I really hate the fact that law abiding citizens have their info publicly accessible. Now days someone can just google someone's name and find out so much info and exactly where they live. It's sickening. I do agree that criminal offenders info should be public. It's nice to know if you have a convicted child molester, etc living in your area, but to publicize where the registered guns of law abiding citizens are, is an invitation for criminals.

Hmmm... It seems they treat this as though gun owners were some kind of sex offender.

At least they should give the option to opt out kind of like the white pages.

Personally I don't want the criminal element having that insight. Criminals don't work and have an abundance of time to plan out burgularies and other criminal acts, and can stake out any home to determine exactly when home owners work, their schedules, routines, and so forth. They are generally cowards and plan break-ins when the home owners are not present. After all, criminals obtain firearms illegally and it would be extremely helpful for them to know exactly where to go to obtain them. jMHO

It's better to have the element of surprise.

Legal only because (unlike here) gun ownership is public information...definitely stupid.

No you don't. Take a moment and think...

It's giving criminals looking for firearms a shopping list. Okay, so you're armed...but don't discount, as JI808 mentioned, "the element of surprise". I believe a criminal knowing you've got guns is not a deterrence, but (in most cases) only increases the likelihood of a violent encounter if they come to take it.

then we'll agree to disagree.  in my opinion, if i was hitting a house, i would stay away from any potentially armed person.

Neither of us think like criminals, but I've dealt with enough of them to have a pretty good idea of the mindset...They don't care if someone is potentially armed, and they don't always act using logic and reason. Like a rat to cheese (or fat kid to cake), they only see the potential reward rather than be concerned by consequence. As an example, just look at the 50,000+ police officers assaulted every year. Officers are clearly armed and it doesn't deter a criminal from "going for it" for whatever reason.

If every confrontation were foreseen and lead to a head on/face-to-face fight, I'd definitely agree or at least say knowledge of firearm ownership wouldn't make a difference. But that's less likely when the information is there for all to see. That just gives a criminal the opportunity to plan a ambush/blitz attack or to case your home and wait to burglarize it.

Quote from: Chris Fountain
Targeting gun owners by publishing their home addresses is pretty dangerous too, Brett – either thieves will focus on them and put the guns into circulation on the street or they’ll hit the neighbors who are not identified as gun owners, figuring they’re a safer target but either way, it’s dangerously risky for this publisher to collect that information and make it accessible with just one click. Dangerous to the neighbors, if the thieves go that way, dangerous to the country, if the guns are stolen and shopped around – like a lie, a stolen gun can get 1/2 way around the world before the owner can put his shoes on.
So I’m comfortable with outing the people involved with this act.

I'm is agreement with his response...dangerous either way.

what about for those of us that live alone?  They could stake out our place, see when we leave for work and then break in and steal everything we got cause they know we're going to be gone all day.

Worse yet, what about the guys who leave a gunshy wife and a couple of young kids at home when they leave for work in the morning?

That Sauce for the Goose article was right on the money.  Those people deserve every piece of hate mail and late night phone call that comes from it.

Someone should publish online the name, residential address and telephone number of the journalist and the officers and directors of the corporation responsible for publishing the online map. It's perfectly legal.

Doesn't this list just provide a blueprint for would be thieves and other criminals to target the homes that are not on the list? I guess liberal/progressives are unaware of the Law of Unintended consequences.

Just because it is legal to publish the name, adr, etc. of gun owners, doesn't make it a good idea. Yes, it is legal for a solo woman to walk down a bad street in Kalihi (sorry, Kalihi brothers), wearing scanty clothes.
That doesn't mean it is a good idea.

My apologies to all my gun toting sisters, or those with knives, karate, pepper spray . . .  ladies who like scanty clothes . . .

Perhaps I should go knock on some news publishers doors, and "explain" my objections. It may be an interesting "conversation."

Yeaay!  I loved the idea of the remote sentry weapons system. And the claymores are a great deterrent! I used the claymore very effectively in several instances. My best kill was 12 KIA.
If I recall correctly, 700 3.2 mm steel balls at 3,937 feet/second. One time, I even took down a jeep full of targets. The jeep was, um, non-functional after the hit. So were the targets.
Warning: the claymore shoots out to 60 - 100 yards. Careful of the neighbors.

Ok, a dog is a more reasonable deterrent, but I like how you are thinking!

interesting.  People opposed them posting the gun owners, but now police are being targeted, something must be done immediately.  Is it because the information is posted, or only because they are law enforcement.  check out the link.

It's really absurd that they posted the map to begin with; nothing good can come from such stupidity. Law enforcement in many positions get death threats on a regular basis directed towards them without any additional help, but this makes them that much more vulnerable when the criminal element knows with certainty where they live because now its a huge threat to the LEO family, which is much different than a threat to the individual LEO.
