We were asked during physicals for our young boys. We were prepared for it and just said no, and moved on.

There is a good reason for the question. The healthcare provider is often dealing with reasonable people like us, but also the lowest common denominators at times. Some people they see may have guns in the house, and simply have never thought about a youngster gaining access to it. Just like when they ask the question about how much TV your kid watches. Some people have no idea that it's bad to let the TV babysit all day while you smoke, Facebook, and eat bon bons. 

Of course, now that the gov't is all over healthcare, I'm sure there's a way for them to get a hold of the electronic records to see which way you answered.   

All those committee members were informed by testimony at the committee hearing, if not before, of that defect in the bill, yet they chose NOT to amend the bill to allow for that obviously necessary use to conform to the standards of ethical humane hunting practices. Why?

I've only lived here for 3 months, and have asked "why" not a few times in trying to understand how the HI laws work. I would think that they either don't think it'll grow any legs, or they are just putting forth just enough effort to keep some of their constituents happy so they can point to pro-2A activity next election cycle. 

When I emailed the sponsors about the omission of target shooting, I made sure to include the following brief, but critical information:


-Suppressors change the point of impact from a non-suppressed firearm.
-Not being able to verify this shift before hunting could lead to an unsafe/inhumane situation.
-The change in impact could cause an unintentional miss.
-The hunter may not be able to insure a humane kill.
-Going to field with a rifle that you haven't verified the change in point of impact from an installed suppressor would be similar to putting a new sights or scope on your firearm and going hunting without ever having sighted it in.  The change isn't drastic in every instance, but it is always unethical for a hunter to go afield with an unverified zero.


I posted the emails of all the sponsors earlier in the thread. I only got one canned response, so I'm going to hit it again.  Feel free to use any/all of this info.

Moved here a couple months ago, and only had room to ship a few things. I left the rest on the mainland in the care of a trusted individual.

-When I registered my current HI guns when I arrived, they required a bill of lading from the carrier, or a plane ticket stub and firearms baggage check tag in order to prove how the guns arrived. 

-According to the ATF, an unlicensed (non-FFL) individual can legally ship firearms across state lines from themselves--to themselves.

6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?
Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm.

-At some point in the future, I plan on returning to my cache and retrieving the rest of my stuff.  Do I have to have it sent to an FFL here, or can I just ship to myself and register within the 5 days?  Anyone ever do this?

The ball is rolling and my family will likely be moving to Kauai from the Denver area in the next few months. We need a reset in our lives, so we're selling all our stuff and looking for a much simpler life. The Aloha Spirit has been calling to us for some time, and the pieces are finally falling into place.

I'm a former soldier and LEO. My last job was the Armory Supervisor at Magpul. I recently resigned to be a stay-at-home dad to my two boys, 2&4; a much tougher job. I will definitely be bringing a few firearms with me, and my tools so I can wrench on guns. I've been shooting and building AR's since the 80's and have factory armorer's certifications on multiple platforms. I may look at transferring my FFL there as well. I see there are virtually no shooting ranges there, but JGB Arms in Lihue advertises for live-fire training, so they must shoot somewhere. Also been looking at the hunting situation on the island, and it appears as though there's lots of protein scurrying about.

Looking forward to the move, and becoming active in the 2A community as soon as we get settled. I'm an NRA Lifer, and have been active in 2A orgs in a few states that we've lived in.
