I bet it's not in most associations rules lol. Not to many people think to exclude you building or a range in your hous e:P.

Hahaha, your right but it would cost me a ton to get this project going!!!

Nice. Anyone know what Hawaii's laws are in terms of private shooting ranges? I thought I read somewhere that you needed at least 40 acres or something like that to have a private range on your land.

Sign me up, too. The biggest rounds I'll fire will be 7.62X39. Oh, is this range on Oahu? :D

Q and kevlar, its a little 1 laner with a firing pit at the end, me and my brother made on our own due to over crowedness at the range at one point. We use to test fire bigger calibers but the complaints was outrageous. Hpd would come but to only tell use to tone it down. It use to be a 100 yards but For right now I only have a 60to50 yard line to work with due to eggplants and other greeneries growing in the way.. So lately I've been perfecting my carbine and handgun techniques.

You're the range master, whatever your rules are are the rules. :shaka:
I'd be happy shooting rimfire.
Pistol and 5.56 would be cool too though. I'll leave the 30 ought at home.
Shooting with 2A bros would be fun. ( shooting both guns and the shit )

So anyone tried out this UGrange? Lol

You know you can buy property on the Big Island that have lava tubes you can stand up in. My neghbor has a tube that is 8 ft. across. These tubes are a ready made underground range if you get one that goes straight for at least 25 yards for a handgun range. Some of these tubes you can walk for miles.
I have a 25 yd handgun range that can easily be made to 100 yds in about a week. Even a 50 yd range is good for rifle if you use reduced size targets. I also never had a problem or complaint shooting my AR15 and 9mm.

One of the things that inherited at my work recently is co-small arms range responsibility. It primarily is for certifying ranges and a POC for my area for the national level certifier. Anyways, I've gone on certification trips with my former coworker (since retired) and range certification for indoor is more about ventilation than anything. The backstop and other concerns about "danger zone" and stuff are relatively easy with enclosed ranges. For Hawaii, the durability of the ventilation system is one of the major things. No proper ventilation and you're doing essentially poisoning people.
There are actually a number of companies that manufacture modular shooting ranges. A little as two 40' shipping containers that can be pretty easily delivered and secure. All you would need is a couple of concrete foundation blocks (of course the open space) and you're set. The manufactured ones that I've seen with ventilation aren't cheap though.

Hehehehe just came across some videos on IG seen some friends shooting at a ranch or something. My other friend I know was in big island. The other one I'm sure was somewhere on Oahu. Mad me curios to see if anyone knows about a 3rd party range. ;D

:( I'm assuming your range is located on big island? I wonder how much starting cost is for property, with lava tubes. Is your range a lava tube? Or backyard?

Yes, I live in upper Puna. Gun friendly neighbors. My range is in the back corner boardering the forest reserve, not in a lava tube. I am sure there are lava tubes below me, but no entrance on my property.
FYI, vacant land here, all 3 acre lots, start as low as $14k. $14k would have bought 170 sq ft of land of my old property in Kailua Oahu.
-
Thanks for shedding some light! I appreciate it. 14k for land sounds very nice. I will surely consider that. Would love to have a place for a family get away.

Me sense of land area is seriously off. 3 acres sounds like TONS of land! Especially from my 1100 sq ft place that if I sold I could apparently get many acres in Puna.
That said, my aunt has a 10 acres ranch property in VA, near the WV line. I went to visit her in August and we took a stroll around the property. Not sure if we got to see the whole boundary of the property, but we were done in about 15 minute by walking. 10 acres in my mind was HUGE, but it didn't seem that big when I visited. That may have due to scale of the properties where she lived where apparently 10 acres is a "starter" lot. ;D
I envisioned that if I had 10 acres, I would definitely need an ATV. I mean she has 4 horses, but I don't think she really rides any of them around the property. She does have a hunting stand on her property, which she doesn't use, and I actually saw a couple of deer within her fencelines. Her property has a natural spring and pond, so it is quite attractive for the deer.

3 acres does sound like a lot. Shoot any born and raised hawaii resident would think 1 acre is decent but 3 and 10! Talk about all the things running through your head the things you can do! And that's for starters.... hahaha yea I seriously contemplated on moving up state for open firearms and big yards. But if I can get a decent amount of property for a good price on another island I'd settle with that. You guys must've been power walking to cover 10 acres that quick. I'd picture a atv also with that much property.

I use an ATV to go in the back of my lot, which is 266x490 ft. Most of the lots here are 125x1070 ft. There is a guy who has 5 of those all in a row for sale on a block in my subdivision, and there are no houses on that road. The blocks here are 4/10s of a mile.

Damnnnnnn. You got some area. So that's just over 3 acres for sale. Is that AG land? No wonder when my friends are on big island they always end up at someone's place mag dumping. Haha.

If my land was large enough I would buy 2 full sized shipping containers, join them together, get a strong vent system added with drywall/ceiling tiles and use that for pistol/shotgun. If there was a WROL situation, I would just practice in the back which is conservation land to a mountain.

2 full size shipping containers would be pretty damn nice. Would be good for the sound also. WROL situation free range everywhere. Be kinda scary tho

Yep, Hawaii people are so land poor that 3 acres seems like quite a bit. Mainland, different story. Anyway, you can still get some good sized lots in upper Puna area for a reasonable price. However if you plan to shoot on your property it still needs to be ideally located and with neighbors far away or "like minded" neighbors that are cool with it. Some area's even on large acreage you might get people calling 911. If your property is tough to access you will probably never get a visit even with a complaint unless if it becomes a severely chronic issue.
Just for a reference 10 acres is only about .61 of a mile around the entire perimeter. 25 acres is about .83 of a mile and 50 acres is only about 1.1 mi. End to end it isn't that far unless if it is real narrow and long. Terrain can be more of the issue. If you are in upper Puna and make a land purchase, be aware that if it isn't cleared, or easily accessible it will cost you a good bit to get that done. If you were serious about land on the Big Island or upper Puna in particular lmk. There are ideal places to look for if shooting is your thing. But also remember that the Puna district is not the safest place and the more remote you are, may not be a good thing for some people.
-
When I was shopping for a home, I specifically looked at places where I could set up a range. I looked at larger lots, even one 21 acres, but the larger lots actually had closer neighbors than my 3 acre lot. What really sealed the deal was my wife liked the house and the neighbor's wife diirectly across the road, (no one within 500 yards either side of him) came up to meet us. First time meeting us and she says, "We look out for each other around here, and most of us have guns." My kind of people and we have become good friends.

The manufactured container ranges that we worked with were rated for up to .308, but the walls and ceiling here pretty thick rubber based panels. Not as thick as I thought though.

I would LOVE a ranch type property on the BI. I love the many things that the BI offers, but I don't see myself doing that for many, many years. Maybe not until retirement. :(
Is the property adjacent to yours available? If I did get a property like 3+ acres, a range area would be a must! That said, I've thought about areas like eastern WA and Idaho to get some recreation type land. But alas, prob not more than a dream...
For my aunts property, there were several paddock areas that we didn't walk around. That and some parts may have been hidden beyond certain area, but do recall thinking that that wasn't a vast as I had envisioned. Still a LOT of land though! She doesn't do much farming either. Mostly just lots of area for her horses to roam and her various pets. She doesn't hunt now, but she had expressed interest in shooting a lever 30-30 that she has. I believe is an older Winchester. She had wanted to give it to me when I was like 12, but my mom said no... damn. Haha.

Yes, it is mostly about backstop and neighbors when looking for property. The smaller the lot the more chances of having neighbors close by, or potentially someone building close in the future. There are still great places, but something to consider. Buying vacant land can be a bit different when it comes to purchase.
As for my area, the properties are all larger sized parcels, in the 50 to 100 acre range.

Neighbors dont matter, as long as rounds dont leave your property there is no law prohibiting shooting on your property. (correct me if im wrong)

In theory and in an ideal world, yes. Through being an RSO and being involved with range design and certification, no.
Neighbors, particularly non-likeminded ones can really jam you up if they have just a little bit of common sense, and sometimes not so much. . . I recall a story of people shooting in private land up on the North Shore. It was a while ago, but something about the neighbor, who was generally friendly, reported damage on a vehicle from what the neighbor suspected (or stated) was from a stray round. I don't recall all the details, but I recall that just bringing possible damage into question was enough to put things on hold for a long while. Eventually, they determined that it wasn't due to the neighbors range and both went about their lives, with the range also making some layout revisions.

Very true. Especially the neighbors. A good backstop can be built. I built my backstop with all the logs and branches from the waiwi and ohia I cut down to make the atv trail to the back of my property. The lots around me have been vacant since at least 1995. Hopefully it stays like that for another 22 years. Also the forest reserve behind me is not one that is open to public hunting. I was thinking of walking a couple hundred yards back there and maybe set up some targets. I would love to cut an atv trail, but don't want something visible from the air.
ATV trail on my property that goes to my range.

50 to 100 acres!!! Dayum!
I have design drawings for shoothouses. Just sayin. ;D
For that large a property, an ATV sounds like a must. Horses would be cool as well, though they can require quite a bit of care. Would also def need some heavy equipment.
