Firearms and Accessories / Re: 9mm 1911 mags?
« on: March 04, 2013, 04:35:09 PM »
Hey Ted, how are those metalform and Springfield mags? Do they work well in your 1911? 9 rounders or 10 rounders?

I hate to say it, but I like the 9 round Metalforms and Springfields better than my Wilson Combat 10-rounder (I know, blasphemy!  )
The magazines are fine. The only FTFs I've had were when I failed to insert a magazine properly, and I have the occasional (maybe once every firing session, so call it every 150 rounds or so) failure to lock the slide to the rear on the last round.
I've now numbered my magazines, so I'll be able to see if it is a mag problem or a pistol problem.

And I love, love , LOVE my RIA M1911!
The only way I could love it more was if I put a picture of myself on it......oh, wait, maybe TMI.....

Have you checked MidwayUSA? www.midwayusa.com

I've gotten Metalforms, Wilson Combat, Springfields and some others for my RIA 9mm 1911.  8)

General Discussion / Re: How's the line at HPD?
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:17:36 AM »
I was in line by 0445 this morning, Jan 2nd.
There were 5 guys in front of me.
Doors opened promptly at 0745 and I was done registering my shotgun by 0830.
I parked downstairs in the garage, which doesn't require money in the meters till 0730. At 0645 I went downstairs, fed the meter some quarters and that covered me till I was finished.

Line was about what folks have already reported.

Looney guy was strange: He started off asking everyone in line to go summon a cop for him. Folks in line told him: "The night watch is right inside; go get them yourself." Finally, an HPD officer came out, then looney guy complained to the officer that he was worried that the cops were trying to kill him!  :wtf:
And that he heard voices talking to him, and it was God.
Apparently God doesn't care about parking meters or tow-away zones because looney guy stuck around, as others have said.

For a data point, the few folks I chatted with agreed that C&C should at least consider allowing firearms registration in Kapolei (isn't that our second city?) if not at all the satellite city halls.

Anyone have a para usa gi?

Another useful site is the M1911 forum http://forums.1911forum.com/ as well as the M1911 sub-forum in the M4 Carbine site http://www.m4carbine.net/forumdisplay.php?f=176

I have a RIA M1911 in 9mm.
I went for the Tactical version over the GI because I prefer the improved beavertail and the ambi safety.

Bought it online for ~$450, shipping included. Spent the extra $$ on ammo & extra magazines and have been shooting the snot out of it every chance I get  8)
If we ever get CCW here in Hawaii, you can bet it will be on my hip!

The M1911 is a great weapon.
But if you're not careful, folks get very emotional and start dick-measuring ("My Kimber is better than your Wilson/Colt/Whatever") in a hurry.

My suggestions are free and worth about as much:

  • Identify your requirements first:
(Defending against the UN Takeover? Zombie Apocalypse? Western Societal Collapse? Or just want a good gun for HD and range days?)
  • Then ID your budget ($800 is a tidy sum for many of us).
  • Then do your research (posting here is a good start, but don't let us be your sole deciding factor).
  • Find a good gunsmith and start talking to him about what you want to do to whatever gun you eventually get.
  • Buy your gun, get some good magazines, buy some ammo and go shoot! Work at being the best shot you can be with your particular gun.

Good luck!
Post here with what you decide.

General Discussion / Best place for cheap 12 ga. ammo?
« on: January 01, 2013, 01:06:56 PM »
Aloha,
I'm just getting into shotguns (bought a beautiful 12 ga Mossberg 590A1 20"  :geekdanc: ) and am looking for advice on the best place for inexpensive ammo.

I'm only going to be blasting holes in paper to start with. (my 9mm M1911 w/Speer Gold Dot HPs is my HD gun).

So I'm looking for 12 Gauge; #7, #7 1/2 or #8 shot; in 2 3/4.

Any advice is appreciated, including guidance on what folks think the average "cost per round" should be as a rule of thumb.

I hate to hear things like this (GEN Petraeus infidelity) but it isn't really surprising.

When powerful military guys fall, it is almost always "zipper trouble".
They don't want money or stuff; but something about the "power" of a fresh conquest becomes irresistible.

I still respect him for everything he did for the Nation and hope he and his family can find a way through these tough times.

RIA Full Size Tactical in 9mm (bought from SARCO in Pennsylvania and shipped to John Orr, Oahu's best FFL ever!!  :shaka:).

VZ G10 Elite Tactical Carry grips in Black Cherry with magazine release thumb notch.

The stock magazine and these Metalforms (available from MidwayUSA, among others) work just fine with both FMJ (Federal Champion 115GR 9MM) and JHP (Speer 124 GR Gold Dot). Got all my 9mm ammo from OGC Tactical. Great prices! Thanks Carter!
No FTEs and the only FTFs were with my Wilson Combat ETM 10 rd magazine I hadn't inserted all the way.

I've had the gun a month now and have put ~ 1000 rounds through it. Most of that 1000 (95%) was 115 GR FMJ from Federal or Independence. Only 50 rounds were JHP due to higher cost per round.

I LOVE this gun!

I had similar thoughts as well - but the poll showed that Hawaii did not care. Are we that stupid?

Yes, we are....... :grrr:

+1
Yes, most of our voters are that stupid.  :wtf:

"Only HPD needs guns."
"Vote for Crazy Mazie because she has a "D" next to her name."

Need more examples? I'm sure others can chime in.......

Couldn't get the link to work (it may be blocked here at work  :( )

My 2 cents: I'm voting for Lingle.
While she may not have been the Second Amendment's best friend during her time as governor, I think that the more Republicans we can put in the US Senate, the closer we'll get to a Nationwide Concealed Carry Law and more sanity in any "gun control" discourse we have.

The alternate being Crazy Mazie HiroNO!, a useless, do nothing liberal. I think we have enough of those in Washington already!  :grrr:

Where did you get your fingerprints taken?

I planning on getting my Non-Res CCW Permit soon.

AZ sent me the cards and I had our security office take my prints.
Many military police stations on the bases around here might be able to print you.

Not much help, I know.
Sorry.  :(

If everyone's down to apply and will stick to it, I'll do it once every month or two just to get the numbers of rejected applications up...I know when Chris tried, not too many people actually went out to apply.

I'm more than willing to apply for a Hawaii CCW permit if someone tells me the process.

To date I haven't been able to find anything anywhere.

Or is it because the process is:
  • Go to Beretania Street
  • Stand in line for hours
  • Get to the window of the Firearms Unit and ask for a CCW permit application
  • Get blank and confused stares from the guys behind the window
  • Get laughed at by everyone behind me in line for wasting the last hour of my life standing in line for nothing
  • Make note of the names of the HPD officers and what they tell me regarding a HI CCW for future reference

Hpd could just change their stance, not issue any permits and not allow reciprocity.

Ummm, that's pretty much what they're doing now, so I'm not sure what the "change" to their stance would be.   ???

That is why I was saying it would be out of reach.

Not everyone can afford to go on a trip to get a CCW permit to be reciprocated.  Imagine having to travel to another state, pay air fair and hotel, and take a bunch of special classes to get a permit to exercise your right to free speech or hold a protest?  Same same IMO.

You don't have to do all that.

Arizona issues CCW applications to non-residents through the mail.

I agree that we don't need to hijack this thread any more than it has been, so I started a new thread about this topic at: http://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=4288.0

Legal and Activism / Non-resident CCW permit discussion
« on: September 12, 2012, 04:26:26 PM »
Very true so the only way Hawaii residents would be able to do it is travel to a state that issues CCW permits to non residents then come back.
 Back to topic.

<remainder snipped>

You may only have to travel as far as your mailbox. Read on below the next quote.

And, to answer the question, it won't help Hawaii.  It will only help hawaii when we can make the argument that tourists can carry, but hawaiians can not.  In order to carry in your home state, you must have a permit from the home state (to do so otherwise would implicate the 10th amendment).  To explain slightly further, I can compel you accept out of state transfers like a driver license, mainly because it's under "interstate commerce," but, I can not tell you how to give your own people a license.

So how would we change this?

I recently applied for a NON-RESIDENT CCW from the great state of Arizona. 1 form, 2 fingerprint cards, my NRA Handgun Safety cert (a copy) and $60 dollars later my packet is on it's way back to AZ.

AZ will issue a permit to carry concealed to non-residents that meet all the other eligibility requirements (found here: http://www.azdps.gov/Services/Concealed_Weapons/Permits/Obtain/#4). This permit is valid in 30 other states. Not surprisingly, HI and the Northeastern states are absent.

Now, I don't plan on CCW'ing on an AZ permit here in HI and making myself the test case or poster boy for reciprocity.
I am happy to support HDF as they fight this fight, but it got me to wondering what would happen if as many HI firearms owners as possible applied for and obtained non-resident CCW permits. Imagine telling the legislators and the public that Arizona trusts Hawaii citizens more than Hawaii does. That we as law-abiding citizens of Hawaii can legally carry concealed in 30+ States except for our own! There might possibly be legal advantage to this precedent, but I wouldn't know and could very well be wrong.

But I will proudly carry my Hawaii DL, my AZ CCW and my 1911 when I go to visit friends and family in Texas, Virginia and Georgia over the holidays.  :geekdanc:

How do you get the AZ CCW packet?
Go to https://www.azdps.gov/About/Contacts/Email/?c=CCW input your info, tell them some version of "Hello, Please send me information and the packet required to apply for an Arizona non-resident concealed weapons permit. My address is: XXXXXX North Kaxxxxxxxxx Avenue, Yourtown, HI  967xx. Thank you."

And wait for the mailman.

I plan on applying for a Florida non-resident CCW next.

Is there a Hawaii angle I missed?

OGC Tactical / Re: Next OGC Tactical Handgun Course on August 26, 2012

I took this class last Sunday.
Excellent instructors and a high quality NRA video for the classroom portion.  8)
The range time was even better, with plenty of opportunities to learn safe handling of a wide variety of handguns.
And you get to fire them all, pretty much to your hearts' content!  :geekdanc:

Definitely would recommend to anyone needing their NRA safety certificate.

Question: when will the certificates be ready for pick up?
