I've made a few batches.  Mead takes a fair bit of aging, but it's really worth the wait! 

Seems like I heard there was a meadery operating on one of the neighbor islands, too.

A new recipe each time, as befits early experimentation! 

Fermentation was slow, particularly in one that I pushed to be both sweet and high-alcohol.  Like 3 months slow.  I think we probably racked after 4 weeks, but that was as much newbie anxiety as anything. 

We did do one called "Joe's Anciant Orange" that sounds similar to what you're describing.  I don't recall that one taking terribly long, and no racking was involved.

I didn't take hydrometer readings since the JAO recipe was a small batch.  Anecdotally, one bottle did produce a warm glow!
