The Social Security Administration, Department of Education and now the Post Office are now looking to buy guns and ammunition?

Well apparently the post office has it's own police force as well. Is there any federal agency that doesn't have it's own police force?

I personally find it troubling that so many agencies have their own enforcement arms. Next thing you know CPS will have their own armed enforcement arm.

They have a fairly sizeable law enforcement branch with thier own swat.  If I recall correct they have conducted some very publicised search and seizures related to explosives and chemicals being mailed

You would probably be surprised how many agencies have law enforcement powers.  I'd say it's well over like 50 forces lol.  You can go through the US Code and see which guys qualify under LEOSA and stuff.  You have Health, Interior, Parks, Postal, Treasury, HLS.. etc. etc.  There are tons and tons of agencies.

The post office is a private corporation yet under law they are allowed to carry a weapon.

What?!

Looks like I'm applying with the Post Office!

Mailman with an AK...sounds like a dream job for me  :geekdanc:

Rank and file do NOT have authority nor privilege to be armed.  Only the Postal Police can be armed inside a Post Office legally.  Not even a uniformed police office on duty can LEGALLY be armed inside a Post Office.  There was a lawsuit filed in Colorado a few years ago challenging this.  I have lost track of this case and do not know what the final ruling was.  However, a recent news story on a separate case by a Federal Court ruled that people CAN be armed on the property....just not INSIDE the buildings, with the solitary exception of the Postal Police.  Not even a Federal Marshal can legally be armed inside a Post Office.  It's a Federal Offense with Federal penalties.

Hey you don't make the rules!

I do what I want, and no mail for you!
Or as Carter would say...or you get nothing. Love that saying.

Post office lost if I recall that you cannot have the gun on the parking / lot grounds; upheld that you cannot bring it inside.

Taken out of context:

Rand Paul's Pro-gun Amendment to Repeal Gun Bans in Post Offices Initially Fails
-- But a relentless Paul achieves minor improvements

In a surprise ambush, Democrats on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee unanimously voted to defeat a Rand Paul amendment to allow guns in post offices.
But Senator Paul was relentless in trying to get his language adopted. And as a result, a minor (anemic) improvement was later added as a sop to his persistence.
To his credit, Senator Paul didn’t want to settle for a mere study and kept pushing to get his amendment passed. This later resulted in anemic language that allows some concealed carry -- but only in postal parking lots and only for some gun owners.
That language passed unanimously and is now included in S. 1486.

Sorry had to chime in. This is first hand experience (mail carrier). I wish we could carry but no :( as far as having armed authority yes. Postal inspectors deal with all crimes having to do with mail. ie mailing drugs, contraband , theft of mail. The amount of inspectors in each state is very small. They work in conjunction with all state and local authority. Most time taking a back up role to local authority's. as far as being a private company. No we are a federal company but the only one that not funded for buy your taxes. Stamps pay my salary. Finally I have never heard of a time a state or federal officer was asked to remove their fire arm inside of a post office. At least hear in Hawaii.

Tolerance level of the Post Master at each location I guess.  There were 2 in Colorado when I lived there that stated emphatically, NOBODY armed on premises.  There have been posts on some of the other gun forums that echo similar experiences from LEO's in different localities across the country.  I plan my errands and end up NOT carrying for trips to the Post Office.  Though I feel uncomfortable not carrying concealed, I cannot risk my security clearance nor employment on Federal charges regardless of how stupid some of the rules may be.  State issued CHL has NO merit on Federal property....commuting to and from work "naked" stinks too.  There are more and more incidents of active shooting incidents on Federal property and the "duck and cower" position that is advocated just does NOT sit well with me.
