General Discussion / Former President Trump, shot on stage at a rally
« on: July 13, 2024, 01:29:55 PM »
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2024/07/13/donald-trump-whisked-off-stage-pennsylvania-after-loud-noises-rang-through-crowd/

This is for the history books.

[ BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump’s campaign said in a statement that he was “fine” after being whisked off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after apparent gunshots rang through the crowd.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

The former president and presumptive Republican nominee was showing off a chart of border crossing numbers during his last rally before the Republican National Convention opens Monday when bangs started ringing through the crowd. Trump could be seen reaching with his right hand toward his neck. There appeared to be blood on his face.

He quickly ducked behind the riser as agents from his protective detail rushed the stage and screams were heard in the crowd of several thousand people. The bangs continued as agents tended to him on stage. ]

Off Topic / Re: Raise minimum wage, what could go wrong

Raising Minimum wage will get rid of entry level type of jobs.
Since it raises the bottom line for businesses, depending on the industry they will cut costs somewhere.
Lead to more automation in certain sectors, as we've seen with self-checkouts and robot servers.
Now with the advent of artificial intelligence tools, many more administrative and technical jobs will go into decline.
A finance or admin department can shrink from 100 people to almost a tenth with people in the right skillset.

That’s the sales pitch. In reality the stuff breaks down regularly and nobody can get parts in a timely manner, much less someone who can actually do the repair work for a reasonable rate without some brutal service contract where you never actually own the equipment and aren’t allowed to work on it yourself. By the time you add up all the hidden costs the employees start looking like a bargain.

Reminds me of fast food chains and their equipment that breaks down.  McDonalds for example always has an issue with their ice cream machine and needs to call a specific company technician to fix it.

Quote
The ice cream machines have earned a reputation because they shut down and require tending to when they encounter a problem (just like us, fr). It’s a major drain for franchise owners but a boon for the machine’s manufacturer, Taylor Company, which has an exclusive repair contract with McDonald’s.

-Every time an $18,000 McD’s ice cream-maker breaks down, franchisees need to call up a Taylor technician. If a non-Taylor handyperson is used, the ice cream machine’s warranty is revoked.

-Fixing the complex machinery costs $350 for every 15 minutes of service, according to Ars Technica, so it’s no wonder Taylor has generated 25% of its revenue from maintenance and repair services in recent years, as Inc. reported.

Even with the upfront risks in the future some business owners may want to gamble on these kitchen and waitstaff robots than actually hire people.

That's pretty wild for the Boing 737s,  I wonder if Alaska Air technicians just glossed over the pre-flight checks or if the plane in question had any maintenance or deferred maintenance that wasn't addressed.

From my perspective, pinnacle incident events are usually, a combination of inefficient practices, behavior, lack of knowledge or experience and a whole slew of things.

For example, a company can put a fresh new tech to do maintenance, but a lot of things get missed because the new guy isn't sure of what defects to look for.

I wonder what the investigation details will be, when they give the public some kind of statement.

Well along the same lines of thought we do have waiter/waitress style of robots, that essentially serve food to customers at some restaurants.

https://youtu.be/_VVZhvSjNTw?si=hfWgLq2HFkGuu_wq

And in the coming future this appears to become the norm, at least for the next generation of youths.

So adding on the mix of robots which can prep and/or cook food. Some restaurant establishments may choose to pay an upfront of $10k or so for a robot than an $18/hr wage by 2028.

It may be best to steer the next generation to tradesmen, IT technician careers or some form of computer based field.

In development at Stanford University by a team of 3 researchers  Zipeng Fu, Tony Z. Zhao & Chelsea Finn.

The Mobile version is a 2nd Generation of the ALOHA platform (A Low-cost Open-source Hardware System for Bimanual Teleoperation)

Maybe in the next several years to a decade we will have commercial level robots than can cook and do dishes.

This is almost like the "Protectron" from Bethesda's Fallout games or various household robots from modern media.

What's your guys take on the next generation development of robots & AI?

no they were piloted planes
fixed wing "drones" require more 'piloting'

Well if they were piloted planes, they did a good job in their maneuvers.  Flight path wise, 2 would trail one and they pretty much branched and circled specific spots around Waipahu.
I think some drone vids on Youtube may have caught  a plane in view here or there. but no high res quality.

But looking up from the ground, I guess I dismissed them as drones due to size.

Edit: The rumor about HPD buying drones, was from this KITV article that friend sent, I know its dated, but that's how rumors always snowball.

U mean the robotic covid dog.

Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalk

I wouldn't be surprised if HPD bought fixed wing drones, along with ATVs for the beach and Camera dogs for places they don't want to personally go.

I heard a rumor that HPD was going to be flying drones to catalog peoples areas who were launching illegal fireworks.

I'm not sure how accurate that rumor is, but around 1120PM-ish, besides quad-rotor drones, I did see about 5 fixed wing drones flying over the Waipahu area, circling about.

On another line of thought, this years explosions did feel slightly less compared to last years.

I personally felt that the beginning of the downfall of pride in America, was when they banned the Pledge of Allegiance from public schools in the early 2000s.

So seeing more people disrespect the country as a form of free speech, is sad to see.

I think a possible cause is the drug called social media, plus the lack of morals & punishments.

A lot of people do things for clout or infamy, to get that dopamine hit.

Showing themselves committing crimes or injustices to gain a reputation, regardless of consequence.

General Discussion / Re: BREAKING NEWS: 2nd Amendment HALTED In Hawaii!

This is news to me too.  This pretty much sucks for everyone that wants to be law-abiding citizens.

All of that is true, but the #1 reason you don't rely on the gov't for protection is THEY CAN NOT PROTECT YOU.

Even if they had a legal duty to protect, they just don't have the resources.  Nor can they be everywhere at once when the bad things happen.

The saying goes, "YOU are your own first responder."  Either you are prepared and capable of providing protection, emergency medical aid, and fire fighting & rescue services on your own, or you better hope you never have to.

Even if the gov't had a legal duty, the bad thing has already happened.  All you -- or your next of kin -- can do is sue for negligence and failure to provide protection.  At that point, you're either dead, severely injured or a rape victim.  No amount of tax money in your bank account will make up for that.

This is a good academic discussion, but in reality, there's no such thing as government protection unless you're a governor, president, one of their family members, etc.  if you don't have gov't-funded bodyguards 24/7/365, then you don't have gov't protection.

Period.

I do agree that everyone is responsible for their own wellbeing, health & safety. And it makes sense to me that no body of government/ military, any type of law enforcement or first responder has an obligation of duty towards me.

And adding to your point in the case Freitas v. City and County of Honolulu  574 P.2d 529 (1978)

Three brothers seek to recover damages from the City and County of Honolulu (City) and two police officers for injuries suffered from the shooting of the plaintiffs by a fourth brother.
It an after the fact case of, damages & injuries caused by a family member terrorizing another family member. And the claim that police didn't do enough to stop the shootout from happening.

For the court case of Namauu v. City and County of Honolulu 614 P.2d 943 (1980)

Apellants brough an action against Randall C. Nakea, the State of Hawaii, the City and County of Honolulu, the County of Hawaii and named and unnamed individuals. Appellants alleged in their complaint that Randall C. Nakea sexually attacked and shot and killed their decedent, Junedale Namauu on October 10, 1974. They further alleged that the police departments of the two counties were negligent in failing to apprehend Nakea who had left the out-patient program to which he had been assigned by the State Hospital.

In both the above cases, people had to sue after-the-fact to get some form of justice.

I'm sure there are more cases like what you mentioned, where people sue government bodies or agencies for negligence or failure for... aid, assistance, protection, any acts which may make a situation worse, etc.

The queen refused to open the armory because she thought that the land grab was ridiculously illegal and she didn't want to shed blood on something that could be easily worked out diplomatically.

That's not how power works, though. The lack of resistance was taken as a sign that the people were sick of the monarchy (which was actually the case for a large percentage of the population) and legal exceptions were made.

Still it makes one wonder what the outcome might have been if there was a rifle in every home instead of locked up in an armory.

At least from how I learned it from High School I thought the Queen's response was weak. Maybe it was the naïve belief that, the US would do the right thing and give her back her kingdom.

In my view, even if their were bloodshed and martyrs for the Kingdom of Hawaii, maybe the merchants would rethink their actions, much less the US for assisting in the coup of another country.

But that is another reality for the multi-verse theory. That somewhere in another timeline, the Kingdom of Hawaii exists.

In regards to the Long Gun permit, what is posted on HPD's FAQ page https://www.honolulupd.org/police-services/firearms/

How soon can I renew my Long Gun Permit?
Not more than 14 calendar days prior to the expiration date.

Please refer to this page for frequently asked questions
If you have additional questions, please call (808)723-3190

If things have changed, they are not posting it on their website

I learned about Hawaii's State Constitution for about a day in High School. It was right after we glossed over the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy and breezed through the Republic of Hawaii.

In high school It's interesting how Guns are literally what changed Hawaii history.

King Kamehameha used guns to unite the islands.

King Kalakaua was held at gunpoint to sign away his royal authority (Bayonet Constitution)

Queen Liliuokalani, was overthrown by merchants with the aid of US Marines & USS Boston (boat with a bigger gun), you know to protect American Interests.

And when the royalists tried to reclaim their monarchy, their plan was foiled, guns were confiscated and the Queen was forced to abdicate in order to save her people.

So I guess "disarmament" is kinda deep rooted in Hawaiian history

Other than Castle Rock v. Gonzales, 545 U.S. 748 (2005)

One of the earliest cases of Public Duty doctrine was South v. Maryland (1865), in which the Supreme Court upheld the decision that Police Officers did not have a duty to protect an individual from harm unless they had a special relationship with that individual.

Another case is Warren v. District of Columbia (1981), In separate cases, Carolyn Warren, Miriam Douglas, Joan Taliaferro, and Wilfred Nichol sued the District of Columbia and individual members of the Metropolitan Police Department for negligent failure to provide adequate police services. The trial judges held that the police were under no specific legal duty to provide protection to the individual plaintiffs and dismissed the complaints.

DeShaney v. Winnebago County Dep’t of Social Servs. (1989), the Supreme Court held that social workers did not have a duty to protect a child from harm by his father, even though they had been aware of the father’s abusive behavior. This was legal precedent which applied to government agents/workers (e.g. social workers, etc).

So I hade my phone on Airplane mode & using Wifi + wifi calling. I didn't get the FEMA message. I usually do this to save on mobile data.

my cousins phone with mobile data off & using wifi + wifi calling did get the FEMA message.

So the ISP for the wifi network is Spectrum. I assume ISP's aren't involved and just Phone Companies.

General Discussion / Re: New PTA form at hpd

I just checked HPD's website.

https://www.honolulupd.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/SOH-Firearms-Application-fillable-07.23-rev-FINAL.pdf

Is this the new PTA form  that is being used now or is it different?  The whole thing is like 12 pages, but supposedly you only need the first 8 pages, is that right?
