Title: Lahaina Burning
Post by: hvybarrels on August 09, 2023, 02:05:43 AM
Just checked the news and shocked to see the images and hear some stories about people running for their lives. It reminds me of California where the Santa Ana winds would randomly stoke a blaze and wipe a town off the map.

El Niño is supposed to mean a super dry winter this year. Firestorms aren’t something I usually think about in Hawaii but it’s probably a good time to make a threat assessment and evacuation plans just in case.

Son's friends house burned.
My sister evacuated her house.
Comms are down.
This is history.

Josh Green is MIA while this is going on.
National Guard guys should be going over to provide security for evacuated areas.
My kid went Big Island in 2018 and he is prepped to roll out again, but no word yet.

I better not see Green on the news putting a bandage on some tourist tomorrow

Math is hard for us peasants
Remember those math-is-fundamental covid era flashcards Green displayed for us?

He will probably in the ER tending to some burn victims with an aloe plant in one hand

Gov was on vacation when the fires got bad, coming back now (if not back already). National Guard already activated, as well as active duty support.

36 dead so far. The pictures of the devastation are incredible. it was like a tsunami made out of fire. I'm going to have to reevaluate some stuff.

As horrible as things turned out to be, I always think about what would have happened if something like Dora would do a direct hit on the islands.

Maybe there wouldn't have been wildfires since Dora would have brought tons of rain with it but the damage to life and property would be insane.

Everyone should have a disaster plan in place.  This includes pew pews.  Those who don't believe in them.....Good Luck.  Remember, when seconds count, HPD is minutes away.  That's when things are normal.

:(

Damn, that way up from last I read/heard.

I've seen a number of before/after aerial photos.  A couple of friends were in Lahaina town last week, but were in Wailuku area when the fire broke out.  They said from friends that live in the Kapalua area (just north) that the photos don't show the magnitude of what was destroyed.

My son is still waiting to roll out.
He said there would be more bodies to recover.
He was right.

Part of the problem is that politicians are playing some kind of power money game.
Another problem is logistics. The heavy vehicles were shipped to the mainland for some sort of training exercise.

If it's the national guard, they recently finished their training in Louisiana so their vehicles are on the barge coming back the long ways around.  But National Guard here has a lot of vehicles from other units they can use so shouldn't be a problem.  Funding is always an issue for large deployments but they'll figure it out quickly if not already.

There’s been a federal declaration of disaster, so money shouldn’t be as big an issue… just need to track expenses for reimbursement.

That clip of the guys driving past a body is so heavy. They are surrounded by superheated toxic gas and if they step out they’ll probably die, so auntie just stays in the road. Sobering reminder how quickly things can come apart.

This island (Oahu) is ready to burn. There is a gulch near my house that burned about 20 years ago. It is super brown and dried up. Also, I drove down to Kapolei today and saw the entire countryside completely brown and ready to burn. Then I heard there was a brush fire and rescue at Kaena point.

Take a look at your own situation and take appropriate precautions.

Where I live in rural Puna is not going to burn.  Real estate value here is too low for the ultra rich to bother with.

On the other hand, just about all of Oahu is worth bothering with.

The Andaya guy said that the sirens are for tsunamis.  Here in Mililani we have sirens.  I have one about a quarter mile away up the street.

I neva know tsunamis can reach the central part of Oahu.  But must be.  That's what the Andaya guy said.  Sirens are for tsunamis.  So we gotta believe and not question his credentials because he is a government official and is duly qualified.

Because if the sirens go off, I'm expected to run to the mountains.  Even if there is a wall of fire racing down towards me.  I supposed to say Ainokea.  I going run into the fire.

Because the sirens are for tsunamis.  And that's what the Andaya guy said.

In other words, no think for yourself.  Just do.  Let government think for you.

Maybe Andaya should check the Hawaii government website for a quick review:

including tsunamis, hurricanes, dam breaches, flooding, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, terrorist
threats, hazardous material incidents, and more.

RE: the water guy...
I saw a report that said the water source that he controlled was not connected to the municipal water system and water drops were not possible due to high winds.
I don't know if this is true or not. There is so much BS nowadays.

I do however believe my classmate who worked for the Maui board of water supply though.
He told me that the fire melted gaskets on the hydrants, causing loss of water pressure.

Two Maui residents are suing the state Land Board chair over the reassignment of the state executive in charge of regulating surface water on Maui.

Kaleo Manuel was relieved as first deputy in charge of the state Water commission after a Maui landowner complained Manuel withheld permission to recharge some west Maui reservoirs to fight the Lahaina wildfire. Firefighters have said hydrants were dry, but the cause wasn’t clear.

Environmental and water rights advocates say they suspect pressure from developers led to Manuel’s removal.

The lawsuit said only the water commission can decide who acts as its chief regulator.

The state's first sirens date back as early as 1940.
At the time, they were designed for military use in case of enemy attacks.

His idol the POTUS just mentioned almost losing his corvette and cat from a 20 minute fire.
potus visit also  caused shutdown of Lahaina emergency service crews/ SRT / FD Saturday afternoon, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning.
Some 18 FULL Matson containers were pulled out of Lahaina and moved to Wailuke so they were not visible for media circus
1,000 chairs were set up for potus speech and 50 were filled.
Meanwhile almost 2,000 residents protested and threw stuff at potus motorcade.

fema brought in dumpsters to Lahaina to throw away bottled water (because it sat in the sun too long) and food that was ALMOST expired until member of HPD stopped them saying "you can't be throwing this away while survivors are driving by"
fema also discarded shipment of insulin right off the dock saying it hadn't been kept cold even though it was still packed in dry ice )
Did not see that on news, did-ja, but you may have seen the story about several firefighters who were trapped in Lahaina during the fire until rescued by a squad car.
What they did not tell you that the squad car was "commandeered " by a fire fighter in another unit who blew thru the road block preventing them from going in to rescue their fellow team mates.

Now they say 25 out of 27 water tests show water safe to drink  and 95% of area searched by fema even though other SRT's are finding bodies in areas fema already searched.
Guess cuz them fema guys start around 9am and are back at the poolside hotel drinking by 3:30.
Meanwhile, Fed firefighters are there burning their furlough/vacation time with pay + hazard pay + gov pay doing nothing as they are not "authorized" to participate.

There's more but you get the gist.

I'm here from the gubermint here to help you.  :shake:

All I know is that biden was walking around like an impaired old man with balance issues and a demeanor of not knowing where he is or what he is doing.  His loving wife was leading him as one would a loved one at a nursing home.

On the day he left for Maui, they showed a clip of him and his wife walking up Air Force One.  When he reached the top he turned to do the obligatory wave before he got in.

I've never seen a more tired and disgruntled POTUS in all the years of my life as he definitely was showing he did not want to be there.

For this old man there never seems to be enough vacation days at the beach.

In my opinion this job of POTUS is way too much for him and he is not up to it.  If biden wins again in 2024 it would be Obama's fourth term as President.

The extreme grief from the loss of house and family and friends is having a tragic effect on survivors. Some people are giving up. That's why there is rush to provide mental health services. When you thought it couldn't get any worse, it got worse.

Add in any gun owner will then get their guns taken away, unless they get a waiver if they seek a mental health professional.  I know of someone who's depressed, but he doesn't want to jump thru hoops to get a waiver if 1 is required by hpd.  So he's going tiddy bars and its actually helping him.  He's depressed cause he's single for so long.  The money he's spending on tiddies is the money he would spend at the range on ammo or to buy a new gun.  He hasn't gone kokohead since they closed.
