How to use a map and compass
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:05:02 AM »
I picked this up from the Hawaii Hunters Education Manual.

  1. Learn to add and subtract declination from your compass reading.
    1. West declination is added.
    2. East declination is subtracted.
    3. Know the proper degrees for each area.
  2. Mark the spot where you are. Mark the spot where you are going. Do this before you leave camp or your vehicle.
  3. Place your compass on the map. The baseplate edge joins the two spots.
  4. Point the "N" to the magnetic north on the map.
  5. Hold the compass level in front of you.
  6. Turn your body until the north-pointing end of the needle is directly over the needle pointing to the "N."
  7. The direction of travel arrow now points to your destination.
  8. Repeat these steps until you find your spot.
  9. To find your way back, point the direction of travel arrow toward your starting point. Then backtrack.
