas+ shot equally with X-Act, at a lower price.
CenterX almost as good as the 2 above, but there are flyers and slight deviation (larger groups) from the 2 above.
Pre-covid, CenterX was the ammo to go to, as it was $11 a box vs. $15 for Midas+.
While the prices just climbed about $3 more per box, the difference between CenterX at $14, and Midas+ at $18, doesn't seem to be that much of a price jump.
Again, in my rifle, the X-Act appears to be overrated in performance vs. price.
This was just a basic test and just one person's opinion.

Cool. I still have quite a bit of Midas + to try/test. Eley Match is my current go-to, but mostly because that's what I have the most of and have tested with good results.
Just checked a couple of the online vendors that I've been buying from and Center-X and SK Rifle Match are in stock. I am tempted to order, but then probably will be waiting for a while for the next Kaleo shipment.
-
When testing ammo are you shooting over chronograph to see if velocity variations are the effect of the flier?
-
My 5-brick, same lot of Midas+ deserves tweaking with a Harrell tuner, without and with my extension tube.
Funny, but while the chamber is reamed for Lapua bullet RN configuration, Eley Tenex with the flat-nose EPS bullet shoots well.
Also have about 5 bricks, same lot of Tenex, so worthwhile to tweak with the Harrell.
Or, maybe tweak with a BeeSting tuner/tube............ possibilities are endless.... have to go Kokohead forever.

Got six more bricks of various match ammo through Kaleo the other day. Decided to just shoot CCI SV and Norma Tac 22 instead of the match ammo yesterday due to the swirling winds. My Lilja barrel does not like the Norma…1 1/2 inch groups at 50yds. The CCI had a hard time chambering but shot better. Nothing like shooting Center X or Eley Match…I guess you gotta pay to play.😜

I hit the range on Sat (late morning) and it was quite breezy. I ended up shooting more test loads for my 6.5, so didn't really mind.
Six bricks? Wow! Seems like you're well set for a bunch of range time!
I just got in another 1k of Eley match on the latest shipment. Still need to test some Lapua and RWS ammo that I have on hand, but mostly have gone with Eley Match. I would still want to test all sorts of ammo, but with .22 lr ammo supply still not great, want to focus on what has shown as decent results so far.

goodshootinginc had Lapua X-Act for $258 a brick, ordered 2 bricks.
Price was the best and unchanged from pre-COVID prices.

Goodshootininc has some great pricing on 22 match ammo. Unfortunately they sell out fast. I just was lucky and ordered 5 bricks of Lapua CenterX. Was $121.50/brick. Need to check daily…hopefully supply gets better.

Yeah, me too. I've been checking regularly for CenterX and Midas+ as it is hard to find at "almost pre-COVID" prices.
goodshootinginc seems to one of those places that did not raise their prices to gouge customers.

Nice. I checked it out and I was tempted. I recall that site from Inspector's recommendations. Will have to remember to check back with them here and there. For now, I have quite a bit of Eley Match with various lots that I picked up 500-1k here and there, so I am thinking of sticking with that for a while. However, seeing you folks trying/testing stuff like Tenex and X-Act is awesome! As well as tempting.

I've been checking Creedmoor and a couple of other sites here and there. Seems like a decent rotation of availability. Seems like things are improving and like you said, hopefully supply will get better. We'll be keeping Kaleo busy ;D

Sucks that it’s so windy. I’m not wasting match ammo on 20-30 mph gusts. 10-15 is manageable for me but when you have winds above 20mph that’s tough for rimfire. I ended up shooting pistol Sun & Mon.

Just picked up my load from Jennifer/Kaleoarms:
2 bricks of Lapua X-Act
4 bricks of Norma TAC-22 ($258 a brick to $43 a brick............talk about high and low)
Note that Lapua has completely changed the packaging of all their product lines from about a year ago

Now if the wind could die down a bit. Got 5 bricks of Lapua CenterX that just arrived and another 5 bricks of Sk rifle match shipping in the next pallet. Hopefully my new rifle build will be ready next month just in time for ammo testing.

Amen :worship: Waiting for no wind day, but not holding my breath.
I just had to get more X-Act, against my better judgement, though........... I really need to test the old bricks against the new bricks and find out if there is really a difference between these Lapua brands due to the prices.
-
Good question because I’ve got a Glock 44 coming next month or so, so I wanna know what I should shoot through it for range/ target and if I ever feel like carrying it over my 22 or 17, I’d wanna know what is good here for carry ammo in .22
All I have experience with is normal LR, CCI subsonic, and mini mags, and some unknown LR my uncle gave me with my first .22 when I was like 17

I hear ya. I was thinking of heading to the range this past Sunday. Initial plan was to shoot the new 6.5, but didn't have a chance to load up some rounds. I have lots of Eley match to shoot, but then I saw the wind howling and figured not a good time to do tests to refine the tuner setting.
What rifle build again? Sorry, I know you mentioned, but forgot. Been thinking of a Vudoo or Rimx, but that's likely quite far off.

We're heading into August soon, so I bet there are lots of no tradewind days coming.
More ammo is always good judgement! ;D

For semi-auto pistols, CCi mini-mags is my gold standard, as well as many others. Might be tough to find right now, but lots of CCi to choose from that work well as well. If you want to venture into higher grade/priced ammo, there are lot of pistol match ammo. SK comes to mind.
As for options for carrying a .22 lr pistol, that's a totally different discussion. . . this one was mostly geared toward .22 lr for rifles, but certainly don't discriminate to pistol shooters

Registered the Vudoo today but still waiting on some components to finish. Should be ready to shoot mid August. I’ll shoot the CZ in the meantime.

Awesome! What chassis? Or that's part of the "still waiting"?
I am debating on swapping out the stock on my CZ457 AT-One, or just sticking with it.

It’s in a MPA matrix chassis. 22” MTU barrel with trigger tech diamond single stage. Deciding on the Spur mount or American rifle company mbrace. Accu tac bipod just arrived.

Out-STANDING? We have very similar tastes in guns!
I have two MPA chassis. One BA Comp and another BA Comp ESR. I haven't shot the Matrix, but a 2a poster has one. Both my .308 and 6.5 CMs are M24, but that's because the MTU Bartleins were longer wait time. I went with TT Diamond two-stage. If you are in need of a TT Diamond single stage, LMK. I have one that I'm not using.
My .308 and 6.5 have Spuhr mounts. I have another 6.5 that currently has "placeholder" scope with ARC M-brace rings, but when I get the real scope, I'm leaning heavily toward the ARC M-brace mount. I really like the Spuhr mounts, but kind of wanting to try something different. Bipods, I went with Atlas and TBAC bipods.
Now that my centerfire are setup that way, the .22 lr is feeling neglected. haha

Vudoo 360. Apparition in the MPA Matrix Chassis. I wanted it because of the various grip and thump shelf sizing. Boy it’s heavy though.

For range/target, I would shoot CCI SV 40gr LRN which I have a lot of. The CCI SV 40gr, I believe, is the test round for the SW Model 41 Target Pistol at SW factory.
I have shot premium-priced 22LRs in my M41 on a solid pistol V-rest and it shoots real good, but I can't off-hand shoot well enough to tell between CCI and real good ammo.
For carry, I'd carry my P365, small 9mm, as the Glock 44 is the same size.

Bullet Central has SK Rifle Match back in stock.
Debating if I should order some. Like 10-20 boxes. I have plenty of Eley Match to keep me busy for a while.
