We should be very wary on "compromising" on the requirements for the CCW.  There should be no requirements other than what it already required to get a license to obtain a firearm.  As you know, anti-gunners, will put a foot into the door and over the years they will eventually get their wish, no one gets a CCW and no one gets guns.  Think about it, if you can't aim, shoot, and hit the target outside the home, what makes you think you can aim, shoot, and hit the target during a home invasion.  The "qualification" will become the new standard to obtain a gun and you can't practice because you don't have a license.  Also, what will the "qualification" cost and how often will you need to pass.  i.e. every year, every two years, etc.

I just finished my letter to my HPD police chief
for conceal carry per 134-9.
I also mention 18 US Code section 242.
It goes in the mail tomorrow.
SCOTUS just gave us a hammer to slam them with.

.

I believe there needs to be an organized day when a large group submits a Carry Conceal request to HPD.  When HPD denies, then the group files for a suit.  HPD or the State of Hawaii doesn't need to change anything until someone legally challenges the procedure.

To the original question/topic:  What Actually Defines an Assault Rifle?

Any rifle that can be used during the commission of an Assault.  At least that is what the anti 2A wants as a definition so they can ban all rifles.   :wtf:

Only if you shoot with #notrealdoctors

Recommend you get an optic ready Staccato then. . .  ::)
I was considering the C2 but it still looks bulky for a CC.  Might need to look for some YT vids on CC review.

There is no "best ccw" gun. Its the indian, not the arrow. Same goes for spray n pray.

In the end, it comes down to what features you prefer. Luckily, HI removes 1 variable, cant exceed 10rd mag.

For a carry conceal, 10rds is fine for me because I’m going small, light gun.  If it was open carry, then I would go full size, and 10rds is not enough.

I hope you were being a comedian with writing "Let's Go, Brandon" on the application.

One of the things the police will ALWAYS have is the power to deny a carry permit to anyone they deem to be of low or untrustworthy character.  If they know you are the town bully, having had multiple complaints filed against your for threatening people and damaging property, HPD has a duty to make sure you can be trusted with a firearm carried on your person.

Making political or disparaging remarks on your official application may not be received as "funny."

Ah but that is the whole thing about constitutional carry.  The state has to prove unworthiness to deny a right which would probable be at the level of denying a citizens right to bear arms.  It has already been adjugated that disparaging remarks against a public official is a protected 1st Amendment right.  So as long as it doesn't say "Lets Kill Brandon", giving a finger, talking, or writing openly against our leaders would not rise to a level of denial of a Right.  However, the state will try and will hope that the citizens will not fight back because of the large legal fees that would be incurred.  That is how the State will flex it's anti gun right laws, by breaking the bank of the disenfranchised citizen.  (I read somewhere that a lawsuit that goes from local to SCOTUS can cost upwards to $1 million.  I got money but not like that.)

General Discussion / Carry Conceal - What would you do?

The big news in the 2A front was the SCOTUS hearing on New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett, which is about Carry Conceal.  As we all know, any ruling that happens at the SCOTUS level will impact all laws in all 50 states and the DC.

So, lets assume the case goes pro 2A and Hawaii turns into a "Shall Issue" for carry conceal.  What will you do to celebrate this victory?

I will start it off:

1.  Write in the this Forum.  "LETS GO BRANDON" with a subject of "2A Carry Conceal Constitutional"
2.  Walk in  the next business day and apply for a permit with the reason of "IT IS MY CONSTITUIONAL RIGHT TO CARRY CONCEAL SO LETS GO BRANDON"
3.  Submit a permit to purchase a new gun.  SA Hellcat Micro, HK P30SK or SW Shield.
4.  Carry it for about a week then put it away because really I have no desire to carry conceal every day.  However, the option is there when I think it is necessary to be armed,  This is what I want, the right to choose the time and place to protect myself and family.  Sorry but other people doesn't fit in my equation for protection.  I'm not a police office or a super hero.  So make sure you are armed because if I can escape with myself and family without shooting, I'm out of there.

I think this place in Mililani Town Center is already preparing for it.  I walked past this place (I think it was an insurance office or something) and there was this prominent sign on the door for all to see:

NO WEAPONS, FIREARMS, OR EXPLOSIVES ALLOWED ON PREMISES

 ;D

So funny.  I had a good laugh.  I guess this business will close up soon since no one here does anything illegal.

If you are carrying concealed and the gun is well hidden, how would they know unless they use a metal detector or you allow them to pat down.  Also, what could the premise do other than to ask you to leave.  As long as there is no criminal action that the store can imposed, then I don't care about the sign.

If allowed, my carry conceal will not be a large 5" bull barrel 45 which would hard as heck to hide (Hey cowboy, is that gun under your shirt or you just happy to be in this store).  Other than looks, I probably wouldn't want to open carry a full size gun for any significant time (Carrying a Berretta 9mm was a PIA, especially when you also carried a long barrel) .   I would most likely buy a 3" Hellcat Micro 9mm, H&K 3" P30SK 9mm or a S&W 3" M&P Shield 40cal.

You can't force a state like Hawaii to "go all the way" toward Constitutional Carry with no limits on when and where you can carry anytime in the foreseeable future.

Hawaii did not "grow up" in the same environment as the other states where a firearm meant the difference between life & death, freedom & oppression, or victim & protector.

It's difficult to get an island state to embrace the gun culture when they've never lived within that culture and the benefits it brings.

It's going to be a gradual process.  I see anti-gun politicians talking, and it's as if they could just as easily be talking about rabies.  They have this isolationist view that being an island gives them greater control over their lives.  Hard to break that mentality.

We have no choice.  It'll have to be a gradual approach.  Forcing people to change their culture is not a quick or easy undertaking.  There may be a ton of gun owners here, but we have to contend with the others who are opposed to public firearm ownership in any capacity.

Hawaii will not have a choice once SCOTUS makes a ruling.  If SCOTUS makes carry conceal a constitutional right, i.e. make it a shall issue, then Hawaii will need to issue permits unless they have just cause to deprive a person of their constitutional rights.

In reality, it will be very bumpy for gun owners and the government.  Anti 2A will call the police because "they think" they see a gun which should be concealed.  (This is one reason why I believe the law should be Open Carry with an option to carry conceal).  Since the gun owner broke the condition of carry conceal, they then become a felon, losing all their rights to own a gun.  Bottom-line: Hawaii and other states will make the it very expensive on the gun owner to Carry (conceal or open).  Also, Hawaii will push the boundaries of sensitive areas.  Just the mask mandate, they will put things like gatherings of 25 or more people outside, areas that may have minors under the age of 18 (parks, beaches, b-day parties, etc).  It will be all contested but it will be yet another expensive battle and other 10 years before SCOTUS will need to re-opine 2A.

What I am concerned about is what issues that the justices opinion will address.  i.e. 1. What test to apply? (This is very important.  If they opine that Time, Text, and Tradition is the test, it will cause 100's of 2A cases to be re-herd, tailored to only carry conceal or carry in general.  If they don't address the test, then all the rulings stay put and most likely any appeal to SCOTUS will be denied.  Also, the Justice question that tradition was open carry and not concealed.  So it is possible for them to opine that Open Carry is constitutional and not carry concealed.  I am not sure if SCOTUS could or would do this since it was not part of the compliant or redress), 2. the limits that the state can impose (sensitive areas), 3. could the state charge ($) to exercise a right (this is really important because it cross over all the amendments.  Just image if states can charge people to exercise their 1A right to free speech.  I not talking having to pay security detail or renting a space, I am talking about getting a permit just to talk.  Just image if the state said before you can exercise your 1A, you must get a certificate that you have taken debate or public speaking course, that you are a subject matter expert on the subject, and take a test to show proficiency prior to getting a permit to speak.  By the way, to make sure that your speech is not "hate speech" we need you to apply for a permit which includes the certificates mention prior, submit the speech (i.e. like a serial number), a background check to ensure that you are not a terrorist and in 14 days you can pick up your permit.  However if you don't pick up your permit within 5 days of issue, then you have to resubmit.  Then after you give your speech, you have to return to certify and provide a video tape of the speech to ensure that there was no alteration of the speech that was submitted during the permitting process.

Anyway I ranting....  Hawaii and the public will just get a rude awaking when people start carrying.

Wow 600 yards with iron.  At 300 the post already hides the body.  I could just imagine what 600 would look like.  I never tried shooting anyone that far away.

1-6 should be enough for 100-200 yards
I've never shot with a Burris optic before, so I'm not sure the clarity or reticle or function of optic, etc
if its going to be a HD AR, then maybe a 1x holo sight or similar reflex sight might be a good option for fast target acqusition at close quarters.  but if you are going to shoot 100+ yards, maybe a LPVO might be a good option to go to distance and still be able to go down to 1x for up close
My son plays a video game that apparently uses the Burris scope.  The only brand name I now is Busnell.  That’s because they advertise like crazy.

What magnification scope to use for 100-200yard shots with an AR15 16" barrel?

My son is saving up to buy a Burris RT-6 Riflescope 1-6x24mm.  I have only shot iron sights or CCO so I have no experience on what a good magnification would be.

Thanks for the input.

I shoot .22LR, 5.56/.223 and I like to use splatter targets.  Looks like a spotting scope is needed for clarity.

That's Great!  If I get my way I just might end up with a Bino and a Spotting Scope!

My son saving up for a scope for his AR15 so he is shooting iron sights.  That is why the bino are good enough.  I told him that if he hits anywhere in the black circle at 100yards, he is doing good.  Spotting scope may be needed once he gets a decent scope and gets his grouping down to sub 1inch.

This is the Bino I bought from Amazon.  https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07VRB9FW6?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

In legal terms: What does it mean "firearms will be considered unregistered."?  i.e Does that mean you can't use it for any purpose until it is registered?  Can be confiscated because it was not registered within 5 days? etc.

I traveled that path before and you'll be wasting money. Get a pair of binos for other things. You won't be able to see bullet holes clearly at 100 yards with a small objective that are in binos. An objective of 60mm is the least to see holes at distance. I had a Kowa 601 with a 25x eyepiece and now a Konus with an 80mm obj.  A Konus 80mm is around $200 and a good Kowa is around $800. Again objective size is just as important as magnification. Too much mag and you get mirage, short eye relief and light decreases.

Another option is a remote cam attached to your target. Raspberry Pi cams are cheap and a Rasp Pi Zero is close to free at $5. A pair of WiFi cards and you can send HD quality images to your phone. The code is open source.
https://github.com/OpenHD/Open.HD

A piece of advice. Setup your shooting position first then setup your spotting scope. I see people setup their spotter first way on one side of the table then setup their shooting position on the other side. WIth that you end up breaking position every time to spot a shot. More work and its more challenging to shoot good groups.

It is difficult to get a cheap way of seeing bullet holes at 100 yards without frustration. You'll spend time or money on it
 Unless ...

They only do that when they zero.  Qualification, the targets move.

I want to buy another binocular or possibly a monocular.  I have a tiny binocular that I originally bought for sports viewing.  It's ok for when I go to the pistol range at 25 yards.  But I want to buy a binocular or monocular that is good enough to see the bullet holes in the target at 100 yards.

Is a 10X45mm or similar enough power to see the bullet holes at 100 yards?  I also see this monocular on Amazon that is 12X50mm.

I don't want to invest in a spotting scope right now.  I'm just a casual shooter and my guns are not tack drivers anyway.  Plus a set of binoculars or monocular is great for other things like hiking, boating, and shit like that.

Any recommendations or advice will be appreciated!  Thanks! :shaka:

I bought a pair of 10x45 binoculars from Amazon, $30.  I use the a splatter target, shooting 5.56, and I can see the hits clearly enough.
