How to join the CMP and prove the safe handling of firearms??? (Read 4286 times)

I am looking at joining the CMP, and I understand that I do have to be a member of an affiliated organization. That is not a problem. I do have a few questions about how I go about proving my eligibility so I can order a rifle. I know that my hunter's license from the state is invalid, since there was no live fire training, but would paperwork from a NRA handgun safety course satisfy their requirements?

Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status. - Concealed Carry License.
Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training. - FFL or C&R license.
Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site

Also, will I need to forward a copy of my long gun permit to the CMP??

Mahalo for your input  :shaka:

Interesting.  I'll have to ask my dad what he went through to get his 1903 and M1 Garand through CMP.  To my knowledge, he's "just" a lifetime member of NRA and the HRA.  I don't believe he had completed any NRA or other classes or training.

A copy of your long gun permit is not stated, but I send mine to ensure that I don't get rejected.

Current or past military or law enforcement service is one way to meet the eligibility requirements.

Don't forget the notorization block on the form.

Check the link for the all the info.

Unfortunately, I do not meet the past military or LE for requirement.

This link goes to the CMP Club Finder

HRA and HDF are the easiest organizations to join.

The Puuloa Rifle and Pistol Club and the Chinese Gun Club actually want shooters that compete.

The Puuloa Rifle and Pistol club holds an annual M1 Garand and Vintage Rifle Match in November. The course of fire is all at the 200 yardline.

Send them a copy of the NRA handgun course you took here, make sure it states on it what you did such as live fire training, safety and class instruction. Also send them a copy of your permit because our laws require it for all rifle purchases. Send those, plus proof of membership with a cmp affiliated club, other info and the order form and you're good to go. Also you need one of the forms notarized, which can be done at your bank. Send it off and they'll email you eventually if they need anything else, or update you about the order and access to the cmp online store where you can track your order
