I am going to a Silhouette club meeting next week Sunday. Will give updates after
-
Heard going to need new steel targets, hope they set up Donation page.
-
I'd be down to donate.

Heard going to need new steel targets, hope they set up Donation page.
Since "they" decided to ban steel targets from the rifle range, I imagine there are many who have steel targets just gathering rust we could donate.
Maybe start an AR500 drive to collect donated targets?
-
Donate? They've been charging users for decades. In addition to all that brass they sell at the gun show and sell at recyclers, that part of the range was supposed to sustain itself.

They feed you, too, don't they?
The silhouette range isn't the only activity that charges for use. MPPL competitions in the open bays, skeet/trap, etc.
Nobody's twisting your arm.
-
Looking forward to some good news. Love going there.

Hey Darmok / slick. Show me where the fuck did I mention anyone twisting my arm?! And what is this shit about "feeding me" what does that have to do with anything? I'm just pointing out the fees that they charge people on a City park. They are not like the clubs out in the action bay. They permanently occupy the range. The clubs that operate in the action bay like MPPL have league fees, target fees etc. and they certainly don't have a presence like the silhouette club. Can anyone go and shoot in that part of the range now? What and where is the charter they have with the City? Does the City audit their books? I know people know people and this community is no different than the liberals you all complain about. I've had people come up to me just to argue, talk shit and ruin my range time. I haven't used that part of the range since their brass policy was pointed out to me by one of their "friendly" volunteers.
Like anything else in this State - Where did all the money go?
-
I hear people shooting steel targets with pistols at close range in the action bay side so idk why no can shoot silhouette or steel on rifle side
-
if anyone would like to attend the silhouette meeting, it is this sunday at 1100 at the silhouette range. I'm sure they can use all the help they can get
I think they are going to elect officers and go over what the plan is to re-open

The silhouette club has expenses to pay for. The steel targets are not cheap to replace / repair. They also have to pay
insurance costs. The city does little to help the club. I used to be a member and I have first hand knowledge of the long
list of troubles faced by the club.
If not for the club, this area could be like Clementine, lost and gone forever.

what "brass policy"? you can't collect your own brass?

I hope something positive comes out at this meeting.
The KHSC complex is such a great facility. Or it can be so. Too bad the powers that be do not share the same sentiment.
-
I may have some AR500 steel laying around   :shake:   :shake:
-
what "brass policy"? you can't collect your own brass?
Sure. Can collect your own brass
-
Here's the main points of the meeting today:
Planning to re-open end of June. Today elected officers and board of directors. Still some work to be done, plan is end of June to start shooting steel again. Public can only shoot 50 yards. Club members can shoot 100 yards.
Still need to buy more AR500 steel, and fix stuff in the office. Now at the end of Sunday will need to move all targets to the side, out of the way for LEO'S to use range weekdays. Saturday morning move targets back on range. Will update when I hear anything new
Overall it's good news. At least it's a step forward :shaka:
-

I have a few i can donate as well
-
Public can only shoot 50 yards. Club members can shoot 100 yards.
Why only club members at 100 yards? If I donate a bunch of AR500 targets, can I shoot at 100 yards? Shooting pistol out to 100 is what made it extra fun…

May have something to do with changes to the range layout. The club shoots their matches to 100 yards on the left side. I'm guessing there will be a new 50 yard berm on the right side to meet safety compliance.
Just a guess.
-
How do you join the club?
-
what "brass policy"? you can't collect your own brass?
You can collect your own brass. Once it makes it to the bucket, it's theirs. I'm all for them selling brass, other than I reload my brass 5 to 10 times, then i dump it in the bucket. In the past some of my brass already had the "Glock smile" I would be Leary of the brass there.

correct. new layout for the range. if public is to shoot at 100 yards there needs to be new berm made on the right side.
-
How do you join the club?
when they re-open just ask for the form to join. supposed to be $18 to join
that's what I plan to do
-
Now it's pushed back to mid July
-

This year? ??? I was looking forward to shooting at the silhouette side soon. Whats the delay?
-

need to clean up more and waiting for more steel targets
-
Update on when we can shoot the silhouette side?
-
It looks like they might open in late July. Keep your fingers crossed.
-
Well… we’re in August now. Did the reopening get pushed back to September?
-
Here is the good news:
The netting to keep spent shells from impacting others will soon arrive.
The new PA system is now operational.
Now the bad:
The silhouette range does not have insurance coverage and
the range cannot operate with out insurance. The club is seeking out
a policy that is affordable and still provides adequate coverage. The club is
optimistic about finding the right policy soon.
The long shut down period has aggravated the situation. Going dark created
unforeseen issues. Right now the insurance industry is hell bent on soaking their
clients and denying new clients unless they pay thru the nose. The club is in a
new client status. The controversy over the lead contamination and the advice of
the independent contractor/advisor added more fuel to the fire.
On a personal note I truly believe that the insurance industry sees themselves
in a no lose situation. I recently tried looking for a new company for my home owners
policy. I got a lot of grief and bs thrown at me. I finally decided to go back to my old
insurance company even thought they wanted a 60% increase.
On a local tv channel I watched a discussion about the insurance issues affecting Hawaii
home owners. A woman who represented the insurance industry spoke about how some
HOA's did not have adequate reserves and insurance to cover themselves and the people
in the HOA. She also spoke highly of the need to install sprinkler systems in older buildings.
She and the hosts glad handed each other over the fact that the legislature is wisely seeking
to fund the short falls for both of these issues. The only winners in this are the insurance companies.
More taxes and more tax payer money will be used to help out the "poor' insurance companies.
I am sure the insurance companies sent out their boxes of manapua and other goodies to their
favorite politicians to show their appreciation.
. .
-
Insurance sucks.
Last year I had to pay $1800 to cut our mango tree or no homeowners insurance.
-
Insurance companies are full of sh*t.
There. I said what everyone is thinking.
-
Insurance sucks.
Last year I had to pay $1800 to cut our mango tree or no homeowners insurance.
How would that even come to their attention? Were they saying it was too big or they wanted it gone?
-
How would that even come to their attention? Were they saying it was too big or they wanted it gone?
....
This is on Maui. After the Lahaina fire the insurance company sent people out to look at houses, even if it's not in Lahaina. We were so sad because that tree produced the best mangoes I've ever tasted. It will take about 2 years to start producing again. :( the reason was that some branches were hanging over the house
-
Another thing about insurance and trees. If the tree is rotten, diseased, or growing at an angle and could cause major damage to the home, the insurer expects you to shoulder the cost of removing it. However, if it falls on the house and you didn't know it was about to fall, insurance will pay for the damage.
The problem is it's a Catch-22 if you try to file a claim before it falls. Then the insurer will have proof you knew it should be removed before it can fall.
It's worse if you knew, and the tree falls on the neighbor's property and/or injures/kills someone. That makes you negligent.
-
I just helped my in laws with trimming their mango tree due to complaints from the new neighbors (renters).
I am too old to climb trees but I have a pole saw that will do the job. Mango season is pau so no fruit was
wasted.
-

I bought a climbing harness with a short section of rope and carabiners to be safe. Now I climb up and hook one or both carabiners and I am secure. Still young enough to climb but too old to fall.
-
Not yet. Bumbai
-
I suggest contacting an Attain Insurance agent or Lloyd's or London agent. They sell specialty insurance to unusual risk.
The industry as a whole will start writing more policies starting next year.
-
Idk what the hold ups are exactly. I ain't got no stroke here. Only a contact with intel. So I'm just reloading my fireball ammo in the meantime. What else can I do but reload and meditate 🧘♂️ 🙏

Just saw this on Facebook:
Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation
We proud to announce the metallic silhouette range at the Koko Head Shooting Complex will reopen for public use beginning Saturday, November 1, 2025.
This range will be available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on a first-come-first-served basis. This unique section of the shooting complex offers metal targets at 50 meters and is operated by the Hawai‘i Metallic Silhouette Shooters Association (HMSSA). No online reservation is required, but a $5 fee per shooter will be assessed by HMSSA for anyone discharging firearms at this range. Common handgun calibers may be used at this range (such as .22, .380, 9mm, .40, and .45), but only .22 rimfire rifle rounds may be discharged. Other exclusions apply, so please consult the range safety officer for more details.
The opening of the metallic silhouette range represents the final range to be reopened at the Koko Head Shooting Complex since its initial closure in September 2022. During the closure, the City hired a national outdoor shooting range expert and utilized a variety of in-house and contracted crews to: enhance the operations, maintenance, & cleaning protocols of the range, train employees in best practices for lead awareness, and complete a variety of range improvements including berm reinforcement and renovated shooting amenities.
The Koko Head Shooting Complex is O‘ahu’s only public outdoor shooting range, and we greatly appreciate the patience of the firearms community while the complex’s ranges were closed. Please visit the KHSC official website for additional information about the complex and its operations: bit.ly/kokoheadrange

Huh????

"common handgun calibers may be used at this range (such as .22, .380, 9mm, .40, and .45), but only .22 rimfire rifle rounds may be discharged"
-
No 9mm PCCs, rifle caliber pistols--Contenders, BFFs, etc.
-
It says common handgun calibers.
Wonder if revolver magnums and stuff like 10mm are allowed.
-

10mm is just one more mm than a 9mm
the 44mag is a smaller diameter than a 45
all joking aside, I think magnums and 10mmm should be good to go bc they had to get all AR500 steel
-
I think I understand what the press release is trying to say, but it could have been worded better.
-
The Koko Head Shooting Complex info is much clearer. Scroll down to the "Metallic Silhouette Range" header/section:
https://www.honolulu.gov/dpr/koko-head-shooting-complex/
-You may fire .22 rimfire rifles on this range
-Common pistol cartridges are allowed, including: .22 LR, .380 Auto, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP. Restrictions apply, so please see the range security officer for approved allowable cartridges.
-Centerfire rifles and shotguns prohibited.

Im ready for saturday
-
About 10 guys waiting at 7:30 am; by 10:30 there were only 2-3 still shooting. The small targets on the ground weren't there--the club guys said they haven't gotten official approval yet.
I burned through 300+ rounds in the first hour.
-
357, 44 magnums along with other pistol calibers allowed. 11am and it's about half full.

Went there Saturday morning was like the fourth guy there. I set up a spot. Went back to the truck to grab my 5 bucks, only to find it missing. One of my kids yoinked my money. So I packed up and went to the rifle side.....
Does snyone know if there is a cap on the rounds per mag?

Everything was bigger and cheaper before. Inflation running rampant. Prices are ridiculous. Government contracts to contractor friends with no competitive bids.
And Vegas is dead.

Got bored shooting on Saturday, after a while ended up shooting through the hole where the rebar hooks held up the steel plates. Sure kicked up a lot of dirt....lol

me too. with my bolt action 22 it's too easy to hit those targets at 50m, so we started shooting thru the hole
-
I think if I were to go to that range and used my P365 to hit something I probably would expend a 1000 rounds without hitting anything..... :(
Most likely not even halfway I'd quit and go home.

The long trigger pull on the P365s make them tricky to shoot well. I guess this is my sign to buy a big ass revolver like I always wanted.

FYI, the 24"x24" in plate is around the size of the NRA pistol instructor shooting test.

Big ass revolver. Get a S&W 500 magnum

My heart wants S&W but my wallet wants Taurus. Probably will end up with a Ruger lol. I was thinking 44 magnum.

I have S&W, Colt, Ruger. The Ruger SBH Hunter and Redhawk are my best shooters. But can't go wrong with either of the three. 44 is a great caliber. Or 357. My GP100 is my most accurate revolver

Are Colts worth the premium over S&W regular production revolvers?
Maybe equivalent to S&W Performance Center revolvers?
Have never handled a Colt, so have no idea.
My Performance Center 327 is really impeccable, including ball-detent lockup, etc., so it’s hard for me to imagine better.

+1 more for the super redhawk.

I have the 627PC. compared to the Python, the 627PC is better in SA. in DA they are very similar
I think the Colts are overpriced. but they do look nice. the PC6274 looks nice too, looks more rugged to me
I got the snake guns just bc I wanted Colt. I dont regret buying any of them

The 627 is a beaut!
Really appreciate the info from someone who knows by experience.

this weekend I'm bringing the GP100 with some hot 357 ammo and see how it rocks the steel plates :geekdanc:
I did a Wolff spring swap in the GP100 so trigger is a little better than factory one

The gp100 is a very solid revolver. I had timing issues with my colt and I had a broken trigger stud on my
SW N frame. I have had no issues with my Ruger revolvers.

Change of plan bc I found 16 boxes of 44mag ammo at the bottom of 1 of my piles of ammo. The hot stuff. Fireball ammo
So cancel the GP100 and enter the SBH Hunter 44mag. The big Dawg! >:D

Went around 1pm, 2 of 10 lanes open. Nicely renovated. My Ruger 10/22 kept zero after almost 2 years in storage…good day.

That used to really irritate me. Guys just sit around while we reset the knock down targets during cease fire. As soon as the line is hot again they rush to shoot them down as fast they can. Rise and repeat.

No, I'm the bald guy with the beard that has a RBF (resting bi*ch face). Usually in some kind of gun shirt. I bring my daughters sometimes. My son would rather stay home and play shooting video games then shoot the real thing.
does anyone know how to get ahold of the range masters there? I left my long sleeve shirt there last Saturday.

Forecasters issue flood watch
for Oahu, Kauai, Niihau
Dec. 12, 2025 • Last updated 7:25 a.m.
A rain-packed weather front approaching Hawaii promises heavy rain and
possible thunderstorms for the western islands from late tonight through
early next week, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a flood watch for Oahu,
Kauai and Niihau for late tonight through late Monday night.
“The potential for locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms will increase
across the western end of the state as a front approaches from the northwest on
Saturday, then stalls Sunday and Monday,” forecasters said.
They warned that flood prone roads and low-lying areas may be closed due to
elevated runoff and overflowing streams. “Urban areas may receive more
significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff,” according the
flood watch.
The weather service said southerly winds will increase today ahead of a front
approaching the islands from the northwest. “The front will being enhanced
showers and isolated thunderstorms to the western end of the state Sunday
through Monday night,” forecasters said. “Additional unsettled wet weather will
be possible during the middle and latter half of the new week as another front
approaches, then stalls across the western half of the state.”
