FWIW, licensed hunters are the biggest contributors to wildlife preservation than any other group, via the licensing fees.  Basically, our choice is to either fund an effective wildlife management program in our state, or deal with decimated wildlife populations and/or diseased and starving animals.  It's worth a dedicated hunter's time and ten bucks to get involved in our respective state's WMP's, because otherwise, it can easily get corrupted by whimsical ignorant local politicians, pressure from high-profile goofball groups like PETA, Federal overreach and/or dominated by local rich landowners.  Generally speaking, what's good for the landowners that lease to licensed hunters is good for everyone involved, but that is unfortunately not true for every statute.  For instance, some laws can be clearly identified as an attempt to make hunting an exclusive, discriminatory "rich man's sport"; most common in many states are minimum acreage requirements to qualify for certain types of exclusive permits.  This is the sort of thing that more hunter scrutiny can mitigate. 

Where, indeed...  I do know for a fact that a lone holdout will be ignored, ineffectual and marginalized by the media in any case. 

One chance to survive a SHTF/Katrina-type situation with your weapons and other possessions intact is do what the Koreans did in Los Angeles:  Combine resources and present a substantial armed front - preferably from high ground and effective cover.  The authorities never attempted to confront them because they had bigger problems with the rioters and no reason to approach a group that could resist even more effectively.  The mistake in New Orleans was everybody holed up in their own homes.  Neighborhoods should have established local command posts and established a perimeter defended by "local elements" where the authorities would be neither required nor desired.  Appoint a liaison (preferably their own duly-elected local city council rep) with some legal experience who can explain that the group is willing to coordinate with authorities for maintaining curfews and supply lines, as well as rendering aid and relief, but will not surrender any Constitutional Rights from within the secured area.

This is one reason why gun registration is so insidious.  It gives rogue government officials acting in violation of their oath a leg up on confiscation.  Now, it seems to me that if the numbers are correct and registrations in Hawaii have spiked up 20% since 2008 as reported, then there should be that many more votes in favor of repealing these laws.  The best way to make sure you never have to act in response to the "last straw" is to go back and alleviate the first straw.
