General Discussion / Re: Make your own gun?
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:03:01 PM »
I pretty much though it had to be registered with HI but the OP was talking Federal and you did not say which you were talking about.  I even included that in my second post on here.

Yes 922r applies to the number of IMPORTED parts used with a gun that is built after 1989.

By Federal law all you have to do to legally build a title 1 firearm is not be a prohibited person.  That simple, no paperwork.  No serial number but the ATF does suggest that you mark it in some way that you can identify it.

I am not well versed in the HI laws yet but I get the impression the way the registration works in HI that even if you built your own you would still be required register it with the state.

Keep in mind that when the word build is used here that dose not mean assemble an AR.  Build means you actually build the receiver.  This most commonly done with AK's since they are a sheet metal receiver.  You buy a "flat" and then have to bend and rivet it for it to become a receiver ie a firearm.

Many people also build their own Short Barrel Rifles and Short Barrel Shotgun by modifying guns they already have.  The process is only different in the fact you have to submit a Form 1 and pay the tax.  Once the Form comes back approved (about 6-8 months right now) you can build it.

You gotta register the receiver and make sure barrel length and USA parts count on foreign types are up to requirements and you should be good

Sorry that is just not true.  Can  you provide proof otherwise?

You can build any title 1 firearms legally, that is legal in your state, with no paperwork or "USA parts" count.  If YOU are building the gun then it is a US made gun.......

You can also build any title 2 firearm legally other then machineguns,  but with these you do have to serial number AND you have to have the approved paperwork back first.  Of course they still have to be legal in your state.

Oh yeah, can't build SBRs or assault pistols here

Strategies and Tactics / Re: IWB vs OWB?
« on: May 26, 2013, 08:07:02 PM »
OWB will ALWAYS be easier and quicker to draw from, but not always the best option for cary.

As you said you can not carry there so that leaves that out.

Any time that is jacket weather I OWB carry.  Even half the time in the summer time.  We have legal open carry here but depending on where I am headed and what i am dong I will often carry concealed (with license of course).  My favorite holster is actually an Uncle Mikes paddle OWB holster because they cheep, effective and seem to carry just right on my body.  I also have a Raven holster that I OWB carry with generally in the winter when we have a lot less daylight then dark as it carries with my light mounted on it.

Ruger 10/22 hands down.

Reliable, cheep to shoot, accurate, you can carry lots of ammo if you needed to, quieter then other guns, easy to train others with.

While it may not be "humane" to take game with one it will work on anything up to and including medium game.

General Discussion / Re: Owning a Rifle Suppresor in Hawaii?

I have several and they are quite fun.  I actually dislike shooting the guns that dont have them.

Depending on the gun and the ammo used they can be extremely quiet.  My 77/22 shooting subsonic ammo is actually quieter then dry firing it.  The firing pin hitting brass is quieter then the pin hitting the face.

Just an FYI on the link about the states that allow silencers.  WA has always allowed them but there was some poor wording that made it a grey area if they were legal to actually use.  I know this for a fact since I have owned them in WA since 2005.

Wow that sucks.  I bought one in January and has run just fine for me.  All I have shot out of it is Federal Bulk pack.  I have 5 mags for mine and all run fine.  I probably only put about 500rds though mine.

I do have a Gemtech Outback 2 mounted on it so that creates extra back pressure.  One of my old P-22's was real finicky but with the silencer on I have never had a problem.

It sounds like there are a ton of "teachers" working there (HI) that only have provisional licenses so in reality they are not even teachers.  My GF has a masters in teaching and is even "highly qualified" in a couple areas through federal testing.  Again according to the teacher she spoke with there (17 years and a local) said she may not get the school of her choice, but getting an area she wants should not be a problem.

Yes I fully agree I will have a harder time.  Right now I am working on that.  I am trying to get my training records from a school that only exists on paper these days.  I have the ones showing all my didactic hours with all the subject along with a completion letter.  What I dont have is anything showing the actual hours for clinical and internship.  I know my school actually had higher standards then that required, I just need to prove it.

Again for AMR I dont think I would have much problem getting a job.  I understand it is much harder for a fire job, just like any other area.

Very good point.

That is some of the kind of stuff we are trying to find out about.

Again thanks for all the comments.

It is totally understandable that people do not want to waste their time on people from out of state.

GF was able to talk to a local teacher and found out that she is way more qualified then many of the teachers there.  Sounds like she would have no problem getting a job.

For me it sounds like if I meet all the requirements (which I think I do) then I should easily be able to get a job with AMR.  Once I find out about my certification then I think we might plan a trip down there as soon as school gets out here in June.  Will stop by the stations and shake some hands.

All good points and I do want to hear the real things about life there not just the nice.

I am somewhat worried about getting bored there.  How do others keep from getting bored?

WA is very decent overall but we are still a "blue" state.  But you can have some NFA, Good carry laws, state preemption so no matter where you go in the state all the laws are the same.

Well the weather and diving are what is driving my thoughts.

I have lived in NE WA (the dry side with pine trees) 99% of my life and I do like it here.  The winter does not bother me but when the temps start getting over the mid 80's it sucks.  I am spent and worthless.  We end up with roughly 3 months of 95+ temps and a couple of weeks well into the 100's.  I work in Yakima (middle of the state) which is desert and for several months during the summer it never drops below 80 and can easily reach into the 110-120.

I do lots of traveling for fun and work.  I have been to all over WA and OR as that is my main region for wildland fires.  I have been to ID, MT, CA, CO, SC, FL, AK, AZ, UT, NV and HI (Maui/BI) so I have seen some great places.  I am 37 and HI is the only place I have ever seriously considered moving.  I often find myself thinking of being in HI.  Yes I understand things are more expensive there but I will also spend a lot less on other stuff due to my current lifestyle.

I have been google searching every combination of words that I can think of.  We will NOT be moving without jobs lined up, that is not even an option.

I read everything from there is a great shortage of medics and if you are qualified there is no problem getting a job to the opposite of if you are not local and didn't get your training here good luck getting a job.  Then of course there is the "things are different here" and "mainlanders are not liked in these positions".  Of course I have read everything in between.

Of course there is the issue of transferring our "licenses" over for our professions and we are just starting the process on that as well.

She has been reading up on her stuff.  I have been doing the best I can with mine.  The fire department does not even have a website that I can find other then a one page "contact" info on the Hawaii County website.  There nothing I can find that talks about the job, the shifts, rotation, how the system works there, ect basic stuff you would find on most department websites.

I know the other gun boards I am on have people from all walks of life and since I had gun questions I thought I would just ask this one also.

I know this is a firearms board and I have started another thread on guns and introduced myself.

I am considering a move to the BI and have a few job questions if anyone can help.  I am looking for information on paramedic jobs either private or fire based on the island.  I have been in the fire/EMS field since 1997.  The other thing I am looking for is information on teaching jobs for my GF.

I have been doing some research and most is conflicting.  I am hoping to be able to talk to someone that has some current and first hand information.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Considering a move
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:30:27 PM »
I am considering a move to the BI from Washington State.  I have been an avid collector and shooter for as long as I can remember.  The last few years I have slowed down a lot having other things in life going on and other things to spend money on.  I have been trying to read up on your laws but still have questions.

I will be selling a major portion of my collection IF I do move.  This is both to fund the move and due to the HI laws.  I decent portion of the collection is not legal there including NFA items.

I am trying to decide what stuff I would bring with me but that would all be based on what kind of shooting can be done in HI.  Right now I shoot out my back door on my 300 yard range but I realize that is not going to be an option there.  Is there much shooting outside of "approved" ranges?  Can a person just go "out in the woods" and shoot/plink on their own?  Whenever we are out riding our ATV's or in the woods we have guns on us, is that even an option there?

On that same topic is there a practical way to ship my ammo over for the guns I do keep?  The thing I keep getting confused on is that it gets shipped as hazmat but ammo is shipped as ORD-M.  I have more then a little bit of ammo and with current pricing and availability selling here and buying there seems like a risk.

I am sure I will have more questions as this thread gets going.

These are cool.  I see lots of them during the fall months on Forest Fires, http://www.jetboil.com/  I have one but basically just use it to boil hot water.  Most I see use it for coffee.
