Primers
« on: September 10, 2014, 05:15:16 PM »
OK, so just today I accepted delivery of the final { hopefully} pieces of equipment I need to start reloading.

Before I go out and purchase any, I'd like to get some opinions on the best brand of primers to buy or if there's any difference.

I'm going to need,

Small rifle

Large rifle

Large pistol

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance guys.

Depends on your equipment and what you want to accomplish.  If you are making plinking ammo, anything cheap will do.  High accuracy rifle shooting you need to test primers and powder components to see what works best together.  Lee says not to use federal primers on their equipment because they are on the soft side and might discharge when you seat them.

For my accuracy rifle loads I usually use CCI or Wolf
For my Garand I use CCI no 34 military primers to guard against slamfires. (it is a good idea to use these hard cup primers for semi-autos with a floating firing pin)
Pistol loads I use whatever is cheapest and available...  :)

Thanks Heavies, I'll be starting with 300 blk { AR } then getting into .45Acp and finally 30.06 { Browning BLR }

Rockchucker  and Lee dies.

Majority of mine are CCI. I also used Federal with no problem. Those are pretty much of what's available here. I use a Rockchucker press, RCBS hand priming tool, RCBS and Lee dies.

CCi #41 for the AR should be good, for my .45acp I use PMC large pistol or Sellior & Bellot (cheap per 1K) and 30-06 I use the PMC large rifle or CCI #34's.  The CCI military primers are more expensive, but I'd feel safer with those in a floating firing pin gun.

I got them from WGS maybe 6 months ago, I forget when exactly.  I forget the price, but it was outstanding enough for me to buy a couple thousand.... I just cracked open the large pistol and loaded some .45, I hope they are good.   ;D

Tough to go wrong with Federal primers.
Just make sure you get the right flavor.
Eg. Standard, magnum, match...

30.06 { Browning BLR }

When I first read that, I saw "Browning BAR" and about made a mess.

I would start with the 3006. I think you just need to neck size the cases as long as you only reload shells fired from that blr.

I use Federal and CCI primers almost exclusively. Mostly because these are what I have found at reasonable prices over the years. I have used CCI small pistol primers for over 30 years. And I have used Federal small rifle primers (both regular and match) reloading .223/5.56 and 300BLK. In the last few years I have started using small magnum pistol primers, large pistol primers and large rifle primers. All CCI because I found them on sale. I have had good luck with every primer because every primer has performed the way it should when I pulled the trigger.

I have also used Remington small rifle primers occasionally over the last few years. No problems seen with them as well.

A friend of mine purchased a case (1000) magtech primers a couple of years ago at the gun show. He had a problem with a small number of them not going bang when he pulled the trigger. I would estimate about 25 primers out of that 1000 did not work.

I have to admit that I've never been accused of having a shortage of guts. Brains? Well the jury is still out on that one.....

I'm going for the 300 blk first because it's the caliber I'll be using most and it's expensive. I've been researching and have found an abundance of load data for various bullets and powders including what I'll be using. I already have over 800 cleaned and prepped cases { yes, I'll be re-checking them with a mic }. The 300 blk has been around for awhile now and since this forum has some of the foremost experts on reloading in the islands { including you } I'm confident that as long as I follow established practices I'll be able to develop safe, accurate loads.
