So, I applied for my CCW last Thursday.
It was a painless process, just needed 2 passport photos and had to fill out some paperwork. The application asked for the guns info, (serial #, make, model, caliber etc) which I would intend to conceal, along with my info which was was basically the same as a handgun permit application. On the back was the section where you explain why you feel the need to conceal. There were also medical waivers, and a basic questionnaire.
**FYI you need to have your handgun's actual registration and 2 passport photos with you to apply.....I learned this the hard way**
I'd like to see how many of us have applied and I'd also like to know how they replied and/or denied the application.
Any info/input would be greatly appreciated...mahalo!! :shaka:

So it's for a specific weapon?

Yes, exactly.
I believe that the CCW permit, if issued, would contain the handguns info on it along with your picture and personal info.

Dang where can you apply for passports photos? I never had one in my life

Costco does them for about $5 for 4 and 15 minutes later you get them.
I think Longs Drugs also does them.

Costco, Walgreens, ... pretty much any place with a photo service area.
Walmart has an online service. Upload the picture, edit, order, and pick up at the local store!

Wtf so even if you do get one it's only for one gun?! So much for switching carry guns, or if you eventually sell it.
Edit: So I looked at the application form in the other thread and there are multiple boxes to put different firearms in, so I'm assuming you can put a bunch of guns there you wanna carry?
-
Hopefully u can put all of em on the permit. Jus bring ur stack and when they ask which gun say "these".

It's even like that in states that actually approve CCW permits. I was reading about getting one in Nevada, and it was only for a specific firearm.

That's how it seems. The current application only had 1 spot for handgun. But on the older CCW application it allowed for 3 i believe.....not sure why it changed or if you're allowed to register more than one.
-
Also, according to HRS ยง134-9 Licenses to carry ...
Unless renewed, the license shall expire one year from the date of issue.
A fee of $10 shall be charged for each license
I read it as you only have to pay when** the license is granted! Maybe if the state REALLY NEEDS more revenue to balance the budget, they can start granting licenses?

does the chief personally review applications and approves (denies) them? what do they base their decisions on?

The "official" answer:
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0009.htm (http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0009.htm)
I'm sure the reality is somewhat less rational...

For Nevada its by handgun type - revolver, semi auto or both. You are allowed to CCW any handgun of your choice if you have qualified for both revolvers and semi autos.
I just received my Nevada CCW a couple weeks ago after applying in December, I qualified with a Glock 19 so on my permit it states I can only CCW semi autos.

I love the enthusiasm. I dont care if theres only 1 gun... just let me have 1 thats all i want :shake:
-
Here's the form. Sorry the quality is poor, took pic with my phone before I filled it out. On the back is the area where you explain why you want/need a ccw permit.

Thanks! Now we have something to study!
Racial extraction?? I might have to use a lifeline for that one!!

Fancy way of asking if your white black Asian or hispanic

Fancy way of asking if your white black Asian or hispanic
if im not mistaken just like when you register they want specifics example. ; Japanese or filipino not just "Asian " but what we all need to work on i feel is the most important is the reason why we feel we need to ccw. And a good one which cannot be denied. ;)

Ya, that one made me think a lil.
Even better was the "Build" one. I actually asked the officer what to put.....he shrugged and said "average??".

ah, thanks for clarification.

No lie, you put large muscular build
-

Dang....how'd you know?! LoL!! ;D
-
I dare someone to put "buff" build. I would put "noveske"
Not like its gonna get approved anyway
-
So if a private citizen (no retired LEO) was ever issued a CCW permit, is there a requirement to go through any firearms or CCW training?
I wish someday I could CCW legally in Hawaii. Wishful thinking...
-
If were ever gonna have cc then we need to remove the magazine limit and tweak self defense laws
-

I agree. However, if we could just get CCW approved I'd be more than happy to carry multiple 10 rd mags!
Now... :stopjack:
So, has anyone else (other than Chris) applied for a CCW.....anybody at all?? ???
-
I haven't applied yet. The whole idea of applying, just to get denied? If we all jump on the band wagon...I'll be the first to go down to HPD and ask for an application. Supposedly only five people applied last year? Maybe it's time to take action and make an effort to help Chris.
-

That's sad! :(
Just curious, where did you get that number from??
Maybe it's time to take action and make an effort to help Chris.
Yes, it is!!
-
I think I read five applicants in one of the other CCW threads. For some reason that number stuck with me...
-
It's a lost cause at this point and time, but I would apply for ccw if we all made a stand to prove a point or try to exercise our constitutional right.

I hear ya man, it's definitely disheartening to think you're applying just to be shot down but you should still do it....I did!!
I mean it's easy for the chief of police to dismiss 5 applicants but imagine him rejecting 50, 100 or even 500.....those kind of numbers would be hard to ignore. Without a true demand change will never happen, it takes a group effort and the collaboration of the masses to bring about this type of change!!
Not to mention I'm sure it would really help Chris' case to have 100's of applicants trying to get CCW permits as opposed to just a handful!
-
I think I applied before =p.

Yes, my friend...I believe you have! ;)
How did they notify you anyway, was it via letter or phone call??
-
Back in feb there was a guy applying. He was gettig his prints done at the ink station. Everyone was just staring and whispering to their neighbor about it

Ya, that's pretty much what happened when I did mine.

Chris, curious to what were the reasons you put when applying?
-
I remember a legislator, Sam Slom, introduced a bill for Open Carry (I think) a few years ago but that didn't get far. Need more conservative and 2A friendly politicians in office.
-
so i was thinking with all these denials wouldnt this be at some point a legal matter like discrimination. so if we all applied got denied made a class suit questioning the situation brought it to national media embarresed the crap out the city saying why is the citizens being denied a lawful act with in this state or even viewing who has been approved might even prove a case. and how is outta all of us on here no ones a damn attorney??? :grrr: :wtf: can we get some to join the ranks please!
-
I think it would be interesting to have some local news station interview chief kealoha and ask him why they deny everybody and what circumstances have to be fulfilled to issue a permit. Funny how its up to someone else if your life is important and you should be able to defend it

There already are/have been cases. Current is Baker v. Kealoha.

The issue, in part, is that the yearly AG's report comes out and says "4-5" citizens applied. I can't recall where it was said, but on one occasion the Chief replied that CCW wasn't a big issue since only a few people applied. I think it would be much more difficult to so easily dismiss the CCW issue if hundreds of folks applied. Furthermore, assuming none of those "hundreds" that applied got a permit, it would make any subsequent argument that it wasn't a big deal moot.
I know that Chris had tried this before, but I think to be successful, we'd need to have a system in place where "we" (whoever that might be...) kept track of who submitted applications, along with encouraging folks to digitally record their application (take a picture with your phone before submitting it...) so that we know the actual numbers and can challenge the AG report if it tries to under-report the number of applications submitted.

I'm in...next time I have to stand in line, I'll submit one.
