General Discussion / Re: Searching for that M1 Garand "PING" in Hawaii
« on: February 17, 2026, 09:10:24 AM »
Aloha!

I’ll be visiting Oahu from South Korea this summer (mid June-mid August) as a business trip and I’m looking for any leads on where I might be able to shoot an M1 Garand.

As a history buff and firearms enthusiast, hearing that iconic "Ping" in person has always been on my bucket list. I’m aware that many tourist ranges only offer modern platforms, so I’m reaching out to this community for advice.

DM me

Whether it's a rental range that carries one, or a local shooter who wouldn't mind an enthusiast tagging along to the range, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

I am a film and GoPro hobbyist, so I’d be more than happy to provide some high-quality footage or photos of your gear in action as a thank you. I’m happy to cover my own range fees and ammo costs, of course.

Mahalo for any help or advice you can provide!

General Discussion / Re: Tacoma or Frontier?
« on: February 10, 2024, 09:26:21 AM »
I own a 2011 Tacoma V6 with 125000 miles. No major issues with the engine since it’s a timing chain. The most reliable V6 is the 1GRFE which has been around for 20 years. In the last years of the 3rd gen Tacoma they were up graded to a 3.5 V6. These smaller V6 are doing good so far, but new are being replaced with the 4 turbo. Besides the normal expenses of upkeep (oil/filters/belts/tires), most expensive repair was the ac evap. Only cons I are paint fades and the cab is on the smaller side.

Right now looking at the 5 watt radios, still doing research on what would be the best to start out with.  Looking at the Btech radios and the Tidradio TD H5 GRMS,  The Tidradio comes in a set with two radios, four batteries, chargers, and two hand mikes all for 79 bucks.  I live in Honolulu so I'm not sure i would be able to hit any repeaters in my case.  According to myGMRS I should be in range of the Aiea repeaters, but I know that GMRS works best in line of sight.

I’ve got a GMRS license; I dialed up a couple of repeaters once and never went back to them. Obnoxious drunk guy being obnoxious, insulting people, lots of folks arguing, generally not useful or informative in any way. Reminded me of Facebook a little…

Aloha

How difficult was it to connect to the repeaters ? What type of radio or set up were you using ?

Would it be an option for off grid comms? Possible natural disasters/fires/civil unrest.  I know off road guys use it.

Aloha.

Any GMRS people here? Just got my license  several weeks ago.  Looking at starting off with a hand held unit, then moving to one in my truck.  How are the repeaters here on Oahu? I logged onto the mygmrs.com and it shows you the online repeaters.  Mahalos in advance.

It was good to see the some of the old RSO.  Gates were open early and hand to stand in line prior to checking in.  New time restriction is crazy i felt like I had to rush and by the time i got into my grove it was time to pack up.  Limited 50 yards targets it seems that the grass was not cut so it was overgrown.  Parks and rec had 9 months to fix and improve things, and they were not able to cut the grass at the 50 yard line.  No steel targets anymore.  Limiting shooting time is like telling someone they have an hour to swim at a beach.  Besides that it  was good to be back on the range.  Hopefully they ease up on the time limits.

Just picked up a Rock Island 1911A2 Tac Ultra in 9mm.  Have not shoot it yet, its basically the poor mans 2011.  The only thing is it's a pain in the butt to find a holster for it.  Keep you guys updated.

If you bought it from a FFL you can do it online. For private sales you have to go into town. Law changed this this summer if not wrong.
