Permit not ready??
« on: September 26, 2013, 12:48:48 PM »
I am on my second day pass due for my permit and it is still not "ready" is this normal. If I remember correctly they told me I only have between the 26th and the 30th to pick it up but its not even ready yet. How many days after the 14 day waiting period do we have to pick up a rifle permit? Does having it not "ready" yet apply to those days?

Thanks.

Long-gun (rifles/shotguns) permits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue. Be advised that a handgun (pistols/revolvers) permit is valid for only ten (10) days from the date of issue.

You shouldn't have to worry about not picking it up immediately, but you might start worrying why they are giving your application "special attention."  I've never heard of an application not being ready after the 14-day wait is up.

It is my understanding that if you don't pick up your permit within that window, the application is thrown out and you have to start over.  However, not sure if the window slides because it is not ready for pick up.

I've never heard of anyone's permit not be ready after the passing of the two week wait period.  I originally thought that they were supposed to call you if they found something in your background check.  However, one time I was at HPD registering a gun, a guy was in the lobby waiting to pick up his permit and the officer never called him back to the window.  Just before my permit came up, the guy asked the officer at the window to check and the officer found that the guy has a FELONY conviction!

The guy then asks the officer about how to go about getting the felony conviction removed and with a straight face, the office tells him the directions on who to contact and such.  The guy goes "ok, thanks.  I'll be right back".  He walks out and the rest of us in the firearms lobby and the officer all look at each other and laugh.

So do they say anything in the negative if that is the case? Or wait and hope he goes away type thing?

I've seen them hold up for dui, need to get the waiver if that's the case.

Seen a guy get his guns taken by desk sergeant for open DV charges from out of state

You need to check your dates because it is a 6 day window to pick up. On what day did you apply?

That applies to PISTOL PERMIT TO ACQUIRE.  He's applying for a rifle permit, which doesn't expire for a year.

Hylandgreen is right.

From HPD website you posted above:

"There is a 14 day waiting period on all permits. After the 14-day waiting period the permit will be valid for only 6 calendar days. Permits not picked up by the 6th day will be voided. Applicants will need to reapply and go through another 14-day waiting period, so please plan accordingly."

This applies to both rifle and pistol permits.
Although the longun permit is valid for a year after picked up, you only have 6 calendar days to pick it up after the 14 day waiting period or you start all over.

That's why they post pick up dates on the window when you apply.

Also from HPD :

"As an option, applicants may have their processed permits mailed to them. Applicants need to provide a self-addressed, certified restricted-delivery, pre-paid envelope (available at the U.S. Post Office) when coming for their initial application for permit. Long-gun (rifles/shotguns) permits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue. Be advised that a handgun (pistols/revolvers) permit is valid for only ten (10) days from the date of issue.

I know it is kind of off topic, but Maui has a 14 day pick up permit period.

•Once permit is approved, you must pick it up in person at the Maui Police Department Records Section.
Permits are not mailed, faxed or released to anyone other than the applicant. Permits not picked up by the
14th day after clearance, will be voided. Applicants will need to reapply and another mandatory 14-day
waiting period will be applied, so please plan accordingly

I checked Big Island, the website does not really mention anything.  I guess it is the same as HPD.

As for Kauai, I could not find anything on Kauai.  Google could not find anything and the KPD website just plain sucks donkey balls.

I just thought it was strange Maui offers more days to pick up your permit.

Donkey balls :D. OK I should have mentioned I live on Kauai. Apparently they do it a little different, albeit a little slower I guess. I did pick it up today. I inquired about the permit for a pistol and you have the 14 day waiting period then a 10 day window to receive and then register said pistol with the KPD. If you do not meet the 10 day registration period you must reapply, wait 14 days and then again attempt to receive and register within 10 days. And so on and so until you time it just right. Talk about hoops to jump through.

So why so different from island to island?

Kauai has been causing some problems lately...a specific officer in charge seems to be making up his own rules. Please document as much information as possible about the situation, and ask specifically why the permit is delayed. Send me an IM and I'll try to get some answers for you or get you someone to talk to on Kauai.
