Aloha, I'm flying in from Maui to attend the show and got some questions. How will purchasing a firearm work being from off Island ? If it's a dealer, I understand he can ship it to my FFL. What if it's a private party ? Any other info would help me prep.

If you buy from a dealer he will fax your purchase to Maui pd.  if you buy it from a private party just take it back and register it.  Best to get the guys copy of the permit.

1get the firearm info , Serial number etc.
2seller will fax info to MPD
3apply for your pistol permit at MPD
4after 2 weeks fax or mail your permit to seller
5seller can mail the pistol directly via private courier to you or local pickup.
6go back to MPD to register the pistol

USPS can only be used for handguns between 2 FFLs

At the last Gun Show, I sold a .22 rifle to a friend from Maui.  He had his permit and I wrote him a proper receipt.  He took the rifle back to Maui and registered it right away.  Two weeks later I got a letter from Maui PD informing me that if I didn't immediately fax them a letter confirming the sale that I would be in violation of the law and subject to arrest (seriously!)

I faxed the letter and never heard anything from them again.  My friend confirmed that he had shown PD the bill of sale (with my name, address, etc--otherwise how would they have known to whom  to send their nasty letter) and they had registered it to him with no problems.

I guess that it was pretty slow that week at MPD and some paper-pusher had nothing better to do than to harass citizens.

By the way, two gun shows ago I sold a 12 ga. to a Maui resident who subsequently registered it and I never heard from MPD at all.

So, the moral of this story is if you are selling a gun to a neighbor islander, be sure to send a letter to that PD informing them of the transfer.  If my pal buys another firearm from me I'll be sure to write the letter then and there and give it to him to hand deliver to those paper pushers.

I think they were confused and thought you were a dealer. I sold stuff to my friend and all I wrote was a bill of sale.
